APRIL 20, 1986 BRISTOL ORPHANS The word Orphan is derived from an Indo-European word-form 'orbh' which means to separate. This form also passed down in old Slavic languages as 'orbu' and 'rabu' (slave), whence came Slavic 'rabota' (work), and through Czech 'robota' (compulsory labor, drudgery) until it was coined for ROBOT. Both these words, orphan and robot, have special meaning for 'unconnected Bristols.' We are genealogical orphans, but we are also the ones who have been relegated to the role of 'robot', i.e. drudge when it comes to doing research on our Bristol ancestors. Collectively we have probably amassed more information on the Bristol family than 'connected' Bristols have in the whole history of the Bristol Family Association.' In all our drudgery, many of us are still dead-ended when it comes to finding that elusive missing link. It is to us that this letter is addressed. Dear Bristol Cousin: Just because we can't prove we're related is no reason we can't be family. So this is an invitation to all my fellow orphans to get together. Let's help each other out in our research and at least save ourselves some time, expense and energy, whether or not we ever link up with our missing ancestors. Enclosed are names and addresses of all the people I know, or know of, who are researching unconnected Bristols-with some notes on their particular line of interest. Besides sharing information which will help us in our pursuits, some of us may have expertise in, or access to, sources not so readily available to the rest of us, who may be willing to share, or exchange, with those of us who don't. At the very least we should be able to prevent needless duplication of effort.
