From :Colonial Higdons, and Some of Their Descendants by Lucille Barco Coone, 1916
"John Higdon, ancestor of the Maryland Branch of Higdons, was born in 1657, probably in England. On the 4th of November, 1682, John testified before the Upper House of Maryland, at a trial of Jacob young, an interpreter, who was accused of conspiring with the Indians against the governor. He gave his age, at the time he testified, as twenty-five.
John Higdon had kept Jacob Young imprisoned at his house before the trial, as his jailer. On the 6th of November 1683, the Upper House settled fees to be paid to John Higdon, as keeper for Jacob Young from the 10th of September 1682 to the 10th of October 1683 (440 lbs of tobacco). Also allowed, at the same meeting of the Upper House was 620 lbs of tobacco
"to John Higdon and William Taylor's attendance on him."(From the Archives of Maryland, edited by William Hand Brown)
John Higdon settled first in Old St. Mary's County, Maryland. On 17th April 1693, John Higdon bought a tract of land called Hallyfax Beginning located in Charles County from William Dent for two thousand lbs of tobacco.
John Higdon married before 1692, Millicent (Bowling?), cousin of James Bowling of St. Mary's County. On the 7th of May 1692, James Bowling willed to Millicent, wife of John Higdon of St. Mary's County, a personalty (personal share) of Cavert's Hope - his home plantation. He spoke of her as his cousin, which could mean in addition to the meaning we give it today, step-sister, or niece, in Colonial Days. A definite relationship between James Bowling and Millicent Higdon has not been found.
In February 1694, John Higdon and Alexander Willson were securities for Mr. Richard Hubbard Administrator of Alexander Curry, dec'd of St. Mary's County, in the sum of fifty pounds sterling.
On the 25th March 1720, John Higdon and Benedict Boarman witnessed the will of Henry Miles of Charles County, MD; proved 2 May 1720. On the 27th of August 1722, John witnessed the will of Randolph Garland of Charles County. Other witnesses were Richard Edlen (Edelin) and John Worell.
John died between the 29th of April when he wrote his will and the 22nd of June 1723, when it was proved. His will has been noted as signed with his mark, however, careful examination of the "mark" reveals that he tried to sign his name. His illness probably rendered him too helpless to do so. The factor who wrote the will spelled Millicent's name "Menesenca". John Higdon's will is short and is given in full below:
"In the name of God, Amen, this 29th day og April 1723, I, John Higton, planter, being sick of body but of good and sound and perfect memory thanks be to God for the Same
Item I give and bequeath to my loving son John Higton my great coat.
Item I give and bequeath to my loving son Charles Higdon my jacket.
Item I give and bequeath to my loving son Benjamin Higton my close body coat.
Item I give and bequeath to my loving daughter Mary Simms one cow calf.
Item I give and bequeath to my loving wife Menesence Higton my personal Estate both real and hole whatsoever she paying my debts and funeral charges and doth appoint my loving wife my whole executor during her natural life and what doth remain after her decease to be equally divided between son Thomas Higton and William Higton as witness my hand and seal.
Witnesses: George Dent, John Semes, Elizabeth Duckworth"
On the 13th June 1724, Millesent Higdon Exec, of the Test and Last Will of John Higton "late of Charles CO" dec'd presented her accounts totalling 23.11.9 pounds. John Higdon's total estate seems to be worth 31.12.9 pounds.

Notes for JOHN HIGDON III:
Film Number:

