Legacy Report

Descendants of Roger E. Carroll

First Generation

1. Roger E. CARROLL , son of Edward CARROLL and Julia CONDON, was born on November 12, 1849 in Ireland 1 died on August 24, 1917 in Syracuse, NY, at age 67 2 3, and was buried on August 27, 1917 in St. Agnes' Cemetery, Dewitt, N.Y. 3.

General Notes: According to Roger E. Carroll's death certificate, issued August 27, 1917. Dr. D. G. Chadbourne, M.D. noted the cause of death as "Fracture of hip, Fall on floor in home" with old age a contributing factor. His address is listed as 916 Willis Ave. (Syracuse, NY), Ward 9. He had resided at his place of death for 35 years, was retired, and had lived in the State of New York for 60 years. The information in the certificate was provided by Roger Carroll of Syracuse, NY.

His date of birth is given as November 12, the year not provided. Age at death is provided as 67 years, 9 months, 12 days, which would put his year of birth at 1849, which conflicts with the birth date estimated from the 1880 Onondaga County, Geddes Village census information. His census entry listed that he was born in Ireland, but the death record of his daughter, Mary Agnes, indicates he was born in Syracuse (information on her record provided by Edward Capels).

If it's accurate that he had been in the state for 60 years, then he might have been 7 or 8 years old when his family emigrated to the U.S.

Obituary for Roger E. CARROLL, died August 24, 1917 Roger E. Carroll, a resident of the West End for many years, died Friday at his home, No. 916 Willis avenue. He had been ill some time. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Catherine Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Loren Caples and Josephine Carroll, and four sons, John of Taunton, Mass.; Michael of West Monroe, Roger and Daniel Carroll. The funeral will be held from the home at 9:45 o'clock this morning and half an hour later in St. Patrick's Church. Burial will be in St. Agnes's Cemetery. [Source: Syracuse Post Standard, Monday, August 27, 1917]

The survivors' names in his obituary do not completely connect with names listed in the following 1880 Geddes Village census index information:
Rhoger, 44
Catharine, 41
Edward, 20
Rhoger, 17
Mary, 15
Thomas, 11
Johanna, 9
Daniel, 6

Possible explanation is that this census information is for a different Roger Carroll family; another explanation is that, like most people in the Capels line, it seems, folks went by names other than their given names.

Roger married Catherine RYAN, daughter of John RYAN and Mary EGAN. Catherine was born on July 12, 1840 in Thurles, Ireland, County Tipperary 1 4, died on June 3, 1923 in Syracuse, NY, at age 82, and was buried on June 6, 1923 in St. Agnes' Cemetery, Dewitt, N.Y.

General Notes: Obituary for Catherine Carroll, died June 3, 1923: Mrs. Catherine Carroll, 85, No. 1008 Avery avenue, one of the oldest residents of the west end, died yesterday at her home. She was the widow of Roger C. Carroll and lived in this city nearly all her life. Surviving are three sons, John Carroll of Taunton, Mass.; Roger and Daniel Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Loren Chaples [sic] and Miss Johanna Carroll; a sister, Mrs. Patrick Carroll; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, all of this city. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning at the home and a half hour later in St. Patrick's church. Burial will be in St. Agnes' cemetery. [Source: Syracuse, NY Post Standard, June 4, 1923]

Dr. D. F. Mathews of Solvay, N.Y. noted on Catherine Carroll's death certificate that the cause of death was "Senile debility" with Aento Indegestion a contributing factor. There was no autopsy. Her address is listed as 1008 Avery Ave. (Syracuse), Ward 9. The document indicates she was retired, and a resident of the city and the U.S. for 60 years. If it's accurate that she had been in the country and city for 60 years, then she would have been about 22 years old (1862) when she emigrated to the U.S. The information in the certificate was provided by her son, Roger Carroll.

General Notes: Mary Agnes Capels, known as Mamie, is remembered as a strong, hardworking woman. Kate (Capels) Spies remembers that, as children, she and her brother, Jim, were required to stay in the sitting room at 1010 Avery Avenue while her mother, Elizabeth (Findlay), visited with Mamie. The first time she ever saw the living room of the house was at her grandmother Mamie's funeral, where she was laid out. Kate also remembered that Mamie kept a big garden in the backyard where much of the family's food was grown, including chickens. There was a summer kitchen at the rear of the house where she did her canning. Unusual for houses at that time, it had two bathrooms. Mary Capels gave birth to twelve children in the house at 1010 Avery Avenue. Janie (Capels) Tremont remembers that Mary's midwife, Mrs. O'Brien, lived across the street at 1011 Avery Ave.

