J.W. & Ernest Battey

of 8 Norfolk Street, Glossop

John William and Ernest Battey were from a Glossop family that worked in the cotton industry.  With his father and two of his brothers Ernest set up an "art studio" business in the late 1890s.  In the early 1900s he started practising as a photographer and continued from premises on Norfolk Street, Glossop until at least the mid-1920s.

Ernest Battey was born in 1883 at Market Street, Hollingworth, Cheshire, the fourth of six sons and two daughters of John William Battey, a cotton weaver, and his wife Ann, a card room hand in a cotton mill.  In the late 1880s, the family moved to nearby Glossop, where they lived on Market Street in April 1891.  The four oldest sons, by then in their teens, were all working as calico weavers, but Ernest and his sister Gertrude were still at school.

Over the next ten years, however, the family fortunes appear to have changed as John was described in the 1901 census as a "hat dealer shopkeeper".  The three older sons still living at home, Joseph, Albert and Ernest, were described respectively as painter artist, picture framer and picture manufacturer.  However, it appears that Ernest had already taken up the "art" of photography, because the Picture the Past - North east Midland Photographic Record web site includes a photo of a horse-drawn fire engine in Glossop by him, dated 1900.

By 1912 (Kelly) Ernest had set up the "Art Studio" at 8 Norfolk Street, Glossop, and was practising as a photographer.  He was still working at that address when the 1926-1927 Midland Counties directory was compiled.  A post card photo by Battey dated tentatively at c. 1910-1912 has an embossed mark suggesting that his studio may initially have been located in neighbouring Hadfield township.  Adamson (1997) states that the Batteys, father and son, had a studio at 109 Station Road, Hadfield from 1905 to 1907 (JWB), and then from 1908 to 1913 (EB).

Notes: Although the style of the mount indicates that it was produced in the late 1890s, the pose and the style of the clothing worn by the young man suggests that it was a copy of an earlier photograph.  I estimate that the original photo was perhaps taken in the 1880s, although it's difficult to be sure.  The lack of a carefully structured backdrop and other props, as well as the apparent elbow in the top right of the oval frame, and the fact that it is slightly out of focus, makes me think that it was probably cropped from a larger photo of a pair or group of people.
