Many researchers have confused the John Blanton of Greenbrier and Monroe Counties in West Virginia and the John Blanton who died in Red River County, Texas. We have documentation which we believe proves that these were two different men. According to deed and marriage records, the John Blanton who married Elizabeth Wiseman was in West Virginia from 1797 until 1823. He was probably in the area before then, but was not old enough to own land. At the same time, the John Blanton who went to Texas is found in Alabama and Arkansas. He was probably in Tennessee as early as 1800 since two of his sons claim to have been born there between 1800 - 1810.
