Early Butchers in Northeast Suffolk (Hoxne District and Adjacent)

Jonathan Butcher, [email protected]

 [updated 12 June 2012]

This work in progress covers Butcher/Bocher families in the north-central and north-eastern parts of Suffolk, England up to about 1800.  Some families are covered in separate files.  Information on the Butcher family of Wilby (later of Fressingfield, Metfield, etc.) is provided at (Wilby) and on various Henry Butcher and Mark Butcher families at (Henry/Mark Butcher) .

For maps of the boundaries of Suffolk parishes, link to (Suffolk Parishes).

Records of the family in the early and middle 15th Century are few and scattered:

The earliest Butcher will in the Archdeaconry of Suffolk (covering the eastern half of the county) is that of Nicholas Bocher of Hacheston, 1444 (R1/191).  Hacheston is located south of Framlingham.  The recorded copy of this will exists as a torn fragment in the will book, in a difficult hand, and in Latin.  As far as I have been able to decipher it, the will leaves legacies to wife Issabella, Margaret Copping, Alice Copping, and John Porteryche (i.e., Partridge?) of Woodbridge.  The will does not appear to name any children of the testator.

One Richard Bocher of Nedham Market (apparently Needham Market, joined with Barking, northwest of Ipswich) left a will dated 22 Sep. 1438 and proven 14 Oct. 1438 (Norwich Consistory Court).  He directs that he is to be buried in Barking and names wife Margaret and children Robert, Agnes, John, Thomas, and Elizabeth.  It is possible that the son John could be the one later in Fressingfield – but the location is relatively far from Hoxne District.

The estate of one Agnes Bocher, of Easton Bavents, Suffolk (adjacent to Covehithe on the North Sea) was administered on 11 Sep. 1452 by John Hale Senr. of Downwich and Robt. Sp[ar]hawk of Easton (NCC, Alleyn 12)  Administration on the estate of Alice Reston alias Bocher (probably wife of a Reston and widow of a Bocher) of Dunwich (just south of Easton Bavents) was granted on 6 Feb. 1454/5 to Robt. Sharp and John Bendesham(?) (NCC, Alleyn 21).

At the turning of the 16th century we find three Butcher (Bocher) wills in north-central Suffolk, all made by John Bochers, living in Fressingfield and Laxfield, adjacent parishes just east of Wilby.  Recent attempts to further decipher the very difficult (to me) Latin will of John Bocher, 1504, provide new information on the early generations of this group.

Fressingfield

John Bocher of Fressingfield, probably born around 1430. The will of Agnes Noyse of Fressingfield, made 20 April 1464, names John Bocher of Fressingfield executor (was she Agnes, daughter of Richard Bocher of Needham Market?).  John made a will 20 Aug. 1501, pr. 8 Nov. 1501 (Archdeacon of Suffolk, R4/45 ) (abstract) ).

His children were:

i.                     Bartholomew, probably born around 1460, left a will in Fressingfield in 1505  (abstract) .  He mentions his deceased wife Margaret and current wife Margaret and two children, apparently by his first wife.  There is a case in chancery (PRO C 1/423/15, not examined) that is shown in the index under dates 1515-1518 as “Roger Kent of Horham, gent. vs. Margaret late wife of Bartholomew Bocher.  Detention of deeds relating to messuages and land in Fressingfield, the reversion whereof after defendant’s death complainant has bought of William Bocher, son of the said Bartholomew.”  Issue:

i.                     Agnes, mentioned in her grandfather’s will in 1501.  She died unmarried, leaving a will in Fressingfield 12 Apr. 1510, mentioning her brother William as primary heir (abstract) .

ii.                    William.  It is likely, but not certain that he is the William Bocher who made a will in Brundish (next to Fressingfield) on 8 Oct. 1510, leaving his estate to the church and naming no kin (abstract) .  If so, the deed to Roger Kent must have been made between 1505 and 1510 – as the chancery case would probably confirm.

ii.                    Margaret, mar.        Barber

iii.                  ? Alice, a nun at St. Edmunds.

Laxfield, Framlingham, Gislingham

John Bocher of Laxfield, probably born around 1440/50, was living in Laxfield late in the 15th century.  It seems likely that he could be a nephew of John Bocher of Fressingfield and a brother of William Bocher of Wilby, although this is purely conjecture at this stage.  There is a case in chancery (PRO C 1/67/287 and 362; not examined) with inclusive document dates of 1386-1486 entitled “William Smyth v. William Balston of Harwich and John Boucher or Bocher, feofee to uses: Land in Laxfield and Denyngton sold to complainant by Balston.”  This likely indicates that John was leasing the land around 1486.  A John Bocher Jr. made a will in Laxfeld in 1504, mentioning his parents as living (but not giving their names), and was likely a son.  John Bocher (Sr.) made a will in Laxfeld on 3 Jan. 1510/1, proven in 1512 (Archdeacon of Suffolk R5/325  (abstract), apparently already having conveyed land to his son Hugh.  Children of John Jr. are not mentioned – but this is not conclusive proof that he was not a son (the children might have died, or they might have been considered to have already had their fair share).  Issue:

i?             likely John Jr., probably born around 1470  He made a will in Laxfeld on 8 July 1504, implying that his parents were living (R4/143 (abstract))   This names wife Johan and two young sons, John and Robert.  Issue:

                                                               i.      John, probably born around 1495/1500

ii.      Robert, probably born around 1500/04.  He is of the right age to be the Robert Butcher who died in Covehithe in 1544 (see below), although no connection has been proven.

ii.             Alice, a nun at Flixton.

iii.            Hugh, probably born around 1470/80 and married with at least two sons in 1510.  Hugh Bocher left a will in Laxfield dated 30 Mar 1542 and proven 20 May 1542 (Archdeacon of Suffolk wills, 14:313, (abstract) ).  This mentions various lands in Laxfield, Stradbroke, and Denington.  He left a widow Katherine.  Children:

                                                               i.      John, named in his grandfather’s will, 1510, but apparently died young, as he is not mentioned in his father’s will.

ii.      Nicholas, named in his grandfather’s will, 1510 (see below).

iii.      George, probably born after 1510.  Inherited land in Laxfield and Dennington from his father, but not found in the Laxfield parish register (starts 1579).  Hugh Bocher’s will mentions one child of George:

i.                     Johan, born prior to 1542.

iv.      Johan, mar. John Cowper.  They were living when her brother Nicholas made his will in 1577, “of Balstons.”

iv?           probably Robert, deceased before 1510.  John Sr.’s will leaves a bequest to Robert’s son John, but does not state a relationship.  Alice Bocher of Wingfield, widow, who was perhaps widow of this Robert, left a will in 1523 (Archdeacon of Suffolk 8:247 (abstract)  naming son John Bocher and daughter Johan Clowtyng.

                                                               i.      John, named in the will of John Bocher, 1510, under age 23.  Perhaps the John Butcher who had children baptized in Wingfield (register starts 1538), wife’s name not shown.  Perhaps his widow was the Margery Butcher bur. in Cratfield 18 Oct. 1557:

i.                     ? perhaps William.  The will of Hugh Bocher of Laxfield, 1542, mentions a god child “Willm Bocher John Bochers Son”.  See below under Cratfield.

ii.                    Steven, bp. 8 Nov. 1539, bur. 14 Dec. 1539 Wingfield

iii.                  Jone, bp. 6 Sep. 1540 Wingfield.  Perhaps the Joan Butcher bur. Cratfield 9 Feb. 1554/5.

iv.                  John, bp. 4 Mar. 1541/2.  He might be the John Butcher found in Alburgh, Norf. by 1567 (see Butcher of Shelton).

ii.      ?Johan, mar.          Clowtyng.  A Joan Clowting was buried in Wingfield 10 May 1546.

v.             Margaret, mar. John Helwys.  He is probably John Helewys the elder who left a will in Laxfield in 1519.  John Bocher’s will mentions two children of Margaret:

                        i.      Johan [HELWYS]

                        ii.     William

vi.            probably a daughter who died by 1510 leaving a son Robert Garrard of Bungay.  John’s will leaves him a bequest similar to other heirs, but does not state a relationship.

vii.           perhaps Aves(?) Warde, who was left personal property that was her mother’s (this may be a step-daughter).

