MOTHER AND DAUGHTER DIE

Mrs. George Prettyman, Sr., and Mrs. Ortell Lininger Pass Away.

Mrs. George Prettyman, Sr., and Mrs. Ortell Lininger, mother and daughter, respectively, passed away this week within a period of 28 hours.
Either death would have been more than usually regrettable alone, because of the noble characters of the deceased. Coming as they have, the deaths of the two are almost unbearable to the sorrowing relatives.

MRS. PRETTYMAN
Before her marriage, Mrs. Prettyman was Miss Emma Grace DeSilva. She was born at Jaynesville, Iowa County Wisconsin, April 7, 1863 and died February 11, 1918 at the age of 54 years, 10 months and 4 days.
She moved with her parents to Wayne County, Iowa, in 1870 where she grew to womanhood. Coming to Atchison County in 1879 as teacher of the Burr Oak school, she met Mr. Prettyman and they were married July 3, 1881.
Mr. and Mrs. Prettyman resided on their farm, three and one-half miles northeast of Fairfax until August, 1914 when they came to Fairfax to live.
They were the parents of nine children. Four died in infancy. Mrs. Lininger followed her mother in death after a few hours, and four remain: Mrs. Fannie Shinaut of Savannah, MO, Mrs. Edith Greer of Rock Port; George, Jr.; and Miss Hope of Fairfax. She is also survived by her husband and by four brothers and six sisters.
Mrs. Prettyman had been in failing health for about six years, and during that time passed through many periods of critical illness. Her last illness, however, was of but a few days duration.
For a number of years Mrs. Prettyman was an active member of the Christian congregation formerly in existence 3 miles northeast of Fairfax. Following the family's removal to town she became a member of the local Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Prettyman's life offers a beautiful example of practical Christianity, applied in every day life. Loving to those in her own family, a kind and obliging neighbor, a true friend, ever ready to lend a hand in sickness and in death, Mrs. Prettyman held an enviable place in the hearts of all who came in contact with her.
The funeral services were held at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon, February 12, at 2 o'clock. Rev. T. J. Puckett of Marysville, an old friend of the family, officiated at the burial rites. An unusually large enocourse of sorrowing friends and relatives attended. The remains were laid to rest n Pleasant Ridge cemetery.

MRS. LININGER
Mrs. Lininger (nee Edna Grace Prettyman) was born February 19, 1886, and died at her home near Fairfax at the age of 31 years, 11 months and 28 days.
Until her marriage she resided all her life on the Prettyman home place, where she was born.
She became the wife of Ortell Lininger July 12, 1905. Mr. and Mrs. Lininger were the parents of six children. One died in infancy and four sons and a daughter survive their mother. They are: Dale, Kenneth, Loren, Don, and Evelyn Hope. She also leaves her husband together with her father, three sisters and brother, mentioned above.
Mrs. Lininger has been in poor health for the past five years. However, her condition was not considered serious until about three weeks before her death. Since the beginning of her final illness, little hope has been entertained for her recovery.
Mrs. Lininger also possessed a kind and loving disposition, ever ready to help and was a faithful wife and mother.
Especially keen is the sympathy felt for the bereaved husband, not only because of his wife's death, but also because of the burden that will be thrown upon him in caring for the five young children. The he will do his part nobly is certain, however.
Mrs. Lininger's funeral was held at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon, February 13, Rev. T. J. Puckett officiating. The remains were interred in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
