BOTHA, Louis (b. 27 SEP 1862, d. 27 AUG 1919)
Note: Boer war Kmdt General & first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa 1912.
This obituary for Louis Botha appeared in The Times on August 29, 1919.
The Volksraad is the Peoples Council. Original spellings have been retained.
LOUIS BOTHA
STOUT FOE AND LOYAL FRIEND
MAKER OF SOUTH AFRICAN UNION
A GREAT LEADER.
We deeply regret to announce that, according to a Reuter telegram from Pretoria, General Botha died suddenly at midnight on the 27th-28th inst., from heart failure following influenza.
Louis Botha was born at Greytown, Natal, in 1862. His father was a farmer on a large scale, and Louis was one of six brothers. When Louis was quite a boy his father migrated to the Orange Free State, and as a young man Louis joined Lukas Meyer in an expedition into Zululand to support Dinizulu against a rival for the Zulu throne. Louis Botha was then 17, but already his gifts were recognized by his fellow-Boers, who elected him a field cornet for Ward 2 of the new Republic, which was formed, with its capital at Vryheid, from land granted to the Boers by Dinizulu as a reward for their help. In 1888 Vryheid was incorporated in the Transvaal, and Louis Botha thus became a citizen of the state over whose fortunes he was to preside for so many years.
At 34 he went to Pretoria as a member of the Volksraad, and plunged at once into the troubles which were to lead to the South African War three years later. From the first Botha was an opponent of the Kruger Government. With Joubert and Lukas Meyer he stood for moderation and fair treatment of the English population. When war was imminent he opposed it to the last, and then joined the Vryheid commando under Lukas Meyer, apparently as a simple burgher. But after the first engagementthe battle outside Ladysmith, known as Mournful MondayLukas Meyer was superseded from the command of the division to which the Vryheid commando belonged, and Botha was selected by the unanimous voice of his comrades to take command of the division.
He was an astonishing success as a general. He commanded the Boer force which held the line of the Tugela against the British Army under Buller advancing to the relief of Ladysmith. It is true that at last he was pushed back by force of numbers and strategic pressure in the Free State, but in four months of desperate war he had proved his inborn genius for generalship, and had reinforced his natural ability in the hard school of actual military experience. It is said that when Joubert, the Boer Commander-in-Chief, was on his deathbed he named Botha as his successor; but even if he did not, the choice was inevitable.
