| William
Johnson was
born c. 1866 in York. He set up a studio in Long Eaton prior
to
1891,
and a trade directory of that year - presumably compiled in late 1890 -
showed his studio on the High Street. On census night in
April
1891,
however, he was sharing lodgings at 1 Stanley Terrace in Long Eaton
with
another photographer, Arthur
Farnsworth. A carte de
visite
is known (see below) taken under the auspices of the partnership of Johnson
& Farnsworth. William Johnson was married in 1892, and a
daughter was born at Wakefield in 1894. It appears that he did not work
as a photographer much after 1892 either. Certainly by 1899 he had
returned to Long Eaton and was a partner in a lace manufacturing
business, Marshall & Johnson. The 1901 Census shows him him with
wife, daughter and a domestic servant, living at 128 Derby Road; the
trade directory identifies this as Westfield House. The Marshall half
of the business was probably Joseph Marshall (born c. 1871 in
Mansfield, Notts) who was living at 134 Derby Road in 1901, three doors
down from William Johnson.
Arthur Farnsworth was born c. 1865 at York, the oldest son of William Farnsworth (1838-1874) and Jane Hart. He married Christiana Greenwood in the Registration District of Wharfedale, West Riding of Yorkshire, in the first quarter of 1892, and had three children in Shipley, Yorkshire between 1893 and 1900. By the time of the census in April 1901, Arthur was working as a railway carriage painter in the Borough of York. It seems likely, therefore, that his foray into Derbyshire was brief, and that his career as a photographer probably did not last much later than 1891. |
