Geo. G. Prettyman Dies At Age of 85

Native of New York State, But Had Lived in Community Since 16 Years Old

George G. Prettyman, one of Fairfax's aged and best known citizens, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. L. Youel, southwest of Fairfax, at 7:15, Tuesday morning, July 3, after a six weeks' illness. He had reached the age of 85 years, two months, and four days.
George Gilbert Prettyman, son of Samuel and Phoebe Prettyman, was born in Albion, New York, April 29, 1860. At the age of 12 years, he moved with his parents to Corning, Missouri, where they resided four years and then purchased and moved to a farm northeast of Fairfax, where Mr. Prettyman spent most of the active years of his life.
On July 3, 1881 Mr. Prettyman was married to Emma Grace DeSilvia of Allerton, Iowa. The established their home on the above mentioned farm, and to them were born nine children. Three daughters and one son died in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Ortel Lininger, died at the age of 33. Surviving children are: Mrs. D. H. Shinaut of King City, Missouri: Mrs. Tony Greer of Tarkio; George Prettyman, Jr. of Independence, Missouri; and Mrs. Milford L. Youel of Fairfax. Besides the children he leaves 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Prettyman moved to Fairfax in 1914 and Mrs. Prettyman died February 11, 1918.
Mr. Prettyman was a member of the Fairfax Presbyterian Church and during his active life was one of its leaders. He was widely known a number of years ago as a breeder of registered Shorthorn cattle, was a leader in Farm Bureau work and took great interest in the development and encouragement of children's farm club work. At one time he was a member of the board of directors of the old Farmers Bank of Fairfax. Of late years he had dealt extensively in a large territory in this section of the state.
Mr. Prettyman was progressively minded and backed many community movements which he felt would benefit Fairfax and community. He was a man of strong convictions and worked untiringly for things he considered right.
Funeral services are to be held at the Fairfax Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p. m., Thursday July 5, conducted by the Rev. S. A. Whysong. The body will lie in state at the church from one until two o'clock.
Pallbearers are: John McConnell, Jess Bowman, Tom Clark, E. F. Youel, John Sly and Earl Davis. Mrs. J. Dan Martin will have charge of the music and Mrs. B. P. Hunter will be in charge of the flowers.
Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery.
