John Hueston

on the 14th: as a result of a duel with Alcee Labranche, newly elected member of Congress; Published the Baton Rouge Gazette for over 2 years, self educated, born in Morristown, N.J.; 30 yrs old; While staying at the St. Charles Hotel in New Orleans and playing pool in that establishment, he was approached by Labranche who asked if he was Hueston. When he replied that he was and offered his hand, Labranche struck him several times with his cane knocking him senseless, then left. Hueston, a staunch Whig, wrote that the newly elected group of congressmen was one of the weakest. Labranche took exception. When Hueston recovered he challenged Labranche to a duel. They met at "The Oaks" on the Gentilly Rd about 3 miles from the St. Charles Hotel at 5:00 pm. The weapons were double barrel guns, loaded with balls, at a distance of 40 yards. In the first round, Labranche fired first and missed both. Hueston fired once and missed and time expired (?) before he could fire the second. In the second round, Labranche fired first again and put a ball through Hueston's pants near his knee. Hueston missed again with both. In the third round, Labranche put a ball through Hueston's hat, Hueston missed again. The fourth round had Labranche putting a ball through Hueston's ribs. He was carried to a nearby house where he was attended to by the Drs. Graham, Labature, and Stone. He died at 11 pm. His family inBaton Rouge didn't know what was happening. Captain Scott , aboard the DeSoto , was bringing his body back to Baton Rouge and took his time to let another boat arrive in time to tell the family and residents of his death.
