"Hello again Cousins!"

As part of my on-going efforts at tracing GOULD family descendants down to 1920 or so, am in search of information for the descendants of Loyal and Margaret Porter (JOHNSON) YOUNG.  Loyal was the son of Robert and Lydia (GOULD) YOUNG.  Have been experiencing difficulty in following this family's descendants in the census thus far, and am in hopes that one or more of you might possibly be able to advise as to where I might need look in order locate any of these families, hopefully so that I might eventually be able to locate as many of the descendants of this family in the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses as might be possible.

From: _History of Butler County Pennsylvania - 1883_, p 178:

REV. LOYAL YOUNG Rev. Loyal YOUNG, D. D., the third pastor of the  Presbyterian Church of Butler, Penn., was born in the town of Charlemont,  Franklin County, Mass., July 1, 1806. His parents were Robert YOUNG,  Esq., and Mrs. Lydia YOUNG (whose maiden name was GOULD). the family  removed from Charlemont, Mass., to French Creek, Harrison Co. (now  Upshur), Va., in the year 1811, LOYAL being five years old.

After receiving a good English education, he entered Jefferson College, when about twenty years of age, or in 1826. He graduated at  Jefferson College in the fall of 1828. After teaching a year a private  family school in Virginia, he entered the Western Theological Seminary  (at Allegheny) and was licensed to preach the Gospel, by the Presbytery  of Ohio, on June 21, 1832. John C. LOWRIE, of Butler (now Dr. LOWRIE, of  New York City), was licensed at the same time.

On the 25th of October, 1832, he was married to Miss Margaret P.  JOHNSTON, daughter of Rev. Robert JOHNSTON, who spent the first years of his ministry in Scrubgrass, Butler Co., Penn., and who was the first  pastor of that church.

LOYAL and Margaret YOUNG had seven sons and one daughter, all of whom, with the parents, are still living , and October 25, 1882, was the golden wedding.

Mr. YOUNG's first sermon in Butler was August 29, 1832. In the  summer of 1833, he preached as a candidate, and was ordained and  installed as pastor of the Presbyterian Chuch od Butler on the 4th day of  December, 1832, by the Presbytery of Allegheny. He continued pastor of the church of Butler nearly thirty-five years, and during that time, as we see in his farewell sermon, delivered  May 10, 1868, preached in the bounds of the congregation 2,920 times,  besides delivering addresses at prayer meetings, funerals and upon other  occasions. Elsewhere he delivered during the same period 1,151 sermons,  making a total of 4,071. He married 203 couples and baptized nearly 700  infants and about seventy adults. During his ministry, nearly 450 persons united with the church and several revivals of marked interest occurred.

Witherspoon Institute owes its existence more largely to Dr. YOUNG than to any other man. The work of calling the convention which brought the school into existence, of preparing the charter, of raising  money and of starting the school, devolved principally upon him. He was  its Principal for a considerable period.

In May, 1868 Dr. YOUNG took charge of the churches of French  Creek in Buckhannon, in West Virginia. Here, at French Creek, he remained eight years, when he was called to the pastorate of the first  Presbyterian Church for Parkersburg, W. Va. Here he remained five years.  He now has charge of the Prebyterian Churches of Winfield, Point Pleasant  and Pleasant Flats, in Putnam and Mason Counties, W. Va. The degree of  Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him by the college of Washington in  1858. Twice he moderated the Synod of Pittsburgh, and once the Synod of  Erie. His Presbytery sent him to the General Assembly seven times. His  health is still excellent and he preaches every Sabbath Day. He wrote a  commentary on the Book of Ecclesiastes, which was publishied by the Presbyterian Board of Publication in the winter of 1865-66. Four of his  sons were soldiers in the Union Army, viz., Robert J., Watson J.,  Torrence F. and James W.

Lyman Young

Submitted by Dorothy Phillips

Lyman was the son of Pascal Paoli Young and Cynthia PHILLIPS YOUNG He was ordained Elder of the French Creek church on the same day as his uncle, Festus on Aug 20, 1853. However, he left the church Jan 16, 1857, and
entered the M.E. Church, and helped to organize French Creek Methodist Church in 1865. The building which housed the new church was built on his land, just west of present Bush Run Road, about where the house of Neil Thacker and his grandmother Grace Lance Young stands.

