| Henry John Watson - or Harry as he signed himself - was born c. 1856 at Bow in London. The details of his early life are not known, but he moved to Derby and set up the Victoria Studio at 36 Victoria Street in the mid- to late 1880s. He married Eliza Snell (born c. 1854 at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, daughter of Robert Snell, a baker) at Derby in 1890. Trade directories suggest that between 1887 and 1891, Watson's studio had moved to new premises at 130 Burton Road, although he and Eliza were living at 25 Webster Street in early April 1891. He remained at the Burton Road studio until at least 1895 (Kelly & Bulmer), and the 1901 census shows him still practising as a photographer. Craven (1993) states that he was in business until 1904. |

Philip Augustus Hudgell was born in 1867 at
Newton Abbot, Devon, son of Baptist minister George Hudgell (1838-1921)
and his wife Adelaide Elizabeth Smith (1831-1902). He
followed
his father into the ministry, training at Spurgeon College, and settled
in Derby in the early 1890s, where he became minister at the Junction
Street Baptist Chapel in Derby. He later moved to Addleston
and
Bognor Regis. |
