James H Brown was born in Hebron, NY in 1824. We belive his father was David S. Brown, who is buried next to him in the Brown plot in the Grove cemetery (Center, WI). James migrated to Janesville with his wife, Elizabeth Palmer, and son Sheldon T in 1855, and worked as a carpenter. He and Elizabeth had 2 additional children, one of who died shortly after birth, and one, Anna Cora, who died as Elizabeth became sick and died 8 months after birth (1861). James continued to work as a carpenter until 1865, when he joined the Wisconsin 5th Infantry for the Civil War. He married Jenette Thorburn the same day he entered service, then was mustered out about a year later when the war ended. After the war, James and Jenette settled in Center and took up farming.
