October, 1956
That time we all looked forward to had finally come for our friend Marvin Rigsbee. He had been in Japan many months and, finally, was going home. He was a good friend and we assumed we would never see him again but we were all happy because "going home" was what we all lived for. . . well maybe not everyone wanted to go home. We knew this was what he wanted most so it was what we wanted for him. So that night at the party there were no tears, only smiles and laughter and a good time was had by all. As of this day I have not seen or heard from him. It's been over 40 years. Maybe he will see this someday and contact me.
UPDATE: On January 28, 2002, thanks to the Internet, after 45 years and a few months we found each other and are now corresponding via E Mail.
We originally had planned to have the party at our house [Jim and Ann Carpenter] but decided our house was too small. So it was decided to have it at JoAnn and Phil Hummel's house. Another friend, Don Purnell was supposed to attend, but he forgot and didn't show up.
I'd like to have another party someday but at our ages we won't call it a "Going Away Party."
Following are some snapshots of that momentous occasion, the "Going Away" party for Marvin Rigsbee.
