My grandmother, Elizabeth Easton Findlay, was born in 1893 in Cumbernauld County, Dunbartonshire, Scotland among [at least, perhaps] eight children. At some point in her early 20s, she emigrated from Scotland to Halifax, Canada. It was in Canada she met and married my grandfather, Lester Henry Capels, who would later abandon her and their seven children in Syracuse, New York. What of the family she left behind in Scotland? "This Clan, one of the stronger branches of the Clan Chattan, derives from Farquhar, 4th Shaw of Rothiemurchus. A prominent name in its annals is that of Finlay Mor Scottish Standard Bearer, who fell at Pinkie in 1547. In the rising of 1715, the Farquharsons gathered over 140 men for the Clan Chattan Regiment, and it was Anne, daughter of Invercauld, and wife of Mackintosh, who contrived the "Rout of Moy", a strategem whereby a handful of men scattered the Redcoats and saved the Prince from danger. Besides the Chiefly House of Invercauld, the principal branches of the Farquharsons were those of the Monaltrie, Whitehouse and Finzean, all in Aberdeenshire." [Source: Ingles Buchan (Textiles) Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland; a tag attached to a Farquharson tartan scarf.] I have tried to be diligent in recording the sources of my information so that it can be judged by myself and others as to its reliability. Just because a record exists does not mean it was recorded accurately, whether by the scribe or the original provider. But such records are helpful in providing us with clues that could help verify our assumptions or point us in new directions. This document is only as complete and accurate as the information available up to this moment. No doubt it will continue to evolve over time, as it should. I hope you enjoy the Findlay story.
