THE pavements of Brighton in former days were entirely composed of bricks, gener-ally laid flat on their side, but sometimes placed upright. In time some of them became very uneven and loose, and surrounded by a pool of water. The effect of stepping on these loose bricks was very disastrous, especially for ladies, for the dirty water was squirted up all over their boots and dresses, and on to the gentle-men's legs inside their trousers.