Nicholas Bocher of Laxfield was likely born around 1500 (son of Hugh), and is named in his grandfather’s will, 1510.  There is a Nicholas Butcher on the Subsidy Return of 1568 in Laxfelde.  Nicholas Butcher left a will in Laxfield in 1577 (R 26/311 (abstract) ).  The will names wife Elizabeth, sons John and James, and children of son Hugh.  We know, however, that this list is not complete – probably because Nicholas was at an advanced age and had already given property to his other children.  That there were other sons is shown by the will of Nicholas’ son John, which mentions brothers Thomas and Nicholas and appoints the former executor.  Additional evidence is provided by the will of Nicholas’ daughter Katherine, also in 1577.  Elizabeth Butcher was living when her son John made his will in 1589.  She may be the widow Elizabeth Butcher buried in Gisleham (where her son John had moved) on 22 Oct. 1593.  Based on several sources, Nicholas left the following children (most of whom left Laxfield):

i.                     Hugh, b. ca. 1525 (IGI), and mentioned in his grandfather’s will in 1542.  The IGI says that he left a will in Framlingham 10 July 1609 (not found, but there was a Hugh whose estate was administered there in 1610, A6/1/10 and who was bur. Framlingham 28 Sep. 1609 (NBI2)).  “His wife” was bur. there 2 Oct. 1609.  He is not directly named in his father’s will, although some of his children are.  Hugh had children:

i.                     ? Hugh, b. ca. 1557 (IGI), perhaps of Brundish.  The will of Nicholas Butcher does not explicitly name Hugh (Jr.) among the children of his son Hugh Butcher, but does leave a bequest of a “milch cowe” to godson Hugh Butcher.  Margaret wife of Hugh Butcher was bur. Framlingham 10 Aug. 1607.  Perhaps it was this Hugh who died in Framlingham in 1609?  There was also a Hugh Butcher who married in Framlingham on 28 Nov. 1612 Elizabeth Quinsie (SFHS trans.) or Ammise (IGI) and a Hugh Butcher who left a will in Framlingham 9 Dec. 1622, proven 17 Mar. 1622/3 (58/922).  This will appears as “Henry” Butcher in the published transcripts of this volume, but is indexed as “Hugh”.  The will appoints his brother George Butcher executor and leaves bequests to his wife (not named) and four youngest children Susan, Margery, Catherine, and Dorothy Butcher.  Witnesses were Thomas Made and Margery Butcher.  Alice wife of Hugh Butcher was bur. Laxfield 14 Feb. 1594/5.  Widow Elizabeth Butcher and Robt. Pettit were married in Framlingham 21 July 1623.  A Hugh Butcher and wife Alice had in Brundish:

                                                               i.      John, bp. 15 May 1580 Brundish, bur 12 Oct. 1588 Laxfield

ii.      Jone, bp. 24 Nov. 1581 Brundish

iii.      Margaret, bp. 20 Sep. 1584

iv.      Eme, bp. 11 Oct. 1587.  May be the Emme Butcher, singlewoman, bur. in Tannington 4 Nov. 1605.

We then find back in Laxfield and in Framlingham more children of a Hugh Butcher (the later ones by wife Margaret)

                                                             v.      Alice, daughter of “hewgghe”, bp. 19 Nov. 1587 Laxfield.  There was an Alice Butcher who mar. in Framlingham 4 Jul 1599 Edward Hutton – probably too early to be this Alice unless her baptism was late.

vi.      Margaret, daughter of Hugh Butcher and wife, bp. 22 Dec. 1588 Framlingham

vii.      George, “son of hewghe” [mother not shown], bp. 31 May 1590 Laxfield.  Perhaps he is the George Butcher who appears on the 1638 list of Able Men of Suffolk in Sibton (next to Peasenhall in Blything Hundred).  If so, he is the ancestor of the Henry Butcher family of Metfield (see Henry and Mark Butcher Families ).

viii.      [illegible], daughter of Hugh and Margaret, bp. 5 Nov. 1598 Framlingham

ix.      Katheryne, bp. 1 Mar. 1600 Framlingham [father shown as “Henry?” on FHS transcript]

                                                             x.      Dorothey, d. Hugh & Margaret, bp. 19 Jan. 1602/3

xi.      Susan, bp. 13 Apr. 1606

ii.                    John, named in his grandfather Nicholas Butcher’s will, 1577.  May be the John Butcher bur. Framlingham 16 July 1639.  In Brundish we find a son of John Butcher in 1583. It seems likely that John then married in Framlingham on 20 Oct. 1590 Anne Spalding and had children there.  There was also a Susan, wife of John Butcher, bur. Framlingham 15 May 1610.

                                                               i.      John, bp. 14 Apr. 1583 Brundish, “born in Dinington” (see below).

ii.      Thomas, bp. 31 Oct. 1591 Framlingham, “son of John Butcher”

iii.      Joane, bp. 25 Dec. 1595

iv.      Susan, bp. 15 June 1598

                                                             v.      Elizabeth, bp. 17 Jan. 1603/4, daughter of John and Anne Butcher.  Likely the Elizabeth Butcher, single, who married in Framlingham 27 May 1623 Peter Gooding.

vi.      Grace, bur. Framlingham 20 June 1605.

iii.                  Johane, probably the Johan Bucher who mar. in Framlingham 20 Apr. 1593 Frauncis Wade.

iv.                  perhaps Robert Bucher, bur. 10 Dec. 1561 or 1562 Framlingham

v.                   George, b. ca. 1573? (IGI – probably born earlier) and named in Nicholas Butcher’s will (1577), buried in Gislingham, Suff. 23 Jul. 1641.  He made a will in Gislingham on 8 May 1641, probated 6 Aug. 1641 (Archdeacon of Sudbury R2/58/275, (abstract)), which mentions various properties in Framlingham.  George named only his two eldest surviving sons (George and Peter) in his will, but the rest of his children are named in the will of his widow, to whom he gave power to dispose his properties.  George Butcher and wife Margerie (surname not given in the register) were married in Framlingham 29 Sep. 1598.  Margery Butcher made a will in Gislingham on 18 Feb. 1644/5, probated 16 April 1645, mentioning the will of her deceased husband George and naming all their surviving children (Archdeacon of Sudbury R2/59/179 (abstract)).  George and Margerie had:

                                                               i.      George, bp. 15 Aug. 1599 Dallinghoo, Suff.

ii.      George, bp. 10 June 1604 Framlingham.  On the lists of Able Men of Suffolk in Framlingham, 1638.  Named in both parents wills and in the will of his brother James, 1645.  May be the George bur. in Framlingham 13 Mar. 1684/5.  He seems to have had a wife Alice and children born in Framlingham.  Alice wife of George Butcher was bur. Framlingham 5 Dec. 1642.  Issue:

i.                     Lydia, bp. 20 Mar. 1629/30 Framlinghan, mentioned in her grandmother’s will, 1645.

ii.                    infant child, bur. Framlingham 13 Oct. 1631

iii.                  Marie, bp. 23 Apr. 1633 Framlingham.  Probably the Marie Butcher who mar. Framlingham 9 Dec. 1658 [Benja]min Ladd

iv.                  Sarah, bp. 19 Apr. 1635

v.                   John, bp. 29 Jan. 1636/7, bur. 1 Jan. 1642/3

vi.                  Robert, bp. 4 Aug, 1639

vii.                Martha, bp. 18 Apr. 1641, mentioned in her grandmother’s will, 1645.

viii.               Alice, bur. 5 Dec. 1642

iii.      Peter, c. 1607.  Mentioned as living in Framlingham in both his parents’ wills; he and his sons inherited lands there.  Likely the Peter Butcher bur. 21 Apr. 1647 Framlingham.  According to the IGI, there is a marriage license for Peter Butcher and Ann Roe, Cretingham, 10 Oct., 1632 (not noted on LDS transcript).  Issue by Anne:

i.                     James, bp. 4 Aug. 1633 Framlingham, mentioned in the will of his grandmother and that of his uncle James in 1645.

ii.                    Peter, bp. 14 Dec. 1634, mentioned in the will of his grandmother in 1645.  Said to have moved to Ipswich (Ancestry.com Millenium file) and left a will dated 12 July 1697.  The IGI shows one child by wife Elizabeth

i.                     Elizabeth, bp. 17 Feb 1667 Ipswich, mar. 12 Sep. 1692 John Goodwin.

iii.                  Anne, bp. 30 Sep. 1639

iv.      Hugh, bp. Framlingham 30 Apr. 1620, son of George and Margery, inherited land in Framlingham in the will of his mother, 1645.  Not identified thereafter.

