L'usine Hydro-électrique de Blondel.
The Blondel Hydro-Electric Plant
The André Blondel Power
Plant is today the hydro-electric power station
most productive of France.
The exploitation of the factory is ensured by
E.D.F.

The annual production is on
average higher than 2 billion kWh. It would be
necessary to burn 369 000
tons of fuel to obtain the same quantity of
electricity.
The factory-lock of Blondel
allows a very intense river traffic:
approximately 5700 boats,
of trade or pleasure which borrow each year the
inland waterway from large
gauge which is the diversion canal.

At the interior of the factory,
one finds the engine room of impressive size
comprising 6 groups of the
Kaplan type:

Each one of these turbines,
equipped with a mobile blade wheel-propeller
involves at the speed of
58000 produced K.V.A.qui of the current of a tension of 10500 volts. Close
to the factory, the switchyard of E.D.F. raise this tension with 220 000
volts for the French electricity grid.

Andre Blondel's Biography: Andre Blondel Another Biography
blondel
from the "Journal of the Optical Society of America"
(as a scientific unit of measurement)
A unit of luminance suggested in 1942, and named
for the French physicist A. E. Blondel
(1863-1938). One blondel is pi lumens per square meter per steradian;
it is equivalent to the
apostilb.
Parry Moon.
A system of photometric concepts.
Journal of the Optical Society of America, volume 32, pages 348-362
(June 1942).
The unit is pi times the lumens per square meter
per steradian. Such a name is
impossibly cumbersome, so a new name is proposed, the blondel, after
André Blondel who did
pioneer work in photometric nomenclature.