It was named Mount Stillman, after a son of Lymon's who was an influential part of the young organization. The church was later moved to the village. We are told that the singing in Mount Stillman was something very wonderful and rang out to be heard melodiously for a long distance

Robert Young Family History

Submitted by Dorothy Phillips
From "French Creek Presbyterian Church By Lois Pinnel

Note: His daughter Sophronia Young married Edwin Phillips.

Robert Young was one of the two men first elected to be Elders of the French  Creek Church. Son of Henry Young and Lydia Ross Young. His father had a very  interesting history, which hass been told and retold in the French Creek  writings and publications, as well as by word of mouth and tradition. Of his mother, before her marriage, nothing is known but her name, and that she was living on the island in Mass.

Robert Young's father was a schoolteacher and a man with maritime experience, so when the Revolutionary War began, what is more fitting then that he should be drafted for the protection of the island. His period of service was short because of his profession, and because he had several small children at home. The oldest being Robert Earle Brooks did extensive research about Henry Young, and when time permitted he wrote what he found-which was far less than he hoped.

Note by Dorothy:  Earle Brooks letters will be added here as well. He wrote many letters which I have transcribed about the Phillips .family.

The Young family moved to the mainland of Mass. sometime during Robert's youth and at some place and time, he met and married Lydia Gould, the daughter of Nathan Gould Sr., and Martha Gilbert. He brought his family to
Virginia in 1811, along with the caravan that included his brother-in-law Gilbert Gould.

Robert Young and his wife's first cousin Aaron Gould Sr., were ordained as Elders August 5, 1819. This was about two months before the organization was fully completed. he served as ruling Elder until his death. Robert Young was elected assesorof Lewis County, two tterms I believe. In the course of his duties he was in many homes, and found a woeful lack of Bibles. This he remedied from his own earnings. With help from members of the Bible Society in New York and by members. In his terms of office, he distributed more than four hundred Bibles to families that had crossed the mountains without one. One term he also was elected Sheriff. After some years he resigned the office when it seemed he could not avoid the prosecution of men he knew.

He was a very affectionete family man and father, but was not a hunter. He would not take life....so in the midst of a forest full of game, his family often went hungry for meat. The diet was not totally lacking in protien for his wife Lydia was a very thrifty housewife - she used the milk she took from thier cows to make cheese. Evidently her cellar shelves were a beautiful thing to see. A grand daughter remembers seeing twenty beautiful cheeses on
the shelves.

Robert and Lydia were the parents of many children. More than one of them achieved greatness and one, Lloyd, became a renowned Presbyterian ministerin the state and in PA.

On May 30, 1910, descendants of Robert Young and his wife Lydia Gould Young unveiled a monument to them in the French Creek Cemetery. The monument, draped in a flag, was unveiled by his youngest and only living child,
Sophronia, who had married Edwin PHILLIPS. She was then 88 years of age. Sophronia was born one year after the long pilgrimage from Mass. in 1811.

Robert Young was born Jan 1769, and died Mar 14, 1847.
Lydia Young was born Jul 3 1772 and died Feb 6 1857.

ARTHUR K. PERRY

Submitted by Dorothy Phillips

ARTHUR K. PERRY, president of the Merchants and Miners Bank of Junior and for a number of years active in the civic and business affairs of that community, in the line of public service performed his best work as a specialist with both the State and Federal Departments of Agriculture as an inspector for the protection of forests and orchards. Mr. Perry was born in Meade District of Upshur County, West Virginia, October 24, 1869.

His grandfather, Elias Perry, came from Erie County, New York, and established his home on French Creek in Upshur County, where he spent the rest of his life as a farmer and where he was laid to rest in the community cemetery.

His children were Hubbard, John, Edwin, Elias, Wilbur, Fannie, who mar- ried John Love, and Mrs. Marshall Gould.  Hubbard Perry, father of the banker, was a native of Upshur County, and was one of the early volunteers for the service of the Union in the Civil war. He was in Company E, of the Fourth Regiment of Virginia Cavalry, and while in the service nearly all the war period and in many arduous campaigns he was never wounded or captured.

He was a private soldier, and among other battles he was with Sheridan at Cedar Creek. After the war he returned to the farm and pursued the routine of country life until his death in 1877, at the age of forty-nine. When he went to the polls he cast his vote as a republican, and he was a worshipper in the Presbyterian Church.