                                                             v.      James, inherited the residue of his mother’s property in Gislingham and was her executor.  On the 1638 list of Able Men of Suffolk in Gislingham.  He was bur. 16 Mar. 1645/6, single, leaving a will in Gislingham dated 16 Nov. 1645 (Arch. Sudbury R2/59/263).

vi.      Grace, bp. Framlingham 20 Sep. 1601.  In 1645 she was married to William Burrows, with children Martha, James, and Lydia.

vii.      Margaret, bp. 27 Oct. 1611 Easton, Suff., unmarried in 1645.  She was executrix of her brother James

vi.                  Robert, named in Nicholas Butcher’s will (1577).  He would seem to be the Robert Butcher who was witness to George Butcher’s will in Gislingham, 1641, and made a will in Gislingham on 23 Jan. 1643/4, probated 15 May 1644 (abstract).  This will names wife Mary, but no children.  Robert made bequests to a number of kin, including (1) Robert son of George Butcher of Framlingham (see above), (2) Thomas Ladd, (3) John Butcher of Framlingham, who was executor, and his children Mary, Martha, Susan, and Elizabeth (see below), and (4) James Butcher of Gislingham (see above).

ii.                    John, ca. 1527, mentioned in his grandfather’s will (1542) and of Laxfield in 1577 when he is named in the wills of his father and sister.  He was executor of his father’s will and received under that will rights to copyhold land in Fressingfield in addition to freehold land he had already received by deed.  Buried Gisleham, Suff. 22 May 1589 [note that this is Gislaham or Gisleham on the east coast, not Gislingham where several of his relatives moved].  Made a will in Gisleham on 20 May 31 Eliz. I [1589], proven 17 Aug. 1589 (Archdeacon of Suff wills 32:374) (abstract).  The will suggest that he had recently moved to Gisleham from Laxfield.  The will mentions land called Sheltons in Laxfield and Stradbroke received by deed of his father, Nicholas Bocher.  John’s wife Agnes (buried 25 May 1589, not the mother of his children) also made a will in May 1589, probated 21 Mar. 1589/90 (32:239).  She was bur. in Gisleham 25 May 1589.  John left children who were all minors in 1589, but mentioned in their grandfather Nicholas’ will in 1577 (thus born between 1568 and 1577):

                                                               i.      ? perhaps Faithe, dau. of John Bocher, bur. S. Elmham St. James 15 Oct. 1564.

ii.      Mary, probably born about 1568

iii.      Joane, bp. Gisleham 15 Jan. 1569/70.  Likely the Jane Butcher who mar. Nicholas Tredeston in Gisleham 22 Nov. 1591 (FHL Pilot Search)

iv.      Elizabeth, bp. Gisleham 28 Mar. 1572.  Probably the Elizabeth Butcher bur. Giseleham 2 Oct. 1593 (FHL Pilot Search)

                                                             v.      Thomas, bp. Gisleham 25 Mar. 1576, inherited the land in Laxfield and Stradbroke.

iii.                  Johane, ca. 1531, mentioned in her grandfather’s will in 1542, unmarried in 1577.

iv.                  James, ca. 1533 [acc to IGI] – but quite possibly a decade or so later.  Received from his father’s will (1577) rights to land then in the occupation of his aunt Johane Cowper.  “The wife of James Butcher” was buried in Laxfield 29 Mar. 1621 and James Butcher was buried there 20 Nov. 1621.  Might be the James Butcher who left a will in Brundish dated 17 Mar. 1620/1, proven 10 Dec. 1621, leaving his property to his daughter Frances With (Wyeth) and her children Mary, Frances, John, and Arthur With.  The will was witnessed by Robert Downing, Edmond Page, William Mayhew and Robert Nunne and also mentions his brother-in-law Edmond Gilbert.

i.                     John, bur. 3 May 1604 Laxfield

ii.                    Frances, mar. [Francis?] Wyeth

v.                   Nicholas, ca. 1537. Mentioned in the will of his brother John in 1589, but no further record identified.

vi.                  Dorothy, c. 1538

vii.                Thomas, c. 1539 (IGI) – more likely 1540/50. Mentioned in the will of his brother John in 1589 (see below).

viii.               Katherine, mentioned in her grandfather’s will, 1542.  Single, made a will in Laxfield 27 Oct. 1577. pr. 8 Feb. 1578/9 (Archd. Suff wills, 27:134).  This refers to her late father Nicholas, mother Elizabeth, brother John, “my brothers and sisters”, sister Dorothy, sister Johane, Johane the daughter of Hugh Bocher, and Mary Bocher.

Thomas Butcher of Laxfield (likely the son of Nicholas above), was likely born around 1540/50.  A yeoman, he made a will in Laxfield on 1 June 1619 (Archdeacon of Suffolk wills, 1619, f87 (abstract) ).  Thomas Butcher, yeoman, was buried in Laxfield 1 July 1619.  Thomas’ will names his wife Elizabeth, son John, brother-in-law Robert Peyton, son-in-law Edward Miles, daughter Elizabeth Luff (mar. Parham 6 Feb 1613 William Luff), and grandchild Johane Butcher.  His son John may have married in Parham (next to Framlingham) in 1610.  Thomas’ widow Elizabeth Butcher made a will in Pulham, Norfolk 28 July 1619, proven 21 Dec. 1619 (abstract) . In addition to her Butcher children, she mentions son-in-law John Artiss and brother Robert Coiton(?).

i.                     Joane, bp. Laxfield 23 Oct. 1580.  Mar. Laxfield 22 Apr. 1605 Edward Miles.  They seem to have lived in Badingham and then Peasenhall, where a Joane Miles was buried in 1640 and an Edward in 1639 (NBI2).

                                                               i.      Margaret [MILES], bp. Badingham 6 Aug. 1609

ii.      Thomas, bp. Badingham 3 May 1612

ii.                    John, bp. Laxfield 20 May 1583, mar. Parham 12 Aug. 1610 “Francis Lvmny” or Lumm.  His widow may be the “Vidua Butcher” bur. in Laxfield 2 May 1641.  He perhaps was the father of:

                                                               i.      Joane, mentioned in Thomas Butcher’s will, 1619 as a grandchild (but perhaps a child of another, deceased son of Thomas?)..

ii.      ? perhaps Thomas Butcher, son of John and Mary, bp. 21 Mar. 1617/8 Peasenhall, bur. there 10 Apr. 1619

iii.      Edward, “son of John Butcher”, bp. Laxfield 17 Sep. 1621.  There was an Edward Butcher, saddler, who left a nuncupative will in Woodbridge in 1694.

iii.                  Margaret, bp. Laxfield 19 Oct. 1589

iv.                  Elizabeth, bp. 5 Mar. 1591/2, mar. Parham 6 Feb. 1613 William Luff.  She is likely the Elizabeth Luffe bur. Badingham 13 May 1629.  William, who seems to have remarried, was bur. there 4 June 1645.  Children included:

                                                               i.      Thomas [LUFF], bp. 26 May 1614 Peasenhall, bur. 7 Oct. 1614

ii.      Thomasin, bp. 12 Apr. 1616/7 Badingham.  May be the Thomasin Luffe, single woman, bur. Badingham 23 July 1638 or the Thomasin Luff who mar. there in June 1635 Robt. Aliotte of Kellshall.

iii.      Elizabeth, bp. 7 Apr. 1617 Badingham

iv.      Marie, bp. 22 Apr. 1619

                                                             v.      Mathew (Martha?), daughter, bp. 25 Nov. 1621

vi.      ?probably Thomas Luffe, bp. 23 Oct. 1623 Badingham (parents not shown)

vii.      ? probably William, bp. 23 June 1626 (parents not shown).

