The Index to the Antiquaries Journal, which covers 1921-1930 (Vols 1-10) notes that Theophilus Caldwell Sandeman was elected to membership of the Society and admitted in 1930.

Barclay was a thick-set man of medium height, dark-haired and swarthy. He had the misfortune to speak through his nose with a twang, and was not a success in the House of Commons as a speaker. He had independence of character and considerable ability. The Forfarshire magnates were very satirical about the great county of Forfar being represented by an Aberdeen manure merchant, but he held

the seat through several contested elections. One of his opponents had called a meeting in the south end of the county, over which a Colonel Sandeman of Stanley, a strong Tory laird, presided. Barclay mingled with the crowd to hear what was said, and described the scene to me. There was a great deal of booing

exasperated Sandeman, who kept shaking his fist at the loons. One of them called out, "Fü did ye no gie us a footba’ field?" Up jumped Sandeman and roared out, "I will not give you a football field, but I will be glad to give you a

CAPTAIN GEORGE AMELIUS CRAWSHAY SANDEMAN, 3rd (attached 1st) Hampshire Regiment, who was killed in Flanders on April 26, was the only child of the late Major George Glass Sandeman, of Fonab, Perthshire, formerly of the 3rd Black Watch. He was born in 1883, and was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his degree in 1907, and was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1913. Captain Sandeman, who had travelled a good deal, succeeded his father in the Fonab property 11 years ago and was unmarried. He is the second only child in the Sandeman family who has been killed in action during the war.

A memorial service for Captain George A. C. Sandeman, Hampshire Regiment, of Fonab, Perthshire, and 24 Grosvenor-gardens, who fell in action near Ypres on April 26, will be held at St. Peter’s Church, Eaton-square, on Thursday, June 3, at 12 noon. A service will be held at the Episcopal Church, Pitlochry, on the same day.

At St. Peter’s, Eaton-square, yesterday, a memorial service was held for Captain George A. C. Sandeman, Hampshire Regiment, who fell in Action on April 26. Canon Tupper Casey officiated. Among those present were Mrs. Alastair Sandeman, Captain and Mrs. W. W. Sandeman, Mrs. E. F. Sandeman, Sir N. and Lady Bowden-Smith, Lord and Lady Dynevor, Sir Reginald Custance, the Hon. F. Curzon, Lord Eustace Percy, Viscount and Viscountess Clifden, Viscount Wolmer, the Hon. Arthur Villiers and the Countess of Dartmouth.

Born on April 18, 1883, in London. As a slow left-arm bowler he was in the Eton XI in 1901 and 1902. In his last year he took all ten wickets for 22 in the first innings of Winchester and 16 for 46 in the match, when, bowling against the wind, he made the ball swerve and was almost unplayable. His 35 wickets for Eton in 1902 cost 11.62 runs each. At Oxford he was choen for the Freshmen’s match, but did not obtain his blue. He played three matches for Hampshire in 1913, taking only 3 wickets at 41.33. He also played for the Eton Ramblers and Free Foresters. He was Squire of Fornab, Perthshire. Serving as a Captain in the 3rd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, he was killed in action at Zonnebeke, Belgium, on April 26, 1915, aged 32.

The naval officer injured in the motor-car accident at Portsmouth on Tuesday evening is Commander Tyndale Biscoe, retired, and not Captain H. G. G. Sandeman, as reported yesterday.

The mistake was due to the fact that Captain Sandeman’s card was found on Commander Tyndale Biscoe when he was conveyed to hospital. Commander Tyndale Biscoe is progressing favourably. He was on a visit to Hayling Island, and was returning when the accident occurred.

Sandeman, Morden House, Royston, Cambridgeshire, and Constance Fenwick; unmarried. Educated Eton; Christ Church, Oxford. Resided many years in Germany, France and Spain (and speaks the languages of these three countries fluently). Has travelled widely. In Peru descended Huallaga River by raft, and in remote districts collected botanical specimens for Herbaria of Kew Gardens and University of Oxford, each of which has received from him some 6,000 specimens, many being unknown to science. Made journey of exploration from Rio de Janeiro to Lima, 1942. Served [in] European War, 1914-1918: Intelligence Corps, B.E.F., France, Aug 1914; War of 1939-45: a regular during 1940 in War Dept.

SANDEMAN, Edward, M.Sc., M. Inst. C.E., M.I.W.E.; F.R.M.S. consulting civil engineer; born 8 Dec 1862; fifth son of late William Sandeman of Hollin Bank, Church,

Lancashire; married Edith Mary, daughter of William P. Vosper, Merafield, Plympton

St. Mary, Devon; two sons. Constructed works for supplying Plymouth with water from Dartmoor, whilst acting as Water Engineer to that town, 1891-1900; Chief Engineer to Derwent Valley Water Board, 1900; and during succeeding 12 years constructed works of water supply costing three millions sterling for supply of Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield, and the county of Derby; subsequently responsible for design and construction of waterworks for numerous authorities in British Isles; Past President of Institution of Water Engineers, and for many years Associate Professor at Victoria University, Manchester; Member of several technical committees.

THE Hayling Golf Club has its home in the south-west corner of Hayling Island, looking across the water to Spithead and the Isle of Wight. When the Club was formed in 1883, as the Hayling Island Golfing Club, with Mr. Fleetwood Sandeman as its first captain and a membership that included a contingent of stalwarts from the London Scottish Club, the course was laid out on Beach Common, which in the sixties had been the short-lived scene of an annual race meeting. Even at that time, however, it was obvious that the proper site for the links was on the typical golf country further west, known as South Warren, and the ground on Beach Common was gradually given up as the links gravitated westward. Later on, when the Club purchased the freehold of the course outright, it was completely rearranged and is now laid out entirely in the country of sandhills and gorse to the west of the commodius Club House, which in 1899 replaced the "tin tabernacle" that had up to then fulfilled this function.

The course falls naturally into three more or less equal parts, the first seven holes in a comparatively open country of rolling dunes, then half a dozen holes among the giant sandhills, winding up with the thirteenth where our drive has to carry the famous bunker known as "the Widow," and finally five holes home through a flatter country of bunkers and gorse. Beyond the thirteenth hole is the quaint little harbour of Kench, so that the fourteenth hole is the starting point for Portsmouth members coming to the course by ferry from Eastney. These members have their own "Ferry Club House" behind the thirteenth green. The links, which was the scene of the English Ladies Championship in 1936 and again in 1948, is in every respect a first class test. Its total length is over 6,500 yards, which must be accounted full championship standard even in these days. This includes two long holes of 530 and 510 yards, and seven more holes of varying lengths between 410 and 458 yards that will be stiff two-shotters even for would-be champions. (p.53)
