Henry John Watson - or Harry as he signed himself - was born c. 1856 at Bow in London.  The details of his early life are not known, but he moved to Derby and set up the Victoria Studio at 36 Victoria Street in the mid- to late 1880s.  He married Eliza Snell (born c. 1854 at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, daughter of Robert Snell, a baker) at Derby in 1890.  Trade directories suggest that between 1887 and 1891, Watson's studio had moved to new premises at 130 Burton Road, although he and Eliza were living at 25 Webster Street in early April 1891.  He remained at the Burton Road studio until at least 1895 (Kelly & Bulmer), and the 1901 census shows him still practising as a photographer.  Craven (1993) states that he was in business until 1904.

The child appears to have been tied to the chair with a sash, probably to keep him/her still!

The card was printed by Marion Imp of Paris & London, and this particular design (Seated Lady Reg. 41062) is known from 1888 to 1896.  A code adjacent to the card printer's name at the bottom left hand corner of the reverse has been interpreted by Roger Vaughan as being produced in either 1888 or 1889.