After 1621, most of the family seem to have left Laxfield, but a few later returned.

A John Butcher of Ubbeston (adjacent to Laxfield) is likely from this branch of the family.  He married in Heveningham (one parish further east) on 28 Sep. 1696 Elizabeth Roocke.  They had children in Ubbeston through 1705, but then appear to have moved somewhere else (no deaths recorded in Ubbeston).  There was a John Butcher bur. Yoxford, Suff. 7 Dec. 1722 who could be him.  Issue:

i.                     Sarah, bp. 11 Dec. 1698 Ubbeston

ii.                    John, bp. 27 Nov. 1700, bur. 22 Oct. 1701 (“as appears by affidavit of Eliz. Woodbridge.”)

iii.                  Elizabeth, bp. 30 Aug. 1702

iv.                  Thomas, bp. 8 Apr. 1705

v.                   Martha, bp. 7 July 1706.  A Martha Butcher was bur. in Ubbeston 3 Nov. 1707, with neither age nor parents indicated.  On the other hand, this might be the Martha Butcher who mar. James Harrison in Kettleburgh, 1727

vi.                  ? probably John, son of John Butcher, bp. Heveningham 13 July 1711

This John Butcher possibly later moved to Monk Soham and perhaps then to Worlingworth, although the identification is uncertain.  An Elizabeth Butcher was bur. in Worlingworth 22 Feb. 1719.  One child is found in the register for Monk Soham (which does not commence until 1712)[1]:

vii.           Thomas, bp. 13 Mar. 1716 Monk Soham.  Probably the Thomas Butcher bur. in Worlingworth on 26 July 1769, aged 54.  Thomas Butcher of Worlingworth, single,  married in Ubbeston on 16 Jan. 1739/40 Elizabeth Follard of Laxfield.  He left a will in Worlingworth dated 8 July 1769, proven 6 July 1772 (Archdeacon of Suffolk Wills, 1772, f. 53), mentioning his wife, son Thomas, and daughter Elizabeth.  Son Thomas received a mill in Stoke Ash (near Yaxley in Hartismere Dist.) and the house in Worlingworth.  His wife was apparently Elizabeth Butcher, bur. in Worlingworth on 12 Jan. 1793, aged 81.  They had:

i.                     Mary, bp. 24 Feb. 1739/40 Laxfield , apparently died before her father.  Probably the Mary Butcher bur. Worlingworth 25 Mar. 1748.

ii.                    Thomas, bp. 12 Mar. 1741 Worlingworth.  He is probably the Thomas Butcher who married in Laxfield 24 Oct. 1763 Mary Green (IGI).  Likely the Thomas Butcher bur. Wickham Market, Suff. 15 Apr. 1810, aged 69.  He left a will dated 28 Mar. 1807 (Archdeacon of Suffolk, 38:77) and a widow Mary, who was bur. Wickham Market 24 Dec. 1814, aged 72 (NBI2).

                                                                           i.      John, received lands in Wickham Market from his father; had children John and Thomas when their grandfather made his will in 1807

ii.      Henry, received lands in Wickham Market

iii.      William, inherited a brick kiln from his father

iv.      Thomas, likely mar. Elizabeth Hart, who was bur. Kettleburgh 1 Apr. 1826 aged 63.

                                                                         v.      Mary, born ca. 1767/8, bur. 21 Mar. 1793 Wickham Market, aged 23, mar. there on 31 Aug. 1790 James Churchyard and left a son, also named James, mentioned in Thomas Butcher’s will (1807).

iii.            Elizabeth, bp. 23 Sep. 1750 Worlingworth

A Robert Butcher was bur. Laxfield Mar. 6, 1728/9.  Perhaps he is the same as the Robert, son of Jno. Butcher of “Sipton” who was bound apprentice to Jno Stock of “Pesnhall”, blacksmith on June 1, 1723 (Register of Duties Paid for Apprentice Indentures, 1710-1811, on Ancestry.com).

Thomas Butcher of Cretingham by wife Martha had nine children in Cretingham between 1697 and 1711 (IGI).  Thomas Butcher was bur. Cretingham 9 Jan. 1731/2 and Martha on 18 Feb. 1731/2.  Thomas’ estate was administered in the Court of the Archdeacon of Suffolk (1731-33, f. 19).  The estate of Martha Butcher was administered in Cretingham soon after (1731-3, f. 94).

i.                     Mary, bp. 12 Sep. 1697 Cretingham

ii.                    Martha, bp. 12 Sep. 1697 (twin)

iii.                  Mary, bp. 11 Dec. 1698 (Bishops Trs.,), bur. 19 Jan. 1698/9

iv.                  John, bp. 30 Dec. 1699. Mar. Cretingham 23 June 1728 Ann Hollis and had:

i.                     John, bp. 11 Oct. 1730 Cretingham

ii.                    Ann, bp. 24 Sep. 1732

iii.                  Martha, bp. 9 Nov. 1735 (IGI and Bishops Transcripts)

iv.                  Mary, bp. 14 Aug. 1737

v.                   Mary, bp, 18 Feb. 1701, mar. Cretingham 24 Oct. 1727 Thomas Hollis (Bps. Trs.)

vi.                  Thomas, bp. 29 Aug. 1703

vii.                Sarah, bp. 16 Sep. 1705, mar. Cretingham 7 Oct. 1731 John Jennings (Bps. Trs.)

viii.               Alice, bp. 29 Aug. 1707 [IGI]; transcript shows date 21 Mar. 1707/8.

ix.                  Hannah, bp. 12 Feb. 1709, mar. Cretingham 22 July 1733 William Beaumont (Bps. Trs.).

x.                   Lydia, bp. 24 Feb. 1711

Another Thomas Butcher married in Yoxford on 11 Nov. 1684 Elizabeth Watling (both single).  They later moved to Kelsale.  Elizabeth Butcher of Kelsale was bur. in Yoxford 18 Sep. 1718, and Thomas Butcher of Kelsale was bur. in Yoxford 21 Sep. 1719.  Issue:

                i.              Elizabeth, bp. 14 Sep. 1685 Yoxford, mar. there 28 Feb. 1713/4 Thomas Mowser.

ii.             Ann, bp. 15 July 1688

iii.            Mary, bp. 17 May 1690

iv.            John, bp. 2 Oct. 1693 Yoxford (see below)

                v.             Thomas, bp. 20 Oct. 1700 Kelsale (see below)

Brothers John and Thomas Butcher appear to be sons of the latter of the two Thomas Butchers immediately above:

John Butcher of Laxfield is likely the one bp. in Yoxford in 1693 (see above) – although there was a John Butcher bur. Yoxford 7 Dec. 1722 (Bishop’s Transcripts).  He seems to be the John Butcher, widower who married in Marlesford on 4 Jan. 1729/30 Elizabeth Martin (Bps. Trs.; the marriage is also recorded in Kettleburgh).  Elizabeth, wife of John Butcher was bur. in Laxfield 18 Apr. 1738.  He made a will in Laxfield 24 May 1762, pr. 25 June 1762 (Archdeacon of Suffolk, 34:54), naming daughter Sarah, brother Thomas, and the latter’s son Thomas (of age), who were executors.  Witnesses were William Philpot, John Randall, and Richd. Bonwell.  John Butcher “from Laxfield” was buried in Worlingworth 31 May 1762.  John and wife Elizabeth had:

i.                     Sarah, bp. 7 Aug. 1730 Laxfield

ii.                    Miles, bp. 24 May 1732, apparently died young

Thomas Butcher, brother of the previous, is likely the one bp. in Kelsale 1700.  There was a Thomas Butcher of Wissett on whose estate administration was granted to widow Mary Butcher on 27 Aug. 1765 with Thomas Butcher of Badingham, wheelwright, as bondsman (Archdeacon of Suffolk).  This may be the same person as Thomas Butcher of Yoxford who married in Stradbroke by license on 2 Dec. 1726 Mary Cooper of Ipswich.  His burial may be that of the “Mr. Butcher” in Wissett, 26 June 1765.  He appears to have had:

i.                     Thomas, born before 1741 and of age in 1762.  Probably the Thomas son of Thomas and Mary bp, Kelsale (adj. to Yoxford) 26 Aug. 1727 (IGI).  Perhaps of Badingham in 1765.  He could be the Thomas Butcher, aged 81, bur. Benhall 10 Mar. 1806.

