(01) William Atte Brigge Esq.

William was born before 1334 in Salle, Norfolk, England.  William, of Salle, County Norfolk, was the first recorded ancestor of this surname.  He was lord of the lands of Salle, Norfolk, and in the thirteenth century became known as "William Atte Brigge".  States an ancient history of Norfolk, the family was "descended from an ancient family at Salle, in Norfolk, who before the time of Edward I assumed the surname of De Ponte or Pontibus, i.e., 'at Brigge' or 'at Brigges,' "a name assumed from their dwelling....by the bridge or bridges over the currents" of the river.  In various deeds, he is called "William de Ponte de Salle" and in others "De Pontibus de Salle"; he was living at Salle as late as 1334.

He had five children:

Child No. 1:  Walter Brigge clerk was born before 1389 in Salle, Norfolk, Eng.

Child No. 2:  John Atte Brigge Esq. was born before 1383 in Salle, Eng.

Child No. 3:  Robert Atte Brigge was born before 1393 in Salle, Norfolk, Eng.

Child No. 4:  Thomas Brygge was born before 1392.  Of Holt, living in 1400; he was a notable figure of his time; in 1392, he journeyed to the Holy Sepulchre of our Lord with Sir Thomas Swinburne, Knight, and an account in MSS. is preserved at Caius College Library, Cambridge, written by himself.

Child No. 5:  William Atte Brigge was born before 1401.  He was of Holt, living in 1401.
