1880 Federal Census of Mecklenburg County, NC, Lemley Township, page 469a
Robert and Martha are missing in the 1870 and 1880 Census Record. I recently discovered why they were missing in 1880 (but still have not located them in 1870). Below explanation is from the Old Mecklenburg Society Genealogical Society Quarterly [OMGS] 2008 Quarterly, Vol 26, No 3, page 11-14; "Missing Pages from the 1880 Census For Mecklenburg County," written by Ellen Poteet: While looking through back issues of the OMGS Quarterlies, we found an article in a 1989 issue (Volume 7, No.2) concerning a page missing from the 1880 federal census for Mecklenburg County. The author, Jim Caldwell, had discovered it while researching his Caldwell family in Lemly Township. Caldwell checked the microfilm roll at his local branch of the National Archives in California, only to find the page missing from that roll also. He wrote to the National Archives in Washington, D. c., and was told the page was missing from the master copy as well. Then he learned that a copy of that census had been sent to the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. On the outside chance that the missing page might be in Raleigh, he contacted the Archives. He was advised that the missing page was intact in the Archives copy. The missing page 469 has two sides, A and B. Caldwell was sent only side B, from which he listed only the heads of households in the Quarterly article. We obtained sides A and B for this article and have transcribed all columns on the schedule except for the health information, which had no items listed. Caldwell suggested that if you suspect pages are missing from other census microfilm rolls for North Carolina you should ask the North Carolina State Archives to check its copy for the page or pages.
