Albert Kucher was a member one of two crews that, together, flew the
first jet flight over the North Pole in two F-100-F jets. This
historic flight took place on August 8, . They covered the 5405
miles from Wethersfield, England to Fairbanks, Alaska in 9 hours and
37 minutes. The four crew members included Captain Albert Kucher,
Brig. General Charles Blair, of Stamford, Conn., Capt. Robert Titus,
of Norfolk, Va., and Lt. George Woody of Horn Lake, Miss. Blair and
Titus piloted the planes, Kucher and Woody "crewed" them.

Alber Kucher held the Distinguised Flying Cross and the Air Medal
with two Oak Leaf Clusters. He graduated from flying school in 1944
and served with the Army Corps in WWII. In the Korean War he flew an
RF-51 Mustang on 90 combat missions. His last assignment was as an
instructor-pilot assigned to the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing. He was
killed on June 3, 1961 while flying from Itazuke Air Force Base to
Yokota Air Force Base in Japan, when he was unable to eject from his
faulty TF-100 Super Sabrejet. Brig. General Theodore R. Milton,
commander of the 41st Air Division, who was with him, was able to
parachute to safety.

He was a former commander of the Air National Guard units at
International Airport in Philadelphia, Pa., and McGuire Air Firce
Base, N.J. He was a member of the Columbia Turn-Verein Post of the
American Legion, Private John MacArthur Post of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, and the Corinthian Avenue Presbyterian Church,
Philadelphia. He is buried at Philadelphia National Cemetery,
Philadelphia, Pa.
