Rupert Stearn was born in about 1868 at Cambridge, one of five sons of the noted Cambridge photographer Thomas Stearn, who headed the firm of Thomas Stearn & Sons, still in business in 1957.  Thomas Stearn (born c. 1825 Bloomsbury, London) established a photographic studio at 72 Bridge Street, Cambridge around 1866. His wife Eliza (born c. 1829, Poplar, London) was also a photographer and in the 1881 Census gave her occupation as "photographist". Thomas and Eliza A. Stearn produced a number of children who became photographers in adult life - Henry C. Stearn (born c. 1860 Cambridge), Walter James Stearn (born c. 1864 Cambridge & died February 1929) and Rupert Stearn.

By April 1891 Rupert and his older brother Walter James (c1865-1929) were working as photographers at St Andrew's.  Rupert married Alice Bowden (born c. 1866 at Great Warford, Cheshire) at Macclesfield, Cheshire in 1894, and shortly afterwards set up studio in Buxton or Bakewell, Derbyshire, apparently serving both villages.
