BLISSMER FAMILY 1750 - Present Dreams of the Past .... Leading To The Future The Family Researcher threatens to 'retire', but there is always room for a few more bones. From Bliesemer 1750 in Germany, to present day American Blissmer, new descendents continue to join us. It all began with Heinrich Bliesmer, a German, who at age 18, left his homeland for the New World, arriving in 1880. For whatever reason, he chose to settle in now Calumet City, IL (Cook County). 120 years later, the urge arose to try and create his American family history. Research revealed that Heinrich had 13 children, of which only the last 9 survived. That took several years, but the pieces started coming together for who was who. The American tree went on-line. Well now, we knew his name, and that he was from Germany. PERIOD! The new challenge was to find exactly where in Germany, and perhaps locate some ancestors. 3 more years passed of burning the midnite oil. Ol' Heinrich was indeed a stubborn German, lurking secretly amidst hundreds of others. Finally, a single clue poked a hole in the wall. There were 3 families that had come together, and they all settled in Calumet City. Proof positive as to which specific family they now belonged to. Our name went from Bliesemer to Bliesmer to Blissmer. We are from the Fehmarn Island, off the coast of Northern Germany in the Baltic Sea. And, from a fabulous database that has researched 140,000 people from the Fehmarn Island, it was possible to identify Heinrich's parents and siblings. Our web site was quickly updated to include these few bits of information about Germany. But the ancestral brick wall remained. Heinrich's parents were not from the Island, so this created new challenges for another 3 years, searching new areas. Determined luck struck again. I graciously compliment Mr. Dieter Klahn, a German who had been documenting the church books for years. The data I needed was in his records, which provided the ancestors back to 1750. Thank you. So a complete tree refers that there are now all the direct descendents from 1750 down to and including Heinrich and his American family. I also found Heinrich's parents and siblings in Chicago.
