Welcome! This site is devoted to the study of surname BADZIO. My name is Bohdana Badzio, and here I hope to bring together all those interested in the history of this and related surnames. I will post my findings as I gather them, so the contents of the site will be changing continuously. In the meantime, I hope that you will not hesitate to write to me with your comments, suggestions, corrections or additions.

A breakthrough in my research came in Spring 2002 when Kathleen Chapell kindly provided me with the information on one of her ancestors, Maria Badzio, and when Elfa Rinio-Carli notified me of a research paper by Wolfgang Brozio, Untersuchungen und Ergebnisse zur Herkunft des Familiennamens "Brozio" und anderer auf "-zio" endender masurischer Familiennamen, als Grundlage weiterer familien- und siedlungsgeschichtlicher Forschungen ( Altpreußische Geschlechterkunde 30. 1982. Bd. 13 S. 331-350). Since then, I have enjoyed corresponding with all of them and with Bernd Brozio, which I have found to be very interesting and informative.

Today, my research centers on areas near Rastenburg and Angerburg in the former East Prussia (now Ketrzyn and Wegorzewo in woj. Warminsko-Mazurskie, Poland). According to Wolfgang Brozio, the -io ending in mazurian surnames represents a genetive case of nouns in Lithuanian and denotes a patronimic. These surnames may have polish or lithuanian roots. My immediate objective is to trace as many Badzio lineages as I can find, in order to see how this surname changed over time.

Thank you for visiting and enjoy!
