John William Wayne was born c. 1868 at Poplar or Bow in London, the second of nine children of a butcher John William Wayne senior (1843-1908), and his wife Susannah (Susan) Oram (born c. 1844, also at Poplar).  The family moved back to John William Wayne senior's original home county, Derbyshire, when John was very young, initially to Shottle, and then settling in the village of Idridgehay in about 1870.

John William Wayne first trained for a job in the post office, and was shown as the Idridgehay "sub-postmater" in April 1891.  However, by 1895 (Kelly) he had moved to Belper, where he had a studio on New Road until 1899.  After a brief spell in Chapel Street, he moved to premises in King Street, where he remained at least until 1906 (Adamson, 1997).

Notes:  John William Wayne was shown as unmarried in the 1901 Census and, according to FreeBMD, married Florence Beatrice Bennett in the Derby Registration District in the June Quarter of 1910.  The "leg of mutton" sleeves of this woman suggest the photograph was taken in the late 1890s, so it is not clear if she was Wayne's wife or not.
