ST STEPHEN IN BRANNEL OVERSEERS OF THE POOR ACCOUNTS
(This material was submitted by Jessie Evans. It mostly mentions the Truscott surname, but there are many other surnames listed. Jessie also submitted the Churchwarden's names.)
Jessie states: "Spelling at the time was not always the way we would spell. To keep the article authentic I have not altered any words only written them the way I saw it. The several parishioners who were bringing sparrows, foxes and badges to the Churchwardens would have been pleased to, not only be paid for their trouble, but also to be helping get rid of the pests. As far as I know there was a shortage of grain and therefore the price would be high. No farmer would want to share his grain with the birds nor animals. I have been told they even ate sparrows in those days.

Jessie continues: "Another interesting note is that a tax was paid by Richard TURNER of �10 for a Tenement in Trethosa. There are several fields on the farm with names like Turners Close."
"1695 26th May shows a Richard TURNER as being one of the Churchwardens. No TRUSCOTT listed among those who paid their tax but there are Richard and Anthony TURNER who paid 8/4d each."
1695. Thomas GEACH appointed to Twelve Men in the room of John RETALLACK deceased. J. MILL was the Curate. The twelve men included A. TRUSCOTT, Thomas TRUSCOTT and Nicholas TRUSCOTT.
1695 has Nicholas TRUSCOTT, John TRUSCOTT and Thomas TRUSCOTT who have signed in the room of Thomas TRUSCOTT.
This year the wardens have paid to Nathaniel TRUSCOTT in sickness 1/6d, Ann and Ellis TRUSCOTT in sickness 3/-, 1 pair of shoose for Peternel TRUSCOTT. Lewis TRUSCOTT child 11 months and 1 week at �2.11/-. (JE - What that means I do not know. It was a large payment for those days. Certainly not a sickness benefit nor the cost of a pair of shoes.)
1696 Payments were made to Ann 2/6, Marion 2/6, Lewis 6d, Frances 4/- and Elizabeth 1/-.
1697 Payments made to parishioners included: Ann TRUSCOTT 2/6d in sickness (JE - This was the first mention of TRUSCOTT receiving help from the Overseers). Marion TRUSCOTT, Lewis TRUSCOTT, Francis TRUSCOTT, Elizabeth TRUSCOTT, Ellis TRUSCOTT for one pair of shoes, Peternel TRUSCOTT. (JE - It is not clear why payments were made to most of those listed. It could have been for work done for the church."
Jessie notes: "A year or so later Nathaniel, Marion, Peternell and Ann TRUSCOTT all received help in sickness."
1699 ? year, shows John TRUSCOTT as being one of the men who signed the book. 1699 listed is John TRUSCOTT among the 12 men who are attending to the church accounts. They have given Marion another pair of shoose and 6d. Peternel is paid in times of sickness and they have also paid to Peter TRUSCOTT' widow, in sickness 5/-.
1707 John TRUSCOTT was an Overseer of the Poor. He received 2/- tax from George TRUSCOTT. The total tax collected that year was �16.10/-.
In 1708 John TRUSCOTT was one of the twelve men.
1713 one of the parishioners listed with property was John TRUSCOTT of Churchtown.
1715 the occupier of a farm in Trethosa was John NANKIVELL. He also paid rates on a Tenement by Art Turner, Bullen and another Tenement by Jan (?name) Turner. John TRUSCOTT received payment for repairs.

1749 John RICKARD was paid for a churchway. Mr TRUSCOTT was paid for bills by Thomas TRUSCOTT and Richard COWLYN who were the Wardens that year.
1750 Twelve Men in the room of Thomas TRUSCOTT. MILL, Curate. We the undersigned appoint Mr. William BLAMEY of Gwindra to one of the 12 men in the place of Mr John NANKIVELL now living in Trefufes (JE - ? Place could be Trethosa as John NANKIVELL was paying tax on the tenement about this time). Also listed is a John TRUSCOTT. The year may be 1750.
Around about the year of 1749 the twelve men included John TRUSCOTT, Thomas TRUSCOTT and Nicholas TRUSCOTT.
By 1757 the church men were using a room of Nicholas TRUSCOTT. There were nine names listed that year but no other TRUSCOTT.
