They settled in Cross, near Axbridge, Somerset and on the christening of his children, on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and on his death certificate, in Weston-super-Mare in 1859, he is referred to as a Journeyman Blacksmith. Cross was a staging post on the Stage coach run between Bristol and Exeter and it is likely that he was involved in the day-to-day upkeep and repairs to the coach trade.