Obituary for Mary Agnes (Carroll) Capels, died January 10, 1935 Mary A. Capels died Thursday at home, 1010 Avery Avenue. Surviving are 8 sons; 2 daughters, a brother Daniel and sister Johanna Carroll. Services will take place at the home 9:00 Monday morning and in St. Brigid's Church at 9:30 o'clock. [Source: Syracuse Post Standard, January 12, 1935]

According to Mary A. Capels' death certificate, issued January 12, 1935, from the Onondaga County Dept. of Health, the cause of death was a Cerebral Hemorrhage, with Diabetes Mellitis a contributing factor. The cerebral hemorrhage, which may have been equivalent to a stroke, occurred 10 days before her death, and she suffered from diabetes for 9 years. She died at home. Her trade is listed as Housework. Information in the certificate was provided by Edward Capels.

Kate Spies recalled (January 13, 2002 phone conversation) that the Undertaker Carroll was either a cousin or a brother of her grandmother. She also recalled that there were Carrolls in West Monroe, NY who were some relation to her grandmother. They raised turkeys. Though she would pass through West Monroe to get to Constantia, where she worked one summer doing housework at Rosewood, a camp owned by the owners of Harney's Men's Shop, Kate never knew or met any Carroll relations there.

Mary married Loren John CAPELS, son of Lester CAPELS and Eliza\Elizabeth Ann DOLEY, in 1882. Loren was born on March 11, 1862 in Mallory, New York, died on January 21, 1929 in Syracuse, NY, at age 66 2, and was buried on January 24, 1929 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt, NY, Lot 77, Section 2, Grave 3 6.

General Notes: 1870 NY census lists 9-year old Loren as LORENZO. Also listed in the household at that time is 30-year old Lorenzo (relationship not yet known). The 1880 census lists 19-year old Loren as a "Cooper", along with 17-year old brother George. At that time, the family was living at #6 Exchange Street. The 1900 census lists 38-year old Loren still a cooper, as well as his 17-year old son Edward, and as owner of the home at 1010 Avery Avenue (with mortgage). According to his death certificate, he was born in Mallory, NY, and lived in Syracuse for 50 years, which suggests he moved into the city some time around 1879. Of his parents, the death certificate lists only Lester Capels as his father; his mother's name and parents' birthplaces are listed as "Can't be learned." He is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery, Dewitt, NY, Lot 2.

The cause of his death was cancer. Though he died when she was very young, Kate Spies remembers that the cancer was in his jaw and his face was heavily bandaged.

Obituaries for Loren CAPELS, died January 21, 1929 Loren Capels, died last night at his home, 1010 Avery Avenue. He has been a resident of the West End for 50 years. Janie Tremont remembered that he spent a great deal of effort and money trying to locate his brother Lester, who had abandoned his wife and seven children around 1930. He even went so far to hire a private detective. Edward remained a bachelor. He was remembered as a "big" and generous man. Kate Spies recalled [May 4, 2002] that he was so fat, he got a new car every year because he would blow out the springs in the front seat. He would take her and her brother Jimmy for a ride each time he got a new car.

According to his death certificate, he died of pulmonary edema.

14. Lester Henry CAPELS (Mary Agnes CARROLL4, Roger E.1) was born on December 2, 1887 in Syracuse, NY and died about 1979 in Declared Dead; Whereabouts Remained Unknown After 1928, about age 92.

General Notes: Soldier, 97th Battalion C. E. F., Exhibition Park, Toronto. Why he was a soldier in in the Canadian Army and his military history there is not currently known. He abandoned his family in 1928 when Tommy was an infant. It is reported that he liked to hop trains. Like his father and brother, Lester was also a barrel maker, a trade he is believed to have plied throughout the country, ultimately, perhaps, landing him in Florida. Though he was suspected of still being alive after WWII, he was declared dead in 1979 after his son, Eddie's, death.

According to Kate Spies (May 4, 2002), Lester traveled to Gasport, NY (near Buffalo) in 1916 with his new wife, Elizabeth, to follow the fruit belt making barrels. It was there their first son, Edward, was born. This shed new light on the presumption that his barrel-making was predominantly linked to the Syracuse area salt industry. He was reputed to be one of the best barrel makers in New York State. He was also reputed to be a drunk, but one who never struck his wife. According to Kate, Lester's abandonment of his family broke his mother's heart.