Hubbard Perry married Harriet Phillips, daughter of Edwin and Sophronia (Young) Phillips. The Youngs were an old Massachusetts family that settled in Lewis County, Virginia, in that portion now Upshur County. The ancestry of this branch of the family rnns back to an Englishman who was a man of letters and "wrote for the King," probably meaning that he was secretary to King George the first.

Among his children was Henry Young, who lived in Eng land during the latter years of George the second, while Holland and England were at war with France. While in a boat along the coast he was seized and pressed into the English Navy, and for seven years performed his duties with the Royal Navy and finally landed at Martha's Vine- yard, Massachusetts. An educated man, a teacher, he pre pared three times to return to England, but something prevented his going each time, so that providence seemed to have designed to make him an American.

He married Lydia Boss. Their oldest son, Robert Young, was born at Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, and had two broth ers, William and Freeman, and four sisters, Anna, Cynthia, Elizabeth and Margaret.

Robert Young married Lydia Gould. Their children were Paschal, Ann, Anson, Gilbert, Festus, Loyal, Louisa, Sophronia and freeman. The daughter Sophronia was born November 17, 1812, and on April 22, 1830, was married to Edwin Phillips in Upshur County, where they lived out their lives.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Phillips were: Harriet, who became the wife of Hubbard Perry; Abizer; Josephine, who married Adolphus Brooks; Beecher, Marion, Aletha, Wallace, Linn, and May, who became the wife of William O. Phillips.

The children of Hubbard Perry and wife are: Emma, wife of George Talbott and a resident of Elkins; Lucy, who married Jonathan Hathaway, of Buckhannon; Marion, who died in infancy; Orr, of Elkins; Edwin E., of Macedonia, Ohio; Delia, a resident of Pittsburg; Arthur Kirke, the banker; and Grace, who died as Mrs. John Finley.

Elder Samuel Nathan McCann - A Tribute

Submitted by Dorothy Phillips

Eldest son of Squire B McCann & Roxanne Gould McCann and  one of 8 children

Samuel was born 19  Dec 1858 in French Creek, Upshur  Co WV.. He married Elizabeth  Gibbel 29 Jun 1898 while a missionary in Bulsar  India. She too was one of the missionaries there at that time. They had 2 childrem Mary Roxanne, and Henry.  Mary died young, soon after her marriagr to John Wesley Wright.  Henry, after his parents deaths went to New York to live where he married and had a famuly,

His father, Squire McCann was a farmer, but also worked as Notary Public and Surveyor.  As a child, he was taken to Church by his parents. At the age of 15 he was baptized in the Buckhannon River by Elder Elias Auvil at the old Indian Camp Church,   At the age of 18 he was elected to the Ministry, and a year later advanced to the 2nd degree.  He was ordained to the Eldership at Bridgewater in 1894.

His opportunities for education were meager. and consisted of  a few months at the District School each winter, until he was 18  when he attended a Summer Institute and taught his first school the following winter,  For the bext two or three years he attended school in the summer and taught in the winter,  he then went to the Brernerm Normal School   ( now Jauniata College) for 4 sessions. In 1884 he came to Bridgewater as a teacher in the Virginia Normal School. (Now Bridgewater College)..

After 2 years of teaching,  he entered into the Evamfelistic Field and spent about 2 years on the frontiers of Misspiti and Arkansas. He then came back to Bridgewater and was associated there until he was called to the Mission Field to work in India,  Hr had also been a Field Representative for the College.  When called to India, he was attending  the Baptist Theological Seminary in  Louisville, preparing  himself to take charge of the Bible Dept. at Bridgewater, when called.

His ten years in India were full of privations, labor and care.  His ecperiences during the terrible famine  and the plague, reads like a romance novel.  The time for his furlough to return home came just when  the  famine of 1905 came on. He refused to leave his post, and sending his wife and children home for rest. he continued to labor in behalf of the people, until his health became so shattered, that he was finally persuaded upon to take his rest at home.  from the impairment of his health during those years, he never recovered.

During the last eight years of his life, he occupied the Chair of  Biblical Literature and Theology at Bridgewater College. Amidst his busy life and with almost constant suffering,  he still found time to write several books.  His lofty contemplative nature and his intensely Spiritual state of mind fitted him well for this work. Brother McCann made a long and hard fight for his life.  His last summer was spent in North Dakota. He passed away at the home of his brother Henry O. McCann near Sykeston,  on August 24, 1917.

