BRISCOE- Died in Martinsburg, Audrain, Co., Missouri, February 3, 1879, after a long and painful illness, Minnie A. Briscoe, in the 26th year of her age.

The subject of this brief memoir was born in Callaway County, Missouri, September 11, 1853; was married to her husband BARTON K. BRISCOE, in the church at Martinsburg, Missouri, June 2, 1874; moved to California in May, 1875; was converted, and joined the Southern  Methodist church in fall of same year and remained such to the closing hours of her life.

That invidious and fearful disease-consumption-had made deep inroads upon the beautiful form of the young wife and daughter, before she came back to the home of her girlhood, in Missouri, where the affection and love of a kind father and mother, and dear ones might administer to her wants in the dying hour.

All was done that affection and human skill could accomplish to restore to health the afflicted daughter, and to alleviate her sufferings in her closing hours, but all to no avail.

“The silver cord was loosed. "The marble chalice was broken,” and “the fragile flower was
withered;" and the spirit of the dear loved one went up to God that gave it.

A large concourse of people assembled in the church at Martinsburg, where the funeral obsequies were observed, and a discourse suitable to the occasion was preached, after which the remains were borne to the old family burying-ground.

May God bless and comfort the sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters and loved ones, and may they all meet in heaven. HENRY KAY.

Montgomery City, Missouri, February 27, 1879

House of Representatives - Civil War Claim

Jane H. Briscoe filed a private claim for "compensation of property damages done by the Army" to the 40th Congress 2nd Session, 1868, page 114. The claim was presented to the House of Representatives Private Claim Committee by Senator John A. Logan of Illinois. The Briscoe Farm, located about three miles north of Marthasville, was the site of a Civil War skirmish 20 March 1862. Thirty men of Co. F, Third Missouri Calvary, headed by Captain James W. McFadden, a regiment engaged in pursing bushwhackers and guerrillas during most of its term of service, went to the Briscoe farm to arrest Francis Gardere Henderson who was soliciting and drilling recruits for the Southern army. He was outspoken in his defense of the South and had previously escaped from the Union militia. The militia surrounded the farmhouse and demanded surrender. Shots answered the demand from the house. The militia returned the fire and the fighting quickly ended when the militia captured the entire party. Henderson was badly wounded and died a few days later. The last engagement of Co. F. Third Missouri Calvary was at Cherokee Bay, Randolph County, Arkansas 1 May 1865.

The Warren County Sesquicentennial, published September 1987, "Civil War," written by Mildred Simon, page 33, column 2, paragraph 2. "A man whose name is not known was shot and left by the roadside near Marthasville. He was a Union man and freely spoke his views while in town. It is supposed that he was shot by one of the Briscoes who were strongly in favor of the southern cause." No date/year is given for this event.
