Robert Bone was born about 1802 or 1803, probably in the parish of St. Stephen In Brannel, Cornwall, England. He was christened there the 23rd of April in 1803, the son of Thomas and Frances Blackmore Bone.

Robert married Mary Rickard on the 7th of February 1824, also in St Stephen In Brannel parish. This is very near St. Austell.

Locating the correct Mary Rickard/Richards is proving to be a little more difficult. There are three Mary Richards in the St Stephen In Brannel records that are of the correct time frame: 1) - 21 November 1802 the daughter of John and Grace Richards; 2) - 2 September 1804 the daughter of William and Sarah Richards; and 3) - 5 March 1805 the daughter of William and Ann Richards.

Robert and Mary Rickard Bone were the parents of the following children. They were all christened in the parish of St Stephen In Brannel, except for Margaret and Francis.

In December of 1826, when son Alexander was christened, the family was living in Coombe. By December of 1829 when son Robert (Jr.) was christened the family was living at Nanjeath. (This link is off site, hit your back button to return.) By March of 1834 the family was living in St. Mewan parish, but daughter Louisa was christened in St Stephen In Brannel. The family continued to live in St. Mewan parish, but sons John Russell (1835) and Josiah (1837) were also christened at St. Stephens, with Robert (Sr.) listed as a miner in both records. Signature of Robert Bone

Robert is listed as an agriculture laborer in the 1841 census of St. Mewan parish, district number 14, being a "part of the parish lying within Trethullan Lane and from thence taking the right and left of the lane to Pothole, continuing the same to the village of Sticker inclusive." This census was obtained through the LDS Family History Center, microfilm roll number 241268. Also listed with Robert was his wife Mary, sons William, Alexander, Robert Jr., Russell, Josiah and daughters Louisa and Margaret.

Mary is listed as being 35 years old, which places her birth in 1806. But at her death in 1881 she is listed as being 78 years old, which places her birth in 1803. Robert is listed as also being 35 years old.

St. Mewan parish is about four miles from, Churchtown, St. Stephen In Brannel, so the family did not move too far from "home".

By the 1851 census (LDS microfilm number 0221058) the family is in the parish of St. Blazey, approxametly 7 miles from St Stephen In Brannel. They are listed as Turnpike Village household number 60, in that "part of the Parish of St. Blazey, which comprises part of the Ecclesiastical District of Par, which lies east of St. Marys Church to the Par River and south to Crinnis, including from the first row, the Turnpike Village both sides to Par lane, Trenovisich farms, Par village north to Polsners Cottage, south by the canal to the wharf, Porth farm, Lemelen farm and part Consoles mine".

Robert is listed as a miner and 48 years old, wife Mary as 47 years old, son Robert as 21 and also a miner, daughter Louisa as 18, son Russell a miner at 16 years old, son Josiah working as a miner's laborer at 13 years old and son Francis at age 9 and also a miner's laborer. All are listed as having been born in St Stephens parish except for the last two, which are listed as Mewan.

Robert and his family are listed as still living in St. Blazey parish at the time of the 1861 census (LDS Film Number 0542830). He is listed as 58 years old and a mine engine worker. With him are wife Mary age 56, son Josia age 23, son Francis age 19. Josia was a mine engine worker and Francis was a copper miner. Also in the household was Eliza Staple, age 18, a boarder, born St. Blazey, mine labourer. It is known that by this time their daughter Louisa had married and was living in Canada. Between 1861 and 1871 Robert and Mary moved to Canada.

Robert and Mary are listed on the 1871 census with their daughter Louisa and son-in-law, Stephen Hugo/Hugoe. They are on page 12, Whitby East, Ontario, Ontario County, Canada (AGLL - American Genealogical Lending Library microfilm number C-9974). Robert's age was given as 68 and his occupation was listed as a laborer. Mary's age was listed as 67 years old.

Robert died the 30 of June in 1871 at the age of 69. He is buried in the  Methodist Cemetery  on Church Street, East of Simcoe Street, on the 7th Concession, in Columbus, East Whitby Township, Durham (then Ontario) County, Ontario, Canada.

In 1881 Mary was still living with her daughter and son-in-law in Columbus, Canada (AGLL microfilm number C-13244) and is listed as being 76 years old. She died the 3rd of September in 1881 and is buried beside her husband in the Methodist Cemetery.

This cemetery had been vandalized and many stones were broken and tossed around the lot. All the stones are now placed in one area which they call a "cairn".

Beside the cemetery is a house built from various parts of the old church. The gentleman, Mr. Squires, who lives in the Columbus "church" house was kind enough to share the following information with Sher Leetooze. Sher's husband, Roger, took this wonderful picture of the house. [Dec 2004].

church

Sometime just after 1900 the chapel was taken down, except for the foundation which was made smaller, approxamately 20 feet was taken off the length. Sher comments, "This would follow with the standard sizes usually found - the chapel likely would have been about 32 feet by 52 feet - the present building is now nearly square. The bricks from the old chapel were used to construct the house - and the old doors and trim and other timbers needed for roof, etc. were all recycled from the old chapel. So look all we want to - we won't see a chapel in the present structure. Mr. Squires says he loves living there - there is a strange calmness about the house. He stated that all the doors upstairs are different and the trim in all the rooms is different - but they like it and will never change it even if nothing matches. They love to give tours through the place to show off all the odd bits!!"

Sher, along with Elizabeth Howard in UK, are collaborating on a book entitled "A Corner For the Preacher" - about the emigration of Bible Christians from Devon and Cornwall and their subsequent immigration to PEI and Ontario. A release date has been set for the end of May, 2005.

THANK YOU Sher, Roger and Mr. Squires for this wonderful information.
