PRYDETH  AN  PRY

Prydeth an Pry, poet of the clay, was the name Jack Clemo took upon becoming a Bard of Gorseth Kernow.1  He was born, raised and lived most of his life in this cottage at  Goonamarris ,2 which sets on what is locally known as Vinegar Point.3

The land is owned by the china clay company, Goonvean, which had plans to demolish the cottage, and erect a laboratory.3  The picture below shows the cottage's location encircled.

A plea by locals, and others who knew this famous poet, culminated in a study to see if the cottage could be saved.4

"Brief Description - The two storey building is of granite construction divided by a central granite wall to form two cottages. The north east cottage (No. 2) [on the right] was occupied by Jack Clemo, it is understood that he left this cottage in 1974 and it is also understood that the cottages have not been occupied since late 1999. The building is roofed with slate, partly tar washed. The accommodation for each cottage was originally a basic 'two up, two down'. Each of the downstairs rooms having a fire place but there are none in the first floors. Each room has one window. Each cottage has a front and back door".5

"A set of two outdoor brick built buildings are situated at the bottom of the garden and are the original toilets. A granite built out shed, divided into two by a brick partition, is located to the north west and may have originally been used as a donkey stable or similar.

Cottage No 1 has been extended by the addition of a breeze-block built kitchen extension to the west side and a bathroom extension to the rear. Cottage No. 2 has been extended by a bathroom extension to the rear and a small lean to on the east wall (probably originally a toilet). There are two dilapidated garden sheds to the west of No. 1 and two dilapidated garden sheds to the rear of No. 2."

The Clemo family worshipped at the Trethosa Methodist Chapel ,6 which houses a Jack Clemo Memorial Room. Besides various memorabilia, a replica of the Clemo cottage is on display.7