ii.                    ? perhaps Mary, mar. in Wissett 27 Feb. 1749 John White of Broome

This Thomas and Mary may also have resided for a time in Frostenden, Suff. where we find according to the IGI (the latter two also shown in the FFHS online database):

·                     Maria Butcher, bp. 26 Mar. 1729 (parents not shown) (Perhaps same as Mary above)

·                     Elizabeth, bp. 6 Feb. 1731 (dau. Thomas and Mary)

·                     George, bp. 28 Apr. 1732 (son Thomas and Mary)

William, son of Mary Butcher, was bp. Laxfield 27 Dec. 1737.  He may be the William Butcher who married Martha Boast in Weybread, Suff. 10 Oct. 1768 (George Reed and Mary Boocher witnesses).  The Weybread parish registers at SRO contain an overseer’s removal order for William Butcher and wife Martha from Weybread to Leiston.  He may then be the William Butcher, aged 73, bur. in Dunwich (next to Leiston) 27 Nov. 1811.  Martha Butcher was bur. there 6 May 1807.  Issue:

i.                     William, bp. 9 July 1769 Wingfield

John Butcher of Framlingham might be the John, bp. Brundish 1583, son of John Butcher (see above).  He had a wife Susan who is perhaps the Susan Butcher bur. Framlingham 15 May 1610.  He might be the John Butcher bur. Framlingham 16 July 1639.  Issue

i.                     John, son of John and Susan, bp. Framlingham 22 Oct. 1606.

ii.                    John, son of John and “Susa” Butcher, bp. Parham 13 Apr. 1610.  One John, s. of John Butcher was bur. Parham 13 Apr. 1610 – but which one is unclear (see below)

John Butcher of Framlingham, perhaps son of the previous??, was kinsman and executor of Robert Butcher of Gislingham in 1644 (see above), who was likely his great uncle.  Robert’s will also mentions Susan Gunnell “said John Butchers sisters daughter”, who has not otherwise been identified.  John appears on the 1638 list of Able Men of Suffolk in Framlingham.  Married first in Parham 26 Jan. 1631/2 Mary Hamon or Hamond.  Marie wife of John Butcher was bur. Framlingham 22 Feb. 1653/4.  Perhaps a second marriage of this John is shown by a record in Tannington on 11 Aug. 1659 for “John Bucher and Elizabeth Watling both of the Towne of fframlingham.”  A John Butcher was bur. Framlingham 30 Sep. 1680, and an Elizabeth Butcher 5 Apr. 1683.  By first wife Mary he had children:

i.                     Mary, bp. 5 June 1634 Framlingham, bur. 21 July 1634

ii.                    Mary, bp. Gislingham 9 Feb. 1635 (IGI), mentioned in Robert Butcher’s will, 1644.  Probably the Marie Bucher bur. Framlingham 14 Aug. 1658.

iii.                  Martha, bp. Gislingham 11 Mar. 1637 (IGI) mentioned in Robert Butcher’s will, 1644.

iv.                  Susan, bp. Framlingham 21 June 1641, mentioned in Robert Butcher’s will, 1644.  Probably the Susan bur. 8 Nov. 1653.

v.                   Elizabeth, bp. 28 Aug. 1642, mentioned in Robert Butcher’s will, 1644.

vi.                  Robert, bp. 11 Apr. 1644 Framlingham (see below).  Perhaps he is the same as Robt. son of Robt. Butcher bp. Bungay Holy Trinity 14 Feb. 1644/5.

vii.                John, bp. 11 Feb. 1645 Gislingham

viii.               James, bp. 18 Sep. 1646 Framlingham, probably the James bur. 8 June 1647

ix.                  Samuel, bp. 5 Dec. 1648.  A Samuel Butcher and wife Frances had children bp. in Benhall, Suff. in 1677 and Rendham, Suff. in 1680.  There was a Samuel Butcher bur. Blaxhall 8 Dec. 1682, his estate being administered in the court of the Archdeacon of Suffolk.  There were later Butchers in Blaxhall (register not yet searched).

                                                               i.      Susanna, bp. Benhall 25 Mar. 1677; perhaps the Susan Butcher bur. Blaxhall 24 Mar. 1683 (NBI2)

ii.      Samuel, bp. Rendham 16 Jan. 1680

Robert Butcher of Framlingham was likely born around 1640/45, and is probably the son of John previous, bp. 1644 – or else the son of George Butcher Jr. of Framlingham (see above).  He was married to a wife Ann by 1671.  Probably moved to or also held land in adjacent Dennington.   There is apparently a Lease Agreement, Ref, FC112/L2/3 V1, 29 Oct. 1695, between James Revet, of Dennington Gent and Thomas Reve of Dennington, carpenter, feoffees of the town lands and William Branch, of Brundish, butcher, for lease of farm in the occupation of Robert Butcher, John Dolling junior and John Bicker (http://www.dorl.freeserve.co.uk/UK_Suffolk/Suffolk_D-E.htm).   Ann Butcher, wife of Robert Butcher of Dennington, was buried in Framlingham 10 Sept. 1697.  A Robert Butcher, widower, married in Badingham (adjoins Laxfield to the south) on 9 May 1708 Ann Warner, single.  The marriage record says that both were of Badingham, but I do not find him further there.  He may be the Robert Butcher buried in Framlingham 10 April 1722 intestate, administration of his estate being handled in the Court of the Archdeacon of Suffolk.  Robert and wife Ann had (IGI):

i.                     James, bp. 17 Jan. 1669/70 Framlingham

ii.                    James, bp. 18 Jan. 1670/1 Framlingham (see below)

iii.                  John, bp. 18 Oct. 1672 (see below)

iv.                  Samuel, bp. 22 Jan. 1673/4

v.                   Thomas, bp. 4 June 1675.  He could be the Thomas Butcher bur. Metfield 16 Dec. 1720.  Perhaps the Thomas Butcher who by wife Mary had:

i.                     Dennis, bp. 29 Jan. 1706 Dennington.  Dennis butcher, son of Tho. Butcher of Stratford, Suff., yeoman, was apprenticed to Roger Clayton of Yoxford, grocer on 20 Nov. 1718 (Register of Duties Paid for Apprentice Indentures, 1710-1811).  Dennis Butcher and Catherine Elsden, both single and of Yoxford, were mar. in Yoxford 28 Sep. 1727.  Dennis Butcher, married man, aged 32, was bur. Yoxford 23 Sep. 1738.  Widow Catherine Butcher of Yoxford mar. in Thorington, Suff. by lic. on 2 Apr. 1741 John Moore, widower, of Halesworth.  One child found in the Yoxford register:

i.                     Elizabeth, bp. 28 Oct. 1728 Yoxford

He may also be the Thomas Butcher “of Dennington” who fathered an illegitimate daughter Martha by Ales Brown, bp. Badingham 6 Oct. 1711.

