| William
Edmund Keetley
was born in 1882 and his brother Harold
Percy Keetley
in 1885, both at Bakewell, Derbyshire, sons of gardener William Keetley
(1858-1949) and his wife Annie née Johnson
(1860-1948). By 1901 the two young men were working as pupil
teachers in Bakewell. The existence of a cabinet card with
commercially produced mount (see below) and several other photographic
prints suggests that William and Harold briefly operated a studio from
the family home at The Avenue, Bakewell in the mid-1900s.
However by 1912, when the Kelly's directory of that year was published,
Harold had moved to Smedley street, Matlock Bank, where he was a
sub-postmaster. There was no listing for the photographic
business in that year under Bakewell, although William may have moved
it elsewhere. William married Millicent Clare in 1910. Harold married his first wife Annie Emma Thurlow in 1909, but both she and their first child died a year later. He remarried in 1915, to Dorothy A. Crowe, and they had a son, Peter H. (b. 1918), and a daughter Diana M. (b. 1921). William and Harold Keetley also had a younger sister Alice Annie (born in 1889) who married Harry Nelson in 1911, and two other siblings who died young, Gladys Flora (b. & d. 1887) and Charles Herbert (1891-1899). Alice bought her parents' house in Bakewell in 1935. |

Elizabeth
Johnson née Hill
(1824-1912) by W. & H. Keetley of The Avenue, Bakewell Undated, but probably taken c.1904-1908 Format: Cabinet Card Image © & courtesy of Tim Ryan Notes: This photograph was
among several in the house formerly occupied by William Keetley in
Bakewell. The subject was identified as "Annie Johnson's mother."
Annie Johnson was William & Harold Keetley's mother, and this
was therefore the photographers' maternal grandmother. She
was born Elizabeth Hill at Coleorton (Leicestershire) in 1824, daughter
of Thomas and Elizabeth, and married John Johnson at Coleorton in
1854. Her daughter Ann was born on 16 January 1860, their
third child, and married William Keetley at Derby on 14 March
1881. Elizabeth Johnson died at Bakewell in early 1912, aged
87. |