CHILD KILLED AS HE DARTS INTO TRAFFIC, Boy, 4, Victim of Hiawatha Boulevard Mishap--- Thomas CAPELS, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester H. Capels of 1219 Carbon street, was injured fatally late yesterday afternoon when struck by an automobile as he ran into Hiawatha boulevard east at Carbon street during the heaviest traffic period of the day. The child was placed in a car and rushed to St. Joseph hospital where he died half an hour later. Dr. J. Howard Ferguson, who assisted in the investigation by James Bennett, coroner's assistant, conducted an autopsy and reported a crushed chest and fractured neck as the causes of the boy's death. Norbert Frey of 331 Wayland road, Lynnwood, driver of the car, picked the child from the pavement, took him to the hospital and reported the accident at police headquarters. In his story of the case Frey said he left his home in Lynnwood at 5 o'clock to drive to the plant of the Muench-Kreuze Candle Co., Inc., 617 Hiawatha boulevard east, where he is employed as a night watchman. He planned to arrive a little earlier than usual he said. As he approached the intersection of the boulevard and Carbon street, the boy stepped off the curb and darted into the street. He ran between two eastbound machines and into the path of the Frey car. The car struck him and threw him aside before the driver could swerve away. Frey said traffic on the boulevard, east and westbound, was heavier than usual late yesterday afternoon and his car was forced to travel at a moderate rate of speed. 26. Norman Alexander "Norm" CAPELS (Lester Henry CAPELS14, Mary Agnes CARROLL4, Roger E.1) was born on March 14, 1918 in Syracuse, NY and died on February 17, 2001 in Syracuse, NY, at age 82.

General Notes: Norman was a paratrooper in the U.S. 82nd 101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles" and fought in Normandy on D-Day. Not long after the war, he married Lydian Miller, began a family, and was as a truck driver and mover for Fleishmann's Furniture in Syracuse for many years. Lydian's tragic death in November, 1960 at age 36, left him a widower with five small children. He married Marion Walsh Ford, a widow with two children, on July 7, 1962.

Excerpts from "D-Day Dawned to Rain of Fire" in Syracuse Herald-American, Sunday, June 5, 1994:
"Between 1:30 and 2:30 a.m., the 16,000 paratroopers of the U.S. 82nd "All American" 101st "Screaming Eagles" and 6th British "Red Devils" airborne divisions seized landing zones on the eastern and western ends of the 60-mile beachhead. On board the SS Princess Maude, the men of the 299th Engineer Combat Battalion were fed breakfast. Norman Capels of DeWitt led a parachute squad of the 101st Airborne Division near the village of Angoville-au-Plain. Capels landed in a swamp near Route 13, the main road through Normandy. 'You could hear the shots hitting the plane, you could feel the shrapnel hit the plane, because we went in low. They jumped us at 300 and 400 feet, which was almost on the ground. ...It was so dark you couldn't see nothing. I landed in a swamp.' The men clicked brass children's toys that resembled crickets so they could identify one another at night. The Germans, Capels said, 'were shooting like hell. They were shooting from behind trees. They were all around fields. Couldn't see nothing, you were practically blind. Dark, night. Everybody shooting at you. It was pretty rough.'
"Much went wrong on Omaha: high seas swamped tanks; clouds obscured the bombers' targets; troops were cut to pieces by German fire. U.S. soldiers landed simultaneously on Utah. There, the troops suffered only 197 casualties battling a worn-out Nazi unit the surrendered when the Americans closed. At 7:10 a.m., U.S. Rangers scaled cliffs at Pointe du Hoc, swept past the resistance and into the woods. They destroyed five howitzers that could have bombarded the beaches. The British landed at Gold and Sword beaches at 7:25 a.m. The worst glitch occurred inland of Sword when the British 3rd Division failed to take Caen, a vital Normandy town, and nearby high ground. The Canadians hit Juno beach around 8:00 a.m. In an hour they had overcome the defenses. British and Canadian forces suffered 3,650 killed or wounded. By that time, about seven hours after they landed, Capels' paratroop unit was attacked in the hedgerows of Normandy. 'The Germans came a packing, a whole bunch of them,' he said. 'We had quite a bunch, too, by this time, and we just shot them to pieces. We had built up a skirmish line. They were attacking us. Then (the commander) was running up and down yelling 'Cease fire.' They were trying to surrender. They had to, they were getting slaughtered.' By the end of the day, the Allies controlled areas of all five landing beaches."
"Fifty years after the invasion, Capels reflected on the day that would become part of legend. 'It makes me feel good to think I had been there. But I wouldn't take a million bucks to do it again."
