bullet David Amos Bias(1) was born on 15 Nov 1866 in Milton, Cabell Co., WV. He died on 25 Aug 1927 in Huntington, Cabell Co., WV. DAVID BIAS DIES IN FREAK BLAST
Gasoline Lamp Explodes in His Hand at Filling Station in Proctorville
David Bias, 60 years old, manager of the Elbert Bias gasoline station at the entrance to the Lawrence County fair grounds in Proctorville, was fatally injured at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in an explosion of a compressed air gasoline lamp, which he was helping to fill with air. He died while enroute to a Huntington hospital.
Some defect in the air tank of the lamp caused the explosion it is believed. The lamp had been brought to the gas station by E. S. Johnson, a vendor at the fair. Johnson was filling the tank with air and Mr. Bias was holding it so that he might shut off the gauge when 60 lbs. of air had been forced into the tank. Either the gauge didn't register, of the pressure was too large, it is said.
Johnson Not Hurt
Although Mr. Johnson was knocked several feet by the explosion, he was not injured.
The work of filling one of the tanks was not new to Mr. Bias, as he had assisted Mr. Johnson and others several times before. Miss Elsie Bias and Mr. Johnson were the only witnesses to the accident.
The top part of the tank was blown into Mr. Bias face, severely lacerating the throat. He was immediately placed in an automobile and rushed to a hospital here, but was found to be dead upon arrival. He never regained consciousness.
Mr. Bias lived with his nephew, the owner of the station, who resides in Proctorville. He had been managing the business for him for the past two months. Previous to that time he had resided with a daughter in Huntington, Mrs. Alex Bias.
The body was taken to the Johnston Undertaking establishment.
Native of Milton
Funeral services will probably be held Sunday at the Seventh Avenue Methodist Episcopal church here. Other arrangements are being held up pending arrival of the widow from Lakeland, Florida. She has been visiting there since Monday.
Mr. Bias was born at Milton, Nov. 15, 1866, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bias. His mother is still living.
In addition, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fred E. Wright, 916 Twenty-first street, Huntington, and Mrs. Alex Bias, 1724 Eleventh avenue; two sisters Mrs. Roscoe Newman and Mrs. T. Smith; five brothers, John, C. R., William, Haze, and Jim Bias.
