Arthur Henry James Hall was born in 1847 at Wooden Box (later Woodville), Derbyshire, second child (and eldest son) of potter James Hall (1814-1888) and his wife Sarah née Rix (1816-1863).  After attending St Stephen's Daily & Sunday School in Woodville, he became a pupil teacher, and then a clerk at one of the collieries in the Church Gresley-Swadlincote area.  Arthur Hall married Annie Cooper at Manchester in 1872, and they lived successively in the villages of Swadlincote, Newhall and Stanton.  In 1878 they moved to Annie's home parish of Holloway, in London, moving again in the 1880s to Tottenham.  They had two sons and two daughters.

Hall is not listed in any known trade directories or lists of Derbyshire photographers.  The carte de visite of Disraeli shown below was probably copied from an 1860s portrait by a better known studio in the early 1870s, when James Hall was living in Swadlincote.  It is not yet known whether Hall produced any portraits of his own.
