Will of Elizabeth Hicks, 30th June 1843. Transcribed in brief from five pages by Jessie Evans, see note at end.


This is the last will and testament of me Elizabeth HICKS of Ventonwin in the Parish of St Stephens in Brannel in the County of Cornwall Spinster.

I give and bequeath unto Joanna TRUSCOTT, daughter of William TRUSCOTT late of St Stephens aforesaid Yeoman deceased, and who is now living with me (various items of household goods wearing apparel etc. etc.)

I give and bequeath unto Isabella ROWE wife of William ROWE of Cargoll in the Parish of Newlyn Yeoman after the decease of her husband �5 payable out of my Estate called Trewennow situated in the Parish of Creed..

I give and bequeath unto Mary Ann JENKIN Wife of Edward JENKIN of the Parish of St Stephens Yeoman the sum of �19..

I give and bequeath unto Ann YELLAND Wife of Davis YELLAND of the Parish of St Stephens Cordwainer the sum of �19..

I give and bequeath �50 which is owing to me from Robert BISHOP of East Looe, Innkeeper unto Elizabeth Hicks ELFORD.. I hereby declare that the receipts of the said Elizabeth Hicks ELFORD and James BISHOP son of Robert BISHOP

I hereby release and discharge Stephen LANGFORD of St Mewan, Miner, from payment of �50..

I hereby also release Henry POLKINHORN of Ventonwin from his debt to me..

I hereby release Walter TRUSCOTT of Budock, Butcher from his debt to me..

I give unto to Joanna TRUSCOTT, Mary Ann JENKIN and Mary Ann LANGFORD a Mourning suit each.

I also give Elizabeth GILL my Servant (provided she be employed by me at the time of my decease) a suit of Mourning according to her condition in life.

I bequeath unto Thomasine PAYNTER, who now resides with me, and John BENNETTS formerly my Gardener �1 each.

I bequeath unto Harriet HARRIS of number 81 Union Street, Stonehouse, Devon �19..

I give unto Henry LEWARNE of Siany Austell, Currier, �20 as a loken of my esteem..

Properties in share to Elizabeth Hicks SMITH the Wife of John Ball SMITH and Louisa Elizabeth Pease GRIBBLE the Wife of Richard GRIBBLE of Tavistock in Devon, to share in common..one third each and the other third unto Robert BISHOP the younger of the borough of Liskeard, Gentleman (the son of the before named Robert BISHOP)

I give and bequeath unto William TRUSCOTT, Millwright son of Lewis TRUSCOTT of Court in St Stephens �10..

I nominate Henry LEWARNE and Robert BISHOP the younger Executors.

Written on five pages I hereunto my hand and seal this Thirtieth day of June One Thousand and eight hundred and forty three.

Witnesses signed Robert JAMES, Surveyor, Grampound and John YELLAND Painter, Coombe.

Elizabeth HICKS died 16 July 1843 aged 57. Elizabeth is buried with her parents. Walter died Nov 2 1812 aged 78 and Ann (nee TRUSCOTT) July 10 1822 aged 75. There is a monument in the old cemetery St Stephen. She was their only child. Her properties Ventonwyn St Stephen and Trewenow in Creed Parish.
