I have traced my Sagar ancestry back to 1800's Virginia. The original spelling may have been Sager although many changed it to Sagar. Actually where they lived is now part of West Virginia. My great-grandfather's given name was William Edward Sagar. He went by Edward Sagar which is on his gravestone. He was born in Hardy County, West Virginia. He was born in 1869 to Levi Sager and Lucinda Dyer. Sometime in the 1870's they moved to Franklin County Ohio. He married Mary Waldo and they had one child, my grandfather Edward Kendall Sagar. In 1910 census, Edward , Mary and their son Edward were living on a farm on Brown Rd. in southern Franklin County, just north of Grove City, Ohio. I believe they worked on the farm for the owner or rented part of it and farmed it themselves. The farm was owned by his cousin John Dyer. William Edward Sager died in 1913 and is buried in Galloway Cemetery near his mother and father. Mary Waldo Sagar lived with or near family members until around 1930 when she left Ohio for Traverse City , Michigan. There she remarried to William R. Hawkins. She died there on February 18, 1946,and is buried in Ogdensburg Cemetery, with the Hawkins family.