vi.                  Benjamin, bp. 18 June 1676.  There was a Benjamin Butcher, farmer, bur. 10 Jan. 1700/01 Framlingham St. Michael.  The one bp. 1677 may be the Benjamin Butcher who married Susan Raffe of Bruisyard in Dennington on 18 Dec. 1700.  He may also be the Benjamin Butcher of Homersfield who married in Halesworth, Suff. on 10 Oct. 1706 Judith Gyet.  That Benjamin was buried in South Elmham St. Peter on 12 Apr. 1736; Judith was bur. there 3 June 1748.  Their children included:

i.                     Benjamin, bp. 5 July 1711 S. Elmham St. Cross. There is an Overseers Removal Order for Benjamin Butcher and Judith his wife from Wilby to Metfield in the Suffolk RO (RC 88/G5/18), dated 29 Jan. 1776 (these were orders sending the poor back to the parish from whence they came to avoid responsibility for support).

ii.                    Edward (infant), bur. 21 Mar. 1713 S. Elmham St. Peter

iii.                  Elizabeth, bur. 15 Oct. 1715 S. Elmham St. Peter

iv.                  Mary, bp. 25 Feb. 1718, bur. 15 Apr. 1718 St. Elmham St. Peter

vii.                Joseph, bp. 19 July 1678

James Butcher, son of Robert Butcher of Framlingham above, was bp. 18 Jan. 1670/1.   There are three possible identifications for him, one in Cretingham, one in Letheringham and Kettleburgh , and one in Dennington – all of which are adjacent to Framlingham.

The first James Butcher by wife Mary had one child bap. in Cretingham (IGI):

i.              James, bp. 17 Feb. 1693 Cretingham, probably the James Butcher who married in Kettleburgh on 28 Apr. 1723 Mary Smyth.  He may be the James Butcher bur. Framlingham 13 Mar. 1783 (NBI2).  James Butcher, hatter, made a will in Framlingham on 27 Feb. 1782, pr. 17 Sep. 1790 (Archd. Suffolk, 1783:34) naming as heirs his son William Butcher and daughter Sarah Dallinger.  Daniel Bull of Framlingham was executor.  James and Mary had:

i.              Sarah, d. James and Mary, bp. 9 Aug. 1724 Framlingham (Bishops Transcripts, not found on SFHS transcript)

ii.             Mary, bp. 5 July 1725 Framlingham.  Mar. there 3 Mar. 1746/7 John Dallinger.  Sarah, wife of John Dallinger, was bur. Framlingham 6 Jan. 1797.

iii.            James, bp. 8 Sep. 1726

iv.            William, bp. 25 Jan. 1727/8, living in 1782.  He may be the William Butcher, bachelor, bur. Framlingham 13 Apr. 1796.

v.             Daniel, bp. 27 Jan. 1729/30, bur. 20 May 1730 Framlingham

vi.            Daniel, bp. 17 Oct. 1733, bur. 26 May 1734 Framlingham

The second James Butcher married in Letheringham in 1706 (IGI) Ann Sewell, and was in Kettleburgh by 1707.  A James Butcher was bur. in Kettleburgh 24 Feb. 1720/1 and widow Ann Butcher was bur. there 17 Jan. 1750.  James and Ann had:

                i.              Robert, bp. 4 July 1707 Kettleburgh

ii.             Ann, bp. 26 Feb. 1710 Letheringham.  One Ann Butcher mar. in Kettleburgh 19 Apr. 1730 (Bps. Trs.) Alexander Cooke; another mar. there in 1730 John Blaxhall, and another mar. in Cretingham 8 Oct. 1730 Tho. Baker.

iii.            Mary, bp. 8 Oct. 1713 Kettleburgh

iv.            James, bp. 12 Aug. 1716 Kettleburgh

Another James Butcher of similar age, yeoman, lived in Dennington, also adjacent to Framlingham.  He seems to have had a first wife named Mercy who was bur. in Dennington on 31 Oct. 1713 (NBI2).  She apparently had no children by James and left a will in Dennington dated 5 Mar. 1710 as wife of James Butcher, yeoman..  The will was proven at Woodbridge 14 Aug. 1719.  The will names no Butcher children, but leaves bequests to her son John Smith, daughter Hannah wife of William Gouch, and various grandchildren.  James Butcher of Dennington, widower, married in Dennington on 7 June 1715 Susan Gardiner   He was buried in Dennington on 5 Feb. 1726.  Widow Susan Butcher then married on 16 Jan. 1734 Robert Girling.  James and Susan had the following children:

i.                     Mary, bp. 17 Jan. 1716 Dennington.  May be the Mary Butcher, single, who mar. in Framlingham 2 Feb. 1738/9 John Doughty.  They apparently had a child shortly before, as John Doughty, son of Mary Butcher, was bp. in Halesworth, 17 Dec. 1738.

ii.                    Susan, bp. 16 Dec. 1717

iii.                  James, bp. 4 Apr. 1721 in an unidentified parish according to Bishop’s Transcripts (LDS film 952978); bur. 9 Apr. 1721 Dennington

iv.                  James, bp. 9 Oct. 1721 Dennington.  James Butcher and Sarah Button were married in Framlingham 29 Sep. 1748.

v.                   John, bp. 7 May 1722 (see below)

vi.                  Hannah, bp. 15 Aug. 1725.  May have had several illegitimate children in Badingham:

i.         Susan, d. of Hannah Butcher and Robt. Parker “the reputed father”, bp. 19 Sep. 1756 Badingham

ii.        Mary, base born dau. of Hannah Butcher, bur. 17 Jan. 1764 Badingham

John, son of James Butcher of Dennington, may be the John Butcher who married in Badingham  (adjacent to Dennington) on 30 Nov. 1748 Mary Dowsing (by banns).  Widow Mary Butcher, aged 82, was buried in Badingham 31 Oct. 1797.  They had (IGI):

i.                     John, bp. 1 Oct. 1752 Badingham

ii.                    Mary, bp. 8 Sep. 1755, bur. 5 Sep. 1757

iii.                  Susan, bp. 1 Oct. 1758, probably the Susan Butcher, age 38, single, buried in Badingham on 13 Dec. 1800.

iv.                  Sarah, dau. of John and Mary Butcher “of Beddingham”, bp. Peasenhall 29 Mar. 1761.

John Butcher of Framlingham, likely the one bp. in Framlingham 16 Oct. 1672, son of Robert, had a wife Elizabeth and perhaps mar. in Yaxley, Suff. on 2 June 1696 (acc. to IGI, is the date correct?) Elizabeth Norman.  Framlingham bp. of his children refer to him as “ironmonger.”  John and Elizabeth Butcher had the following children in Framlingham:

i.                     John, b. 21 Sep., bp. 26 Sep. 1695 Framlingham

ii.                    Elizabeth, bp. 28 Jan. 1696/7 Framlingham

iii.                  Anne, bp. 28 Apr. 1698, perhaps the same as Susanna, dau. of John and Elizabeth, bur. 10 June 1700.

iv.                  Mary, bp. 31 May 1699, bur. 30 July 1699.

Beyond this point the records are confusing, as there were at least three contemporaneous John Butchers with wives named Elizabeth.  Besides John of Framlingham and John of Ubbeston (above), there was also a John Butcher who married in Great Wenham (southwest of Ipswich) on 23 Mar. 1695 Elizabeth Kempster and had children there 1695-1703.  In addition, John Butcher of Framlingham, widower and Eliz. Ashkettle of Parham, widow, were mar. by license in Framlingham 18 July 1721.  This couple had a daughter Anna bp. Parham 27 Sep. 1730.

A John and Elizabeth Butcher had children in Metfield 1702-1708.  Based on dates, this could be the same as the John Butcher last found in Framlingham in 1699.  However, the names of the children seem more to reflect the Wilby branch of the family:

v.                   Mary, bp. 28 May 1702 Metfield (IGI)

vi.                  Anna, bp. 4 July 1704

vii.                Hugh, bp. 4 June 1705

viii.               Finett, bp. 17 May 1708.

In the Mendlesham Parish Records there is a settlement certificate  for John Butcher, Elizabeth his wife, and their four children from Metfield, 27 Mar. 1721 (SRO FB 159/G3/21).

