Annotated Chronological North Carolina Records of Michael Kachelriess (Cocklereece)
Michael Kachelriess is believed to be the son of Nicolaus Kachelriess / Kachelrieß who arrived in America on September 10, 1737 at the Port of Philadelphia, onboard the ship Snow Molly. There is NO PROOF of this relationship; however, there are significant circumstantial facts which point to this possibility. The Kachelriess (actually spelled Kachelrieß) surname is a very RARE German surname. There are fewer than 100 families in present-day Germany, with the majority of these concentrated in the state of Bavaria (Bayern), near Nuremberg. Research indicates this surname has strong roots in the village of Unternesselbach, Mittelfranken (View Village Photos)

Based upon Michael's estimated age, he could have been a toddler when the first Nicolaus arrived in 1737. Michael named his second born son Nicolaus. If this Michael is not the son of the first Nicolaus, he is most certainly near kin!

Annotated Chronological North Carolina Records of
Michael Kachelriess

LAST UPDATED: March 26, 2002

As we follow tax, deed and census records pertaining to Michael, we find a wide variety of Cockelreece spellings or misspellings...listed below are supporting documents found in Granville County/District, Hillsborough District/Orange County, and Guilford County, NC, from the first record in 1769 to the last in 1827.

FIRST RECORD of Michael Cockelreece in North Carolina: Granville County Original Wills NC 1749-1968 NC Archives CR.044.801.17 Mithias Miars: page 1 and page 2

Granville District Will dated March 1, 1770. Mythias Myars (signs by mark) Will probated April Court 1770.

To Grandson Mythias (Cockelreece), son of Tabalt Cockelreece, 100 A. in Granville County on North side of Mill Creek, adjoining Shearmon's land; to wife Mary Myars all the rest of his real and personal estate; to Michael Cockelreece, after death of wife Mary, "this Plantation & mill" and also two Negroes (name Tomas and Jack); to Tabalt Cockelreece 1 Negro (named Nell); and the rest of estate "horses, hogs, sheep, etc. to be equally divided betwixt the two boys, Michael and Tabalt. Exs; "my son Michael Cockelreece and my wife Mary Miers/Myars" Wit Tho's Oakley, Jacob (surname not clear) Nahrun Saunders. Id, page 140. ret. to April Ct. 1770; among other items "one parcel of books" and 3 Negroes. Id p. 146. (Source: Granville County Wills and Deeds 1746-1800, Thomas Owen, 1993, page 59)

No record of Mary Kachelriess is found in NC prior to the Will of Mithias Myars/Miars. It is likely the two Kachelriess/Cocklereece brothers arrived in NC with their mother, Mary, and stepfather, Mathias Miars. It is not known when or how Mier/Miars and his family traveled in NC, but he appears to have arrived on the Osgood in 1750:

1750 - a Matheas Meyer and Hans Georg Meyer, arrive at the Port of Philadelphia on board the ship "Osgood from Rotterdam, last from Cowes" Sept. 29, 1750 - William Wilkie, Captain, 480 passengers. (Source: Pennsylvania German Pioneers, Strassburger, Ralph Beaver, Vol I-II, Norristown, PA, Pennsylvania German Society, 1934, page 446 (both sign names with X mark)

Hans Georg Meyer may have been a younger brother, son or nephew -- since he signed after Matheas; however I have found no other record of him in NC nor elsewhere. Also on this ship: Ludwig Eisele (Ludwig Isley) and Ludwig Readwile (Lewis Riethweil/Redwine). Ludwig Isley Sr's granddaughter, Philipena (daughter of Balser Sr) married Daniel Kachelriess, the grandson of Mary Kachelriess Miar/Mier/Moyer -- widow of Mythias/Matheas Miar/Meyer.

Ludwig Readwile and Matheas Meyer appear in Granville Co and on Shelton Creek about the same time frame, according to these records:

First record of a Mathias Miers/Myars in NC is 10 June 1753 when the following property was surveyed:

1753 - Lord Granville to Mathias Miers - Patent Book 14, # 2474 transaction dated 4/26/1754; Mathias Miers purchases 400 acres in Granville County on both sides of Skelton (Shelton) Creek; Witnesses Jno Haywood, Sher Haywood; SCC Benford Dickens, Griffin Nunary; Wm Churton, Surveyor. Property surveyed 10 June 1753. Granville Grant E.SS.LG - 48-G #171 NC Archives S.108.246 Also, see Map of Granville District circa 1746

1755 - Mathias/Mythias Miers/Myars/Meyers does NOT appear on the 1755 Granville Tax list: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ncgranvi/tax/1755tax.htm

Miers appears as Survey Chain Carrier (SCC) on these deeds:

1757 - Lord Granville to Jacob Slaughter - Patent Book 14, #2710, page 69; transaction dated 9 Nov 1757; 640 acres in the Parish of St. John on both sides of Sheltons Creek, joining Miers line; Witnesses Sherd Haywood; Gideon Macon entered 3 January 1756 surveyed 7 February 1756 SCC: Matthies Miers, Jacob Slutter, Sherd Hayward D Sur -- Plat read "...land surveyd for Abraham Howser.

