The Old Briggs/Keeney Cemetery

This cemetery located in Middlebury Township, Tioga County, PA has recently been rediscovered and investigated.  The cemetery is in a very inaccessible location.  The area is mountainous, overgrown with trees, brush, briars, and is prime rattlesnake territory.  The number of graves there is estimated at 50-100.  A few stones (mostly on their sides and partially buried) are readable.  E. H. Briggs and Rhoda, Keeney and Goodwin are some of the readable stones.  Many of the graves are marked with field stones and probably a lot are sunk or buried in the ground.  The red dot shows the location on the map below.  This cemetery was probably in use during the 1800's.  The early road was located on the north side of the stream along the base of the mountain before the two bridges were built that now carry Route 287.  Photos of the readable stones will be added when available.

The photograph below is of one of the few readable stones in the cemetery.

This is the grave marker for Ebenezer H. Briggs (son of (14) Oliver Briggs and Lydia Hoag) and his wife (Rhoda Smith).

The inscription reads:

E. H. BRIGGS

BORN

Jan. 15, 1816

RHODA

HIS WIFE BORN

Aug. 25, 1820

Died Aug. 13, 1874

The date that Ebenezer died is not on the stone (although there is space left for it).  Apparently Rhoda died first and then when Ebenezer died the date did not get put on the stone.
