Pictures from the past

Countryside Idyll 1936

This snapshot was taken about two years before Hitler made an end with Austria, which then became the socalled 'Ostmark'. Times were pretty rough, with a slumping economy, wide-spread unemployment and a semi-fascistic single-party regime ruling. This picture looks like taken in the early afternoon. To the left it shows my grandfather - who was born on a neighboring farm - and grandmother together with a friend of the family and the daughter of the house, my 1C 1R. I called her aunt, nevertheless. None of those four is living anymore. If you would like to show one of your pictures here, please contact me.

  • Internet Medieval Sourcebook - Maps and Images of the world (with some gaps), spanning a pretty wide period of time
  • The David Rumsey Map Collection "... contains to date over 7,180 maps online and focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America cartographic history materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented."

  America:
  • A huge repository of US Maps and GIS data, old and present time. Have a look at one of the great relief maps there, e.g. for the Western US (takes some time to load, depending on the connection).
  • Gazetteer for the US helps you find places - gives ZIP, coordinates, links for maps etc.

  • Find a location and show it on a map with the ShtetlSeeker (Central & Eastern Europe-CEE)
  • The Harmsworth Atlas and Gazetteer (1908-09, London). The description says: "... it presents the maximum geographic scope of the three great European empires (Austria / Hungary, Germany and Russia) just prior to their dissolution at the end of World War I (1918-1919). Certainly worth a look. [Not found 130303; alternative link]
  • The Centennia animated Historical Atlas (commercial). Europe and Middle East, from the beginning of the 19th century to the present
  • The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection - Historical maps of Europe, extending over a period of more than a millennium

  Germany & Bavaria-Bayern:
  • Germany at About.com: Maps, Geography, Data, Cities and much more
  • HGS German Gazetteers - offers an extensive collection and some valuable links.
  • Search for placenames in Germany (in German)
  • Bavarian districts, locations & administrative structure Click on the district-maps to find a town.
  • List of all the places in Bavaria, including small villages being part of a town (as of 1964). Shows placename, town, ZIP, district and county. You'll btw find several villages named BRANDL or similar.
  • Database of over 20,000 locations east of the Oder and Neisse rivers, based on the borders of the eastern German provinces in Spring 1918. Excellent starting point for searching former German places that have changed names once or more.

  • These are "...old and contemporary maps about Austria-Hungary at the beginning of 20th century."  (from Hungary )
  • Austro-Hungarian Empire - Map Index. Small and more simple regional maps.
  • Towns and Cities of Austria - this is a Gazetteer with some 20,000 named places. Gives coordinates, weather and a roughly sketched map.

  • Tools & Reference Materials at Cyndi's List with more than 150,000 searchable links (can't beat that!).
  • Rootsweb's Genealogy Resources on the Internet give lots of hints and links to helpful sites. Also worth a look is the Rootsweb Homepage. Has records, references, tools, help, tips & tricks. And also free webspace if you want to put your family tree on the web.
  • The Worldgen Web Project offers a broad variety of resources and links for worldwide genealogical research
  • Repository of Primary Sources on the Web - showing a comprehensive country index. Although I didn't count them, it looks like there's not a single country missing.
  • Links and resources for genealogical research at Genealogy.com, has a research directory covering the world's ethnic and religious groups. US resources are accessible from a clickable map.
  • The alphabetical Index of Genealogy Resources on the Internet keeps a low profile, the contents are overwhelming nevertheless
  • GenealogyOnline.com has plenty of links for genealogical topics, regions, references and related issues.
  • AncestralFindings.com lets you search for surnames, but offers lots of resources, help and links for your research as well.
  • European Genealogy Sources has a lot of helpful links, ordered after general regions &countries.
  • Former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy: Genealogical research resources from the Institute for Historical Family Research (IHFF - commercial). Diese Seite gibt es auch auf Deutsch
  • East EuropeGen Web with links to all the many old and (re)born countries in the East
  • Sudetenland: Find help with searching for ancestors in the former German settlement regions of Czechia, including Bohemia, Moravia and Austrian Silesia (see on site map; in English and also German).
  • Czechoslovakia - genealogical websites: Czechia, Slovakia, Silesia and Ruthenia are genealogically connected regions. Here you have links and lots of resources for your research.
  • Genealogy in German-speaking areas - Genealogie im deutschsprachigen Raum - presents detailed and comprehensive links and pointers to information and resources (English& German)
  • Internetquellen zur Genealogie des deutschen Sprachraumes (Stand Dezember 1998). There is also an English language version, Internet Sources of German Genealogy (as of Dec 1998)
  • German and German-American FAQs (Frequently asked Questions). Written for the soc.genealogy.german newsgroup to help genealogists " ... who are getting started, either with genealogy or with the Internet."
  • Online German Emigration Databases & Indexes presented by German Roots. Most of this is free to browse or search, some do require payment.
  • Bavaria FAQ (Frequently asked Questions). Created and maintained by the volunteer help team of the Bavarian-Ancestors and Deu-Bayern Rootsweb mailing lists

  • Austrian Churches on the web. Has links for dioceses and several Parishes (listing in German)

  • A site with Multilingual fonts and keyboard utilities or file conversions, and another one with Windows Central and East European Fonts and Keyboard Drivers
  • Great freeware tools to download that may help you manage your PC better.
  • Peter's Computing Info Pages - a fantastic resource for beginning computer users
  • There's a nice configurable small-footprint Internet Searchbar I use myself all the time. It was mentioned by Fred Langa who distributes Langalist, a free computer newsletter I subscribe to.
