Picture Description:

Pic 01 We had about a two hour layover in Chicago on the way to Ft. Lewis, Washington.  This was a street scene and I don't remember what the occasion was.  October 15, 1955
Pic 02  Another street scene during our layover in Chicago.
Pic 03  This is the observation car of the train we were riding from New Jersey to Ft. Lewis, Washington.  It was a very pleasant ride and lots of pretty scenery to see out the window.
Pic 04  I took this picture from the moving train near Ringling, Montana.
Pic 05  We finally arrived in Seattle, Washington on Oct. 17, 1955.  This is a street scene in Seattle.
Pic 06  Another Seattle street scene, same day as above.
Pic 07  Here I am aboard the  MSTS General Nelson M. Walker at Seattle, not yet under way.  Sometime toward the last week of October, 1955.  (MSTS stands for Military Sea Transport Service)  See Pic 19 for a picture of the ship and more information.
Pic 08  Finally under way and headed for Japan.  Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, in Oct. 1955.  See Pic 19 for a picture of the ship and more information.
Pic 09  Sunset on the Yellow Sea.  The Yellow Sea is an arm of the Pacific Ocean between the Chinese mainland and the Korean Peninsula.  I don't think we would have been in this area, at all, but as it turned out we had to make a side trip to Korea to let some troops off at Inchon before going back to Japan.  I remember taking this picture and waiting for the sun to get in exactly the right position.  Then I quickly took several shots and bracketed the exposure to be sure and get a good shot.
Pic 10  This is Hardy Barracks in Tokyo, my first stop in Japan.  I stayed here a few days before going on out to the Owada Receiver station on the outskirts of Tokyo.  This picture is labeled Oct. or Nov. 1955. . .  last of October or first week in November.
Pic 11  This is Camp Drake, Japan, just a few miles from my station at Camp Owada.  This is near the Camp Drake PX, taken in December, 1955.
Pic 12  Another picture of Camp Drake near the PX in Dec. 1955.
Pic 13  This is a traffic cop in Tokyo in December, 1955
Pic 14  Here is a group of people, both Japanese and American GI's taking pictures and looking at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.  Dec. 1955.
Pic 15  I don't know who the person on the horse is, in this statue, but was some famous Japanese dignitary from the past.  Still Dec. 1955.
Pic 16  Imperial Palace grounds with lots of people.  Same day as previous pictures, Dec. 1955.
Pic 17  This is an art class in progress with students and teacher near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.  Still Dec. 1955.
Pic 18  Shrine on Tokyo Street, Dec. 1955.
Pic 19  This was the ship where I spent most of the month of October, 1955.  MSTS (Military Sea Transport Service) General Nelson M. Walker.  See pictures 7 and 8 for pictures on board the "Walker."  Thanks to Navsource and Mr. Keith Fannon for the use of this picture on this page.  For more details about this ship, visit this site:  > http://1-22infantry.org/history3/walker.htm<
