Horatio Nelson Harrop was born in 1829 in Manchester, Lancashire, the youngest of six children of Horatio Nelson Harrop (1798-1874) and Martha Platt.  He and his common-law wife Elizabeth Higgins had at least two sons and a daughter before Elizabeth died in 1886.

H.N. Harrop established a daguerreotype gallery in Corporation Street, Manchester in the summer of 1853, but he made two extended visits to Chesterfield in Derbyshire in 1854 and 1855.  In May 1854, Harrop set up a temporary studio at the Angel Inn, Market Place, Chesterfield and remained there until July 1854 [Derbyshire Courier, 6th May 1854, page 2, col.5].  He returned to the Angel Inn the following May and took photographic portraits in Chesterfield until June 1855, when he presumably returned to Manchester.  The address of the premises in Manchester changed from 460 Stockport road to 420 Stockport road between 1879 and 1886.  He continued as an artist and photographer in that city until his death in 1892.  His son, also Horatio Nelson Harrop, appears to have continued the studio from premises at 3 Etruria st, Chorlton-on-Medlock until he, too, died in 1896.

Unidentified baby
by H.N. Harrop of 60 Market Street & 460 Stockport Road Studios, Manchester
Undated, but probably taken in the mid- to late 1870s

Format: Carte-de-visite
Size: 63 x 102 mm

Notes: (DM) I believe both pictures to be of Ms Frances L Josephy (1900 – 1984).  There is a definite facial similarity to the little girl shown in these images to other photographs of Ms Josephy in my collection.
(BP) The age of this photo, interepreted from the style of the photography, the printing on the reverse, and the address of the studio, means that it cannot be Ms. Josephy.

Notes: (DM) I believe both pictures to be of Ms Frances L Josephy (1900 – 1984).  There is a definite facial similarity to the little girl shown in these images to other photographs of Ms Josephy in my collection.
(BP) The centre parting suggests it is indeed a girl.  However, the age of the CDV means that it cannot be Ms Josephy.