William Butcher of Worlingworth, probably born about 1700, mar. there 15 Oct. 1727 Rose Cordel.  Rose was bur. 20 Dec. 1728 (although the transcript calls her wife of Jno. Butcher).  William was buried there 8 Dec. 1733.  They seem to have had one child:

i.                     William, bur. Worlingworth 24 Feb. 1735

Lewis Butcher of Stradbroke and Norwich

An early Lewis Butcher, of uncertain relationship to those shown above and likely born around 1520, appears to have been in Stradbroke between 1547 and 1562, and left land there and in Peasenhall, Suffolk at his death.  He made a will in Norwich (parish not stated) on 18 June 1596, probated 21 Sep. 1596, leaving most of his property to his wife Elizabeth and youngest children Clement and Margery (probably children of a second marriage)  (abstract) .  Issue:

i.                     ? Christina, bp. Stradbroke 29 Nov. 1547 (parents not shown), bur. 16 Feb. 1552

ii.                    John, eldest surviving son, apparently the John Bocher bp. Stradbroke 20 Aug. 1552 (parents not shown on transcript of register, but IGI says his father is Robert, apparently incorrectly).  Living in 1596; left a cash bequest in his father’s will.  Perhaps lived in Norwich.

iii.                  ? perhaps Lewis, bp. Stradbroke 16 Jan. 1553/4 (parents not shown); not mentioned in his father’s will.

iv.                  Christian, mar. Edmond Jarmyn, living in 1596 with children Wolfram, John, and several daughters

v.                   Agnes, bp. Stradbroke 15 July 1559 (daughter of Lewis Bocher).  Married in Parham, Suff. 23 July 1590 Jeffrey Jordan, living in 1596 with issue a daughter Elizabeth

vi.                  Elizabeth, bp. Stradbroke 26 Mar. 1562.  Married John Rowe (?), living in 1596 with children.

vii.                Joane, unm. in 1596

viii.               Clement, born after 1576 (and before 1596), inherited his father’s lands in Stradbroke and Peasenhall, Suffolk.  There was a Clement Butcher who mar. in Little Snoring, Norf. 29 Nov. 1613 Alice Allen, daughter of John Allen of Pensthorpe, by license (image 73 on familysearch).  It is possible that he was the father of a Clement Butcher who married Anne Banocks or Banks and left a will in Barbados proven 3 Mar. 1658/9 as Clement Boucher, Gent. (RB6/13, p. 278; see English Settlers in the Barbados).  This mentions brother Danyell Banocks and his sons, wife Ann Boucher, and son Robert Boucher (minor).  Executors were “sis Clavins’s son & her eld dau living in Norwich, Co. Norfolk; uncle Thomas Allin.”

ix.                  Margery, born after 1576

Bedfield, Suffolk

The following early baptisms in Bedfield are likely related to the Laxfield family:

Mary, d. George Butcher and Margaret, bp. 17 Jan. 1590/1

Thomas Butcher, bp. 12 Jan. 1592/3 (parents not stated)

Elizabeth Butcher, bp. 12 Apr. 1596 (parents not stated)

Cratfield (next to Fressingfield and Laxfield)

Gulielmus (William) Butcher mar. [name not shown] in Cratfield on 18 June 1559.  He may be the same as “William Bocher John Bocher’s son” referred to as a godchild in the will of Hugh Bocher of Laxfield, 1542 (see above), which would suggest he was a son of John Butcher of Wingfield.  He does not seem to be the William Butcher who died in Stradbroke in 1575.  Instead, this William Butcher was apparently buried in Cratfield 1 Feb. 1571/2.  His widow would then seem to be the widow [unnamed] Butcher who married Robertus Hersum, 2 Nov. 1572 Cratfield.  Baptisms of his children are not found in Cratfield (and may have occurred in neighboring Laxfield, where the register begins in 1575), but appear likely to have included the following families:

Richardus Butcher mar. Margarita Dawes, 28 May 1582.  Transcripts of the Cratfield PR show a Rich. Batcher bur. 6 June 1626, and a widow Butcher bur. 18 June 1634.  Richard and Margaret had:

i.                     Margarita, bp. 12 Aug. 1582 Cratfield.  Perhaps the Margaret Butcher who married in Cratfield 31 May 1602 Robert Cox.

ii.                    Elizabetha, bp. 20 July 1589

iii.                  Johanes, bp. 11 Feb. 1592

iv.                  Richardus, bp. 8 June 1595.  He might be the Richard who mar. in Metfield 9 Sep. 1618 Elizabeth Jordanne.

Thomas Butcher and Mary Fisk, mar. 9 Sep. 1584

Hugo Butcher and Elizabeth Sterrer mar. 17 Sep. 1596

Mary Butcher and John Smith, mar. 24 Oct. 1614 Cratfield.

South Elmham St. Michael

Robert Butcher was perhaps born around 1570/5.  One possibility is that he was the Robert Boocher son of John and Elizabeth Boocher bp. Denton, Norf. 21 Feb. 1573/4.  Robert Bucher and ffraynces Wellis were mar. in St. Elmham St. Michael 22 May 1603.  He was buried in South Elmham St. Michael, Suff. in May 1642, and his wife Frances was buried there in Nov. 1646.  They had

i.                     Robert, bp. 2 Sep. 1604 South Elmham St. Michael

ii.                    William, bp. 17 Mar. 1609, bur. 21 Apr. 1611

iii.                  Margaret, bp. 1 Mar. 1611

iv.                  Sarah, bp. 11 May 1615

v.                   Rebecca, bp. 8 June 1618

Covehithe

Covehithe (also known as Northalles) is located several miles to the east of Hoxne District, along the coast of the German Ocean, in Blything District.  Another early Butcher family is found there.  While a connection has not yet been established to any of the Butchers in and around Hoxne District, some notes on this group are provided for reference.

Alice Bocher, widow, of Northalys made a will on the last day of June 1523 (Archdeacon of Suffolk R8/318).  She does not appear to have had Butcher children, but did leave a small bequest to Clement Bocher, while appointing John Botcher, clerk, as executor.  The will also provides an annuity for her father and mother (not named), and leaves bequests to Robert Torfood the younger, Edward Bryer, and Symond Smyth, among others.

Robert Bocher of Covehithe, probably born about 1490/1500 left a will in 1544 in the Norwich Consistory Court (abstract) .  He might derive from Laxfield (see above).  The will mentions wife Mary, an unmarried son Thomas (of age) and two unmarried daughters (not named).

Thomas Butcher, likely son of the previous, is probably the Thomas Butcher who left a will in Northales (“alias Covehyth”) dated 24 Feb. 1581/2 and proven Mar. 1582 (Archdeacon of Suffolk, R20/1).  His widow Margery was apparently a second wife (widow Condall).  Margery Butcher left a will in Northales on 10 Aug. 1586, probated 22 Aug. 1586 (Archdeacon of Suffolk, R31/72).  This leaves most of her estate to her sister Margaret, but does leave to Mary Butcher the post bed “that was her father Thomas Butcher’s.”  Thomas had a freehold estate in Northales called ffylsons, as well as copyhold land.  Thomas’ will names two children, apparently by an unknown first wife:

i.                     John, co-executor, received his father’s lands (see below).

ii.                    Mary, apparently unmarried in 1586.

John Butcher, son of the previous, was likely born around 1550/55.  Covehithe baptisms, beginning in 1574, are abstracted to the IGI, and show the following children of John and Marie Butcher:

i.                     Jone, bp. 27 Jan, 1582

ii.                    Anne, bp. 16 Feb. 1583

Mary Butcher of Henstead (near Covehithe), single woman, made a will on 30 July 1617 (Archdeacon of Suffolk IC/AA1/53/223).  She left much of her estate to her sister, Susan Butcher, with other bequests to the children of Mary Davye of Benacre and three Miss Yonges(?), daughters of Mary Uford (?).

Benhall, Sweffling, Great Glemham, and Rendham

These adjacent parishes are a few towns southeast of Wilby and Laxfield, located between Framlingham and Saxmundham, Suffolk.  The IGI extracts bp. and marriages for Sweffling (start 1570; transcript also examined), and bp. for Rendham (start 1554), but not Great Glemham or Benhall.  Earlier burials are not in NBI2.

