His Revolutionary Pension file shows he died 9 Feb 1843.

MARRIAGE RECORD

======================

No marriage bond, church record or family bible records the event; however, sources that preserve the fact of Samuel Wilson's marriage to Hannah Knox, daughter of Capt. Patrick Knox, include:

[1]  "Miss Hannah Knox, daughter of Captain Patrick Knox, killed at the battle of Ramsour's Mill, who married Samuel Wilson, a solder of the Revolution."

---------

Source: Sketches of Western North Carolina; C. L. Hunter;  first published 1877; digital document source: Genealogy.com; Family Archive CD 524; page 146

[2] " Hannah Knox, the wife of Samuel Wilson, Jr., was a daughter of Capt. Patrick Knox, who was killed at Ramseur's Mill, in Lincoln Co, during the Revolution.  Samuel WIlson Jr, and his wife Hannah raised a large family, among whom was Polly Wilson, who married her cousin, Benjamin Wilson, a son of Maj. David Wilson.  Jeff Wilson, the only son, left no issue, and the daughter Patsy Wilson became the wife of Hugh McKnight, according to the Sommerville account*."  *Note: Sommerville's History of Hopewell, pp 195-199 outlines the family, but apparently gives no dates.

PRB Notes:

Other Wilsons listed on page 362 include given names that have appeared on lists of BROTHERS of Samuel Jr:

David (1-4-2-0-1) (b. bef 1774; this must be Major David Wilson)

John (1-0-0-0-1) (b. bef 1774)

and

Joseph (1-0-0-0-0) b. bef 1774

Joseph is NOT listed as a brother...who is he?  This person is probably a nephew.  A Jos. M. Wilson as the "Commissioner" for the Sale of Samuel's 1843 Estate...could be this Joseph Wilson...

NOTE: John and Jane may NOT have been living with Samuel and Hannah.  Samuel may simply have been looking after their FINANCIAL interest because of fiscal management issues.  See Capt Patrick's estate records and the 1792 legal dispute involving Capt James Knox, maternal grandfather, and namesake of James Knox Polk, the 11th President...

Little is known about Samuel L. Wilson, son of Samuel Wilson, Jr.  He is mentioned in his father's July 1841 LWT as  deceased and buried at Hopewell in an unmarked grave.  In the 1800 Census below, the Samuel whom we know m. Hannah Knox, was referenced at Samuel Wilson SR.  This of course was long after HIS father Samuel Wilson SR had passed on in1778, so the designation of SR seems to indicate there was another, younger Samuel Wilson alive in 1800 -- and one might assume this was his son, Samuel L. Wilson.

On 10 July 1800, two deeds recorded land transactions between Samuel Wilson (legal Guardian, and brother-in-law), and John Knox.

The net of these two transactions is that John Knox exchanged (1) land owned by this father Patrick Knox's Estate, to which John's mother, Mary (Smith Knox) Knox held "dower interests" -- which was located on the "east side of the Catawba River," for (2) land of equal value ($1500) located on McDowell Creek which runs into the Caldwell Station Creek area in present-day Huntersville:

Listed in this order, on this page are:

Martin Steele;

Widow Blakely[1];

William Hill, Sr;

William Hill Jr;

Robert Dunlap;

James Curry[2]

[1] These are all "neighbors" near McDowell Creek (Bk16, page 460), located in present-day Huntersville. Not listed in the Deed, but located right in the middle of the bunch is the "Widow Blakely" who d. bef January 1838.

In 1853 John Knox's LWT mentions 126 A he called "the Blakely Place" as already being passed on to his son, R. J. W. Knox.  [See 7 March 1846 Deed from John Knox to Robert J. Wilson Knox for 126 A on the HEADWATERS of McDowells Creek.]  Descendants of Robert J. Wilson Knox believe this was Robert and Martha's "old" homeplace located on Bailey Road at the intersection of Poole Place, Cornelius.

[2] Also on the list, but not mentioned on the deeds, is James Curry  who was co-signer with Samuel Wilson for John and Jane Knox's Guardian Bond made in Mecklenburg Co, NC,  April 1794.

All this puts John Knox, the son of Patrick Knox in the same place as John Knox, b. 22 May 1777...

State of North Carolina}        On this 10th day of November 1832

Mecklenburg County   }         personally appeared in open Court, before the Judge of the Superior Court of Mecklenburg County now sitting, Samuel Wilson a resident of said County & State, aged 82 years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832.  That he entered the service of the United States, under the following named officers and served as here in stated, being a part of the time in the militia and a part in regular service.  His first tour was for six months, against the Cherokee Indians, as Captain, in regiment commanded by Cols Alexander and Phefer, and Major John Davidson, the year he cannot now distinctly recollect.  He then enlisted for twelve months in the regular service under Capt Ezekiel Polk, 1st Lieut. Samuel Watson, 2nd Lieut. William Polk, he thinks, in the year 1777, but was discharged at the expiration of eight months.  He then served a time of three months under General Sumter of South Carolina in the regiment commanded by Col. Thompson of South Carolina and known as Col of the rangers.  He then, in the year 1779 or 1780 entered and served a tour of three months under General Sumter of South Carolina.  He then in the year 1780 served a tour of three & half months as Issuing Commissary under Col. Williams some forty or fifty miles north or northeast of Guilford Courthouse in N. C. (where) we joined General Greene, making in the whole twenty and a half months of which I distinctly remember.  He has no documentary evidence and but one living witness within reach (David Davis whose deposition is herewith appended) that can be obtained.  He was born in Virginia, and was brought to Mecklenburg County as he has been informed by his parents at the age of 3 months, about the year 1750, where he now and has since the revolution resided.  He hereby relinquishes any claim to a pension and annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on a Pension Roll of the agency of any State.  Sworn to & subscribed, the day & year aforesaid

NOTE: Item 9 contains a provision for "white marble" head/foot stones to be purchased and put the "Churchyard at hopewell" for "my wife" myself and "my son Sal L. Wilson" and it is therefore assumed that Hannah (Knox) Wilson, his wife,  and one son, Samuel? L. Wilson, pre-deceased Samuel Sr, and were buried at Hopewell without markers.

I've found no transcriptions that indicate this family is at Hopewell, and others who have visited the cemetery report there are no surviving stones or records indicating any of the three are buried there.