1760 - Lord Granville to Lydia Lashley - Patent Book 14, #1895, page 435; transaction dated 3 December 1760 - 250 acres in Granville County int he Parish of St. John on both sides of Tar River, joining both sides of Crooked run; Wits: Will Johnson, Charles Allen examed by Tho Jones and Will Hurst survyed 6 February 1756 SCC: Willm Washington, Matthias Miers, Sherd Haywood D Sur...Plat reads: ..."land surveyd for Patrick Lashley"

1768 Lodwick Redwine was on the tax list of Granville Co., NC as shown in tithables taken by Robert Harris. He paid two polls which included son Jacob Redwine shown. The law at the time in NC set the white male poll at ages 16 and upward. Jacob would have reached age 16 in October 1767. (SOURCE: http://www.gate.net/~greg/Peterman.html/osgood1.html)

1769 is EARLIEST RECORD of ANY Cocklereece in NC: 1769 Granville District Tax List : Tabott Cochetrees lists 2 white males over the age of 16 (probably Tabott/Theobald and son, Mythias). This indicates that son, Mythias (who is mentioned as a "grandson" in the following will of Mythias Myars) was born before 1753. Also, since he inherited land in 1770, he had to be 21 at that time, and therefore born NLT 1749. His father Tabolt/Theobald is estimated to have been born NLT 1733.

1769 - First tax listing in NC Mathias Myars appears shortly before he died in March 1770: 1769 MYARS MATHIAS Granville County NC, No Township Listed, NC Early Census Index.

1772 - NC, Granville Co., 22 Feb 1772 Lewis RIETHWEIL (signed in German Ludwig) wrote his will in Granville County naming sons Lewis, Michael, Jacob, John, and daughter Margaret Peeler, wife of Michael Peeler. The youngest son, John, was underage at that time. His wish was that son John was to serve his brother Jacob but for one year, then to be declared free. Obviously, the son named John who was underage in 1772 was not the same Johannes who was baptized 5 May 1737. It is most likely the first son named Johannes had died (perhaps before leaving Germany, or on board ship, or after arrival in America) and the same name was given to another son born later. That was not an unusual custom and happened often. In Mittelberger's diary, he said there were no less than 32 died on the 'Osgood.' (SOURCE: http://www.gate.net/~greg/Peterman.html/osgood1.html)

1777 - NC, 25 Jan 1777 Jacob Reitweil and John Rietwel (sons of Lewis) of Granville County sold 233 acres eastward of Michael Peelers on a branch of SHELTON's Creek, being part of a large survey taken up by William Meadows and adjoining SLAUGHTER. Proved in Aug 1777. Source: Granville Co NC Deed Book L, p 117 (SOURCE: http://www.gate.net/~greg/Peterman.html/osgood1.html)

Mathias Miers settled in the same area in 1754 where Slaughter purchased land in 1757 -- SHELTON CREEK! (Miers line is mentioned and he appears as Survey Chain Carrier)

Michael SENIOR verus Michael JUNIOR:

It is often difficult to determine which Michael is Jr and which is Sr. However, from subsequent Census records we know that the younger Michael was born between 1770 and 1775, so records prior to 1790 are probably Michael SR:

1771 NC Tax Payers List - Granville District, shows Michael Cockaleer Also listed separately is "Tabott" Cockaleer, so this is probably SR. (Source: North Carolina Tax Payers 1679-1790, Radcliff, page 41)

1774 - Michel Cocklerew, Granville Co, NC, November Court 1774 - record of purchases from the estate of Nicholas Holstein. Henry Strater also makes purchases at this sale. (Source: Abstracts of the Wills and estates of Granville County NC, 1746-1808, Book 1, pages 92-96 Zae H. Gwynn, 1973)

1825 - LAST record of Michael at Friedens: Mich. Kachelries, Communicant on 11/6/1825;
(Source: Friedens Records 1802-1853, page 96)

Rebecah apparently died sometime between 1780 (deed record) and 1820 (probably before 1804), since on the 1820 census the oldest female in Michael's household was (b. 1775-1795). This must be the Margaret Kachelriess who first appears by name in Friedens records in 1814 and is named as his widow in the Estate Records of Michael Cocklereece:

