The Johnson Family
George
& Mary JOHNSON lived in the North Nottinghamshire parish of Norton
Cuckney, most likely in the village
of Holbeck. Their son
George was born in 1794 and baptised at the Norton Cuckney parish church, St.
Mary's. George junior married Charlotte Stubbings in 1817 also in St. Mary's.
Little more is known about George & Mary at this time. It has not been
possible to find either a marriage record for George & Mary, nor a baptism
record of George senior, the Parish Records and Bishop’s Transcripts for Norton
Cuckney are in a very poor state for this period, i.e. 1750 - 1800.
Child of George & Mary
George
JOHNSON & Charlotte STUBBINGS lived in the Norton Cuckney parish after
their marriage, their first two children were baptised there. George who was an
agricultural Labourer and Charlotte moved across the county boundary to
Creswell in North Derbyshire around 1820, a further nine children were born
whilst the family lived in Creswell, what is known of these children will be
shown on following pages.
Both George and Charlotte
lived in Creswell until their deaths George died in 1868 aged 75 and Charlotte
in 1883 aged 88, they were both buried at the local church. At that time
Creswell was part of the parish of Elmton and the local church was St. Peter's
in Elmton. After George's death Charlotte
lived with Joseph, one of their sons.
Children of George &
Charlotte
Ann
JOHNSON the eldest
child of George and Charlotte, was born in Cuckney in 1817 and baptised the
following year in the Norton Cuckney parish church, after moving to Creswell
with her parents she had a child whilst still unmarried, Sarah was born in 1838
and baptised in Elmton, nothing more is known about Ann or her daughter Sarah
at this time.
Sarah
JOHNSON was born in
Holbeck in 1820 and baptised in Norton Cuckney, she married William TURNER
from Yorkshire in 1838, they
had seven children.
Hannah
JOHNSON was born in Creswell in 1822 and baptised in Elmton, she gave birth
to George Brockmer JOHNSON, whilst still unmarried, in 1844, it is not until
George's wedding in 1866 that we have evidence of his father, on the marriage
certificate of George, his father is recorded as "George BROCKMER
(deceased), Schoolmaster". Hannah married William RICHARDSON in 1856, they
had two children.
Joseph JOHNSON was born in Creswell around
1825 although no record has yet been found of his baptism, he married Jane
GODLEY from Whitwell, Derbyshire at Elmton in 1848, Jane already had daughter
Elizabeth when she married Joseph, however she may have been Joseph's child as
according to census records she took the name of Johnson along with her mother
after the marriage. What happened to Jane and Elizabeth is not known, but
Joseph married again in the late 1870s although the actual marriage has not
been traced.
We
know from census records that Joseph was living with Jane and her daughter in
1851, he was back living with his parents in 1861 and with his widowed mother
in 1871, in 1881 he was living with second wife Fanny Elizabeth, their son John
Reynolds, and his mother. So we have a clear link through mother Charlotte but
no record yet of the second marriage. Joseph was buried along with his wife and
son at Creswell, the gravestone can be seen just inside the churchyard.
Mary JOHNSON was born in Creswell around the
end of 1826 being baptised at Elmton on 4th January 1827. In 1849
she married Gervase GREAVES, sometimes known as Jarvis. They lived most of
their married life in Ridgeway, Eckington, Derbyshire, where Gervase was a
Sickle Maker, records of 12 children have been found. see GREAVES.
Charlotte
JOHNSON was born in Creswell and baptised at
Elmton on 10 th May 1829. She married John SMITH a miner from
Stavely at Elmton on 18th June 1846. So far nothing has been found
of them since their marriage.
Elizabeth JOHNSON was born in Creswell and
baptised at Elmton on 26th February 1832. She was at home with her
parents for the 1841 census, and working as a servant in Whitwell at the time
of the 1851 census. Nothing has been found of her since 1851.
Jane JOHNSON was born in Creswell and baptised
at Elmton in 1833. She married Moses Wheeldon around 1850, and had at least
seven children. Census records show that they spent most of their married life
in Mosborough/Eckington, see WHEELDON.
George JOHNSON & Hannah JACKSON George
the youngest of George and Charlotte's two sons was born in Creswell sometime
around the beginning of 1835, he was baptised at Elmton and married on
Christmas Day 1862, his bride at the Norton Cuckney parish church was Hannah
JACKSON, the illegitimate daughter of Sarah JACKSON. George who was an
Agricultural Labourer moved around quite a lot with his family, his children
being born in three different Nottinghamshire villages. George and Hannah were
both buried in Elmton, George in 1900 and Hannah in 1885.
Martha
JOHNSON was born in Creswell and baptised at
Elmton in1838. She married William BUTLER from Boughton, in Elmton on 22nd
July 1861. Records of four children have been found but more research is needed
on this branch of the family. It would appear from the census records that
Martha and youngest daughter Charlotte may have been living as paupers in the
Worksop Workhouse in 1881, but records need checking further, see BUTLER.
