| William
Leuchars was born on 25 June
1863 at Monikie, Forfar (Angus), Scotland,
one of four children of a tailor James Leuchars (c1835-1898) and his
wife Margaret
Mackenzie (c1836-). He started working in the photographic
business in his
late teens, and by the time of the April 1881 census was described as a
photographic
artist, aged 17, living with his parents in
Monikie.
He married Betsy Ogilvie Simpson (1864-) on 20 Jun 1888 in Forfar, at
which time he was working as a "photographic artist" and Betsy as a
teacher. They moved to Elswick, Northumberland shortly after,
and were living at 150 Stanton Street in that town in April
1891. William was shown as a photographer. They moved to Derbyshire between 1891 and 1895, and settled in Chesterfield. According to Adamson (1997), William Leuchars operated studios in the High Street, Chesterfield from 1895 to 1907, and at 13 Market Place, Chesterfield from 1904 until at least 1926. Trade directory entries, however, show him at the High Street address in 1895, but at Market Place from 1899 onwards. The census of April 1901 shows William and his wife living at 30 Clarence Road. |

performance
schedule at Pavillion Theatre Ayr, March 1915 with a song 'Everybody
Rag With Me' associated with her. She appears to be dressed
as a
Principal Boy. |

Leuchars of Chesterfield Undated, but probably taken c. 1896-1897 Format: Cabinet Card Image © & courtesy of Picture the Past Notes from Picture the Past: This photograph is of an outing to the Peak District of staff and pupils of Chesterfield Grammar School. The headmaster, James Mansell, is seated in the centre of the picture. The little girl on the extreme right is his elder daughter Eva. Seated at the front to the left of the picture is her mother, Sarah Mansell, with her son Ralph Mansell. Sitting close to the headmaster is the head boy, Frederick 'Gus' Sharpe, who married Eva Mansell in 1914. He was then Chesterfield's Medical Officer of Health. Eva Mansell was born in 1890 and looks about six in this picture, dating it to approximately 1896-7. James Mansell died in Buxton in 1943. |