His brother William J McCann accompanied the body of Samuel McCann for his Services and burial in West Virginia.  His passing makes a large void in the Church, in his home, in the school, and in the community,  His life was an inspiration and a blessing. His influence will go on living in the lives of those he inspired, and his teaching will continue to enrich character in the years to come.

History of Education in West Virginia
Prepared under the direction of the State Superintendent of Free Schools
1904, Charleston: The Tribune Printing Company, 1904
pg. 243 - 247

Upshur County
BY W. S. MICK

The greatest stimulus to general education with equal school advantages came with the emigration of the NEW ENGLANDERS  to this country. This emigration began in the year 1801 with Zechariah MORGAN settling on the Buckhannon river near the town of Sago. His story of this newcountry attracted Aaron GOULD, Sr., and his, in turn, brought Robert and Gilbert YOUNG with their families in the year 1811. The years 1814, 1815, 1816 and 1817 brought scores more of these enthusiastic Puritans, who contributed much, immeasurably to the agitation of greater school ad-vantages which was seed sown in good ground and in time bore and is bearing fruit to the glory and honor of Upshur county citizenship.

(Note This includes the PHILLIPS  families)

According to their strict ideas of life they forced an educational opportunity and made their children take and improve it.

Continuous battle was waged between poverty and the illimitable forest on one side and ambition and a hope of better future on the other. The acts of the Virginia Assembly of the late forties, giving partial State support to the schools were due in some measure to the violent agiation of the New Englanders west of the mountains. The Poor Fund converted many dwelling houses and churches into school houses. These required teachers and on February 1, 1847 an act was passed by theGeneral Assembly of Virginia entitled, "An act to incorporate the Male and Female Academy of Buckhannon."

The incorporators by this act purchased a lot in the town of Buckhannon, near where the Episcopalian church now stands on Main street, and built thereon a comfortable one-story school house. Nearly all the students who attended this school became teachers as soon as their preceptor thought them capable. Some became influential in county politics.

So great was the interest in common school work that many new schools were started and the Poor Fund allotted to this county paid but a small part of current expenses. One teacher of this period tells us that he had thirty-five pupils and got only $36 from the Poor Fund. Whenever the Poor Fund was not sufficient to compensate the teacher for his services he could choose either to teach for the Poor Fund only, or had to solicit from the patrons, a varied subscription, which was paid incorn, oats, live stock, or currency as provided by the agreement be-tween teacher and patron at the time of the solicitation.

This brings us to the war of the rebellion.

An act passed December 10, 1863, by the Legislature of West Virginia established free schools throughout the length and breadth of this war-born commonwealth.

J. Loomis GOULD , whose administration covered a period of six years from 1865 to 1871, gives a report for eachyear during his incumbency. His first report shows eighteen schools in
operation, one school house, an enumeration of 2643, and enrollment of 535, an average daily attendance of 384. Number of male teachers, 11; number of female teachers, 8; average male salary, $35 per month, and an average female salary of $18 per month. From the advent of the New Englander into the settlements along the Buckhannon river and the waters of French Creek, Presbyterianism took the lead in progressive educational ideas and affairs. Coming as they did from the highly intellectual atmosphere prevalent in and around Boston, it was but natural that they should take an unusual interest.

No sooner had the clouds of war cleared away than that unconquerable thirst for knowledge in the Puritan's breast began to agitate the advisability and possibility of an academy. At this time as well assince, the Presbyterian faith had more devotees in and around FrenchCreek and it was but natural that that place should be the immediate field of operation.

On the 23rd day of February, 1871, the stronger and more well-to-do families of the French Creek Presbyterian church assembled in their church house and prepared papers asking for the incorporation of the French Creek Institute. The charter was granted March 2, 1871. The purpose of this school as stated in their charter was a male and female Academy, "to train up teachers and promote education generally." The amount subscribed and paid upon the charter was $410 with the privilege of increasing the capital stock to $30,000. The charter does not expire until 1970, although the school has been for many years suspended and the academy building torn down. The first  principal was Dr. Loyal YOUNG  Other principals were Myra BROOKS, J. Loomis GOULD and R. A. Armstrong, now professor of English in the West Virginia University.
