David Sherwood Jones was born c. 1856 at Rugby, Warwickshire.  He married Marian Clarke at Rugby in 1871, and they moved to Derby shortly after, where their first two daughters were born.  Between 1876 and 1879 they moved again, to Matlock Bath, where Jones set up a photographic studio at Matlock Bridge.

D.S. Jones was shown as a photographer in the April 1881 census, and listed his studio at Matlock Bridge, Matlock Bath in both the 1881 and 1887 Kelly's trade directories.  However, by 1891 he was no longer listed in Kelly's, and the census for that year shows that while his wife and children were living on Starkholmes Road, he was absent.  Marianne was still living with her youngest daughter in Matlock in 1901.  Adamson (1997) shows Jones only woperating in Matlock Bridge until 1888.