Thomas Butcher, yeoman, of Benhall, was likely born around 1620, and may be a descendant of the Laxfield family.  He made a will in Benhall on 18 July 1679, probated 8 August (abstract) , appointing his son Thomas executor and also naming wife Sarah, daughter Alice, and minor children Isaac and Rebecca.  The estate of widow Sarah Butcher was administered in the court of the Archdeacon of Suffolk in 1682 (A6/29/47).  Only their youngest child was baptized in Benhall.  Thomas’ children, who are found in adjacent parishes, were:

i.                     Thomas, probably born about 1650/55, was executor to his father’s will in 1679.  Unmarried and a yeoman, he made a will in Sweffling on 21 April 1731, proven 1 July 1735 (Norwich Consistory Court), appointing Samuel Thompson of Kettleburgh and John Newson of Stratford executors.  Buried Sweffling 19 April 1735.  He left his property to his siblings and their children.

ii.                    Isaac, probably born about 1665/75, as his father’s will (1679) leaves funds for his “bringing up”.  He was of Great Glemham when his brother Thomas made his will in 1731. Isaac married in Rendham on Feb. 12, 1699 Penelope Baldry.  Isaac Butcher, occupation linen weaver, made a will in Sweffling on 2 Jan. 1759, proven 25 Mar. 1760 (Archdeacon of Suffolk, 18:628).  Son Francis and son-in-law John Tyes were nominated executors.  Witnesses were Benj. Baldry, Willm. Studd, and Phil. Brenner.  Issue (perhaps bp. in Great Glemham?):

                                                               i.      Francis.  Probably moved away just before his father’s death, as the record of probate says that Francis Butcher’s share was reserved to him “when he shall apply for ye same”.  There was a Francis Butcher bur. Butley, Suff. 11 June 1767.

ii.      John.  Boyd’s marriage index (but not the abstracts in the IGI) shows a Jno. Butcher mar. Mary Spencer in Reydon, Suff. in 1732.  They seem to have had children in nearby Westhall

i.                     Sarah, bp. 6 Jan. 1733 Westhall (IGI)

ii.                    Mary, bp. 19 Mar. 1734 (IGI)

iii.      Thomas.  Seems to have lived in Sweffling, where he had a son by wife Elizabeth in 1729.  Thomas Butcher, single, and Elisabeth Jay, widow, both of Sweffling, married in Cransford, Suff. on 4 Nov. 1728.  Married second in Benhall on 11 Jan. 1736/7 Elizabeth Stopher.  He was living when his father made his will in 1759, and so is not the Thomas Butcher bur. in Sweffling 16 Sep. 1738.  His wife may be the Elizabeth Butcher bur. there 31 Aug. 1741 Issue of Thomas and Elizabeth Butcher:

i.                     Thomas, bp. 7 Sep. 1729 Sweffling.

ii.                    Thomas, bp. 1 June 1738 Sweffling.  Perhaps the Thomas Butcher, labourer, bur. Sweffling 18 May 1770.  He had a wife Ann.  Widow Ann Butcher mar. 18 Nov. 1770 Thomas Fiske (? or Tucke?).  Thomas and Ann had one child in Sweffling:

                                                                                                                                       i.      Thomas, bp. 3 Jan. 1768 Sweffling

iv.      Amy, mar. _______ Clark and died before 1759 leaving two children

                                                             v.      Rebecca, mar. Sweffling 25 Dec. 1756 John Tyes.  She received the bulk of her father’s estate..

iii.                  Alice, married to John Barton, with the following children in 1731:

                                                               i.      Elizabeth

                                                              ii.      Henry

                                                            iii.      Mary

iv.                  Rebecca, bp. Benhall 17 Nov. 1674, mar. Francis Moulton in Kettleburgh, Suff. 1699 (transcript does not give day)

An Edward Butcher, born ca. 1733/4, was buried in Sternfield, Suff. (next to Benhall and Saxmundham) on 7 Jan. 1807, aged 74 (NBI2).  By wife Elizabeth he had two children bp. in Saxmundham:

                i.              Elizabeth, bp. 25 Nov. 1766

ii.             Mary, bp. __ Dec. 1768

Aldeburgh, Suffolk and Surrounds

Aldeburgh is on the coast, east of Great Glemham.  Parish registers are extant from 1558, and have been checked via the FFHS online database.

James Butcher mar. Aldeburgh 10 Sep. 1559 Elizabeth Cowell, widow.

William Butcher:  One Wiliam Butcher mar. in Aldeburgh 19 Feb. 1558/9 widow Margerie Thompson.  There was a Margerie Butcher bur. 3 May 1587 (NBI2).  William Butcher, widower, mar. 1 Jan. 1587/8 Eme Rooke, single – perhaps not the same man.  He may be the William Butcher whose estate was administered in Aldeburgh in 1617 (Arch. Suff., A6/9/13).  Two children are shown for William and Eme Butcher:

                i.              William, bp. 13 Sep. 1590 Aldeburgh

ii.             John, bp. 13 Jan. 1593/4

Another William Butcher was bur. 15 Mar. 1583 (NBI2).  His wife seems to be the widow Frances Butcher who mar. 21 Dec. 1585 Robert Elmes.  William and Frances had:

                i.              George, bp. 26 Jan. 1577/8 Aldeburgh

ii.             Anne, bp. 21 Feb. 1579/80

iii.            Alice, bp. 25 Apr. 1582, probably the Alice Butcher bur. 17 Aug. 1582.

iv.            Henry, bp. 29 Dec. 1583

Richard Butcher, “late of Aldborowe”, inventory of estate taken 30 Apr. 1590 by Alexander Bentz, Richard Starke (?), James Bond, and Robert Marley (?) (Archd. Suff., In. 2/105).  Although he left a not inconsequential estate, including rent due, I have not found any other mention of his estate.  The inventory provides no clues to relationships.

John Butcher of Aldburgh, ANF original will 1622 (no. 17 – not examined)

Martha, d. Henry & Elizabeth Butcher, bp. 12 Jun 1741 Aldeburgh

John Butcher, of age to be a grandfather, made a will in Friston (just east of Aldeburgh) on 14 Dec. 1728, pr. 23 Jan. 1728/9 (Archdeacon of Suffolk IC/AA1/157/16; (abstract) ).  The will mentions properties in Friston, Farnham, and Blaxhall, and he was likely related to other Butchers in Blaxhall.  Although the will was made in Friston, John was apparently buried in nearby Tunstall on 22 Dec. 1728.  He left a widow (given name not stated in the will), who might be the Deborah Butcher who was bur. Tunstall 22 May 1751, aged 85.  The will appoints his daughter Ann Amerson and cousin William Row executors; Thomas Chandler and Thos. Clayton were witnesses.  Children:

i.              John, living in 1728 with a daughter Elizabeth – probably a widower as the will of John Sr. expresses doubts about his having any other children.  His father left him property for life.  Child:

i.              Elizabeth, left land in Farnham by her grandfather.  Appears to be the Elizabeth Butcher of Friston who mar. in Aldeburgh 16 Apr. 1740 Samuel Munnings of Chelmondiston.

ii.             Elizabeth, living in 1728, surname “Simonts”, with children Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary

iii.            daughter, apparently died before 1728 leaving children Timothy and Ann “Sawer”.

iv.            Ann, executrix of her father’s will, surname “Amerson” with son James.

A William Butcher, not identified, was bur. Tunstall 12 Aug. 1737 (NBI2).

Margaret Butcher of Aldringham (adjacent to Aldeburgh and Friston) mar. Aldeburgh 6 Sep. 1737 George Bowles of Leiston

[1] Bishops Transcripts appear to show Elizabeth dau. of John Butshor and Elizabeth, bp. 11 Dec. 1698 Monk Soham – possibly indicating that the John and Elizabeth Butcher in that parish had been there much earlier.
