Joseph Cullen and Anne Cruse Cullen Come to America

Joseph W Cullen was born in Ireland in 1837. He married Anne Cruse around 1860. Anne was born in Ireland in 1840. About 1868 they crossed the Atlantic and with them were their children. They were living in Columbus, Ohio by 1869. Their oldest daughter Mary Josephine was born in Febuary 1863. Next came Anne who was born in 1866. The first child born in America was Joseph W. born in Columbus, Ohio June 2, 1869. Next came my grandmother, Elizabeth Cullen, born October 4, 1870, in Columbus. Two more sons would follow, John B. born March 27, 1872 and Paul born sometime in 1875, both in Columbus.

Also living with the Cullen family were two young cousins, Elizabeth and James Murray. Their mother was Catherine Cruse Murray, sister of Anne Cruse. I don't know much about the Murrays. I assume they were orphaned in Ireland and came to America with the Cullen family. James died at a young age and Elizabeth Murray lived with a Cullen family member until she died in 1930's. James and Elizabeth Murray are buried together in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.

Here is what I know about the children of Joseph and Anne.

Paul Cullen's Place
374 W State St., Columbus,Ohio

circa 1900

This saloon was on the west side of Columbus. According to old city directories it was at 374 W. State St., and it was also listed as Paul Cullen's residence. The last listing for Paul Cullen was in 1899. That is the last trace of Paul I have. I believe the saloon building was destroyed in great flood of 1913. I don't believe Paul still owned it then. Paul Cullen is in the middle with the apron on. Joe Cullen is the man in the derby not wearing a coat.