1826 Orange County NC Deeds, Book 23, page 495: 24 Feb 1826 - Michael Coclerease to Daniel Coclerease both of Orange Co NC...for consideration of natural love & affection...for the said Daniel...a certain tract or parcel of land lying in said County situate on the waters of Reedy Fork...beginning at a post oak running west with his Brother Michael's line...one hundred acres...Witness: Jos. Michael Cockleriece/Cocklereese ESTATE RECORDS

1827 - Petition for Dower - Margaret Cocklereece - Orange Co Estate (CR. 07.508.1) NC State Archives (Nov Term 1827):

Margaret, wife of Michael Cocklereese, Sr. CHILDREN are:
  • John,
  • Michael,
  • Daniel,
  • Catharine, m. John Lewis/Johannes Ludwig Markert/Marquart (a.k.a. John Lewis Morgin/Morgan)
  • Sarah "Sally", m. Hardy Andrews
  • Henry m. Mary Unknown,
  • Nicholas,
  • Jacob,
  • Mary, m. Christian Isley
  • Elizabeth, m. John Tickle
  • Rebecca, m. James McClain
This document confirms many assumed connections and provides other new information such as:

  1. Establishes a death timeframe for Michael: May 1827

  2. Provides first mention of a Margaret as WIFE of Michael. The wording of the petition for Dower almost seems to indicate these are NOT Margaret's children: "Petition of Margaret Cocklereas humbly shuwth that her husband Michael Cocklereas died intestate and without will on the ___ day of May last past leaving your Petr. his widow the following children, John, Michael, Nicholas, Jacob, Daniel, Henry, Mary married to Christian Isly, Elizabeth married to John Tickle, Rebecca married to James MClain, Catharine married to Lewis Morgan and Sally Cocklereas"

Neither Rebecca nor any other name for Michael's wife ever appears in the Frieden's records. A Margaret Kachelriess does appear separately, but is not identified as Michael's wife (which was customary), so I always assumed she was the first daughter of John. If she is a second wife, she could not be the mother of any of the children listed, except Sally (b. abt 1805). It is unlikely she was one person: Margaret Rebecca or Rebecca Margaret...

  3. Establishes John as a son of Michael.

However, there are still open issues here: I do not understand how John could have been born in Holland in 1760 (as per The National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 39, page 72 (Sept. 1951), under "Settlers in Montgomery Co., Ill., Previous to 1840") -- 23 years AFTER the arrival of the first Nicholas in PA in 1737!

I have never found any primary source document that shows John was FOREIGN born -- only this article, the details of which I believe may be in error. It is possible that John's FATHER Michael was born in Holland, since the ship left from Amsterdam. Since this article contains information on John's son George, I suspect the it was George who gave this information -- and that it was his GRANDFATHER, not father, who was born in Holland.

  4. Establishes others listed above as children of Michael.

  5. Reveals the names, residences, and spouses of two previously unnamed daughters:

    • Catherine and J. Lewis Marquart in "Butler Co, OH, formerly of Davidson Co, NC" and, Sarah and Hardy Andrew in Wythe Co, VA

    • Raises the question of who the Mary Cocklereece was who m. Mathew Allison March 9, 1796 in Orange Co? (likely the daughter of Mathias Cocklereece, son of Theobald) This Mary married Christian Isley, before 1827. Also, this Christian appears to be was the brother of Daniel's wife, Philipina Isley.

    • Provides a clue as to the identity of Susannah Morgin/Morgan (wife of John), who says she was born in Pennsylvania (1850 Iowa Federal Census, Marion County).

John's sister, Catherine Cocklereece, was married to Lewis Morgan prior to the 1827 Dower Petition proceedings. In the 1829 court record, her husband's name is recorded as John L. Marquart.

This Lewis, appears to be the same person who was the bondsman on the 1801 Guilford County marriage bond of Susannah and John Cocklereese -- Lewis Morgin/Morgan, and also apparently the Frieden's Lutheran Minister J. L. Markhart who baptisted several children at the Brick Church about 1807-1808. In addition, on page 124 of the Frieden's church records, a G. Ludwig Markert confirmed four Kachelriess children on Nov 11, 1811.

    • Other court papers filed during the settlement of Michael's estate indicate Henry Cockelreas, one of Michael's sons, died July 4, 1828 in Shelby County, Illinois before Michael's estate was settled. Henry's wife's name is given as Mary (Mary Lu Rhodes?); Jessee Rhoads was appointed to serve with Mary Cocklerease administrator of Henry's affairs. No other family members are named.

Burial place: UNKNOWN

Although one would expect him to be, Michael does not appear to be buried at Friedens -- and least not in a MARKED grave; however, he may be in "Section B" where there are numerous UNMARKED graves. He may also be buried in an unmarked plot on his former property located near Gibsonville, Guilford County, NC.
