I began my research on the Vaughan family in 1975 after graduating from high school. At that time I moved in with my grandmother, Katherine Vaughan Couch. I got what information I could from her, her sister Ruth Vaughan Turner, and her aunt Mary Vaughan Foley. This included the letter from C. W. Day listed below, which contains many references to family members and their locations. From 1975 - 1979 I focused on researching the descendants of Liberty Vaughan, doing my searches at Oregon State University, where I attended college, and at the Oregon Historical Society. In January 1978, while on vacation from school at UMASS - Amherst, I located the book by H. Vaughan Griffin on the Descendants of John Vaughan of Rhode Island at the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. It provided the link from George Vaughan to James Vaughan and beyond. Mr. Griffin send me research notes that provided ideas for further research on the family. In 1979 I got in contact with Harvey J. Vaughan, and from him, Hubert S. Bernards. They provided information on their sides of the Liberty Vaughan family, and together, Hubert and I arranged for the Vaughan family reunion at Champoeg Park on July 29, 1979. Hubert was able to locate descendants of several lines, and I located others, including Kenneth Barrett, who had numerous old letters. The 1979 reunion was attended by representatives from the following Liberty Vaughan branches: Jonathan S., Cyrus, Alexander S., Ruth Weeks, and Mariah Jones. The Miller Vaughan branch had been contacted, but was unable to attend. I subsequently got in contact with the Charles Vaughan branch. For the most part I tabled my Vaughan research until 1994, when I was contacted by several relatives, including descendants of two of Liberty's brothers. I contacted relatives for updates, with the intent of holding another reunion, which was finally arranged by Julie Peterson and held in 1999 at Champoeg Park. I was unable to attend. I have made contact with several of the branches of George Vaughan's descendants, plus a descendant of George's sister, Aunt Mary (Polly) Manley. Sources of my research are listed below. I joined the LDS Church in 1982, and am the source of most of the information on the Liberty Vaughan family in their records. Kenneth Barrett was also a member of the LDS Church.