John took Oath of Allegiance to Maryland in 1776. Shown in Maryland census as living in Frederick County, later a part of Montgomery County.
John had another wife before Mary Montgomery, name unknown.
From :Colonial Higdons, and Some of Their Descendants by Lucille Barco Coone, 1916
"John Higdon was born 1716 in Charles CO, MD. he married ca 1736 Wife 1) ????, and Wife 2) ca 1750, Mary Magdalene Montgomery, daughter of Peter Montgomery of Charles CO, MD, and his wife Margitt.
John Higdon was 20 years old when his father died. Bathia Semmes married his father when he was 15.
On the 29th of October 1759, John Higdon, Sr. and John Higdon, Jr. went on bond in Prince George's CO for:
"Richard Harrell, his Admr. Bond in Common form, by John Higdon Sent. his Admr. with John Higdon, Jr. his surety in one hundred pounds sterling."
On August 10, 1760,
"The account of John Higdon, Admr. late of Prince George County. Payments made 61.10.2 pounds sterling August 10, 1760. Then John Higdon made oath .... sworn before me. ??? Scott, Dep Comm, PG CO"
On the 14th of September 1762, John and Mary Magdalene Higdon sold to Abraham Davenport of Prince George CO, for 3000 lbs crop tobacco ... a tract of Land called Munmoth in Charles CO containing 50 acres, signed John (X) Higdon and Mary Magdalene (X) Higdon. In March of 1762, John Higdon, Jr., their son? had sold not only his land but his household furniture and farm animals. (See John 4th generation). Both families disappeared from Charles CO. IN 1768, on Tuesday morning, 7 June 1768, the assembly of MD read the petitions of prisoners languishing in jail at St. Mary's. Among the names was that of John Higdon.
John Higdon, Sr. was found finally in Frederick CO, MD on the 1776 census. White males and white females were separated into two groups on this census, listing each as a separate census, but it takes little imagination to get the households together, both of which were in Lower Potomac Hundred.
Higdon, John, 60 yrs old (born 1716)
John, Jr., 20 yrs (born 1756)
Joseph, 17 yrs (born 1759)
Peter, 11 yrs (born 1765)
Higdon, Mary, 50 yrs. (born 1726)
Susanna, 23 yrs, (born 1753)
Mary, 14 yrs (born 1762)
Katherine, 8 yrs (born 1768)
Also in Frederick CO, at the same time in North West Hundred was:
Higdon, Thomas, 25 yrs. (born 1751)
Rachel, 30 yrs (born 1746)
John, 3, (born 1773)
Margaret, 1, (born 1775)
Negro Bassell, 11 yrs.
I have assumed that John Jr. was the son of John Higdon Sr. Both men were on bond together, both men sold their property and pulled out of Charles CO around the same time. Why then, did John Hidgon, Sr. name another son John, when he already had one. A theory is that mixed in with John Sr's children on the census in Frederick, are one or two children of John Jr's. Instinct says there has been a major tragedy here; debtors prison was a dreadful thing, and many a man spent his time in one because he was kind enough to go on a bond for a friend. Could this have happened to John, Jr.? Or was John, Jr., simply a younger John in the same county, whom the older John took under his wing as he would a son? Could John, Jr. of Charles CO been the son of Charles Higdon of the second generation? An what of Leonard Higdon who moved to Anson CO, NC just about the same time that John Sr. and John Jr. were pulling out of Charles CO. Joseph Higdon, son of John Sr. would later migrate to the same area of NC.
Children of John Sr. and first wife:
i. John Higdon, Jr. born ca 1737 (could be son of Charles Higdon)
ii. Leonard Higdon born ca 1738 (could be son of Charles Higdon)
iii. Charles Higdon born ??? (could be son of Charles Higdon)
Children of John Sr. and Mary Magdalene:
iv. Thomas Higdon, born 1751
v. Susanna Higdon born 1753
vi. John Higdon Jr. ??, born 1756(Could be son of John Jr in jail)
vii. Joseph Higdon born 1759
viii. Mary Higdon born 1762
ix. Peter Higdon born 1765
ix. Katherine Higdon born 1768

Joseph Higdon volunteered for service in the army on June 10, 1781, while he was living in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was a private in Captain William's Maryland Company. He was at the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of Cornwallis.
He volunteered again on October 30, 1781, and served as a private in Captain Le Brumde Bellecour Troop of Horse. In June of 1782, he was promoted to Corporal.
Maryland records show that some men from Maryland, who served in the First Partizan Legion, commanded by Brigadier General Armand, Marquis de la Rouerie, were discharged on November 15, 1783. Included in that list were Joseph Higdon with 1781 as the year that he enlisted, and John Higdon with 1782 as the year he enlisted. I assume John Higdon to be Joseph's brother.
================================================================
In 1784, he moved to North Carolina and lived there for about 13 years. He was married on April 5, 1786, to Margaret Halbrook. She was born on February 17, 1766. On March 28, 1787, Joseph bought 250 acres of land on Carters creek from William and Susannah Holbrook (deed book 13, p.749) He sold 100 acres of the land later to Nathan Sapp of Rowan Co., NC. (see deed book 11, p226) William Halbrook III, Margaret's son by her previous marriage lived with this family through the years; he was born on March 11, 1784, the same year his father William Jr. died.
================================================================
Joseph moved to Tennessee and lived there until 1801. He then moved to Barren County, Kentucky. He applied for a pension on October 16, 1832. He stated that after he was out of the service, he did not think the discharge papers were of any further use to him and that he had given the papers to his little son to play with, and what he did with them he did not know. When Joseph Higdon applied for his pension, he signed his own name to the paper. There is no information, if he could write any more than his signature or not.
He continued to live in Barren County, Kentucky until his death on February 6, 1836. His will is on record and a copy of some of it will follow in this text.
=================================================================
After his death, Margaret remained in Barren County, KY. Her son Joseph Jr. lived either with, or near her and he helped her apply for her pension on April 12, 1839. She made her mark of an X on the application. She was unable to travel the 12 miles to appear in court, so Joseph Jr. appeared in her behalf. Information regarding her pension, Number 65-991-40-50 is recorded on page 17, Barren County, Kentucky Pensioners, section 13. Her pension began March 4, 1831, certificate issued February 29, 1840.
Now on file in the National Archives in Washington, D. C. is the pension file number W. 8935 of Joseph Higdon and his wife, Margaret. He was in the Virginia Militia and the Continental Army. In the file are copies of small pieces of paper with the names of their children and their birth dates. Also, in the file are copies of the pension papers and they are very hard to read because they are hand-written.
