IN THE
TOWNSHIP OF LAUSANNE,
1875
The village of Buck
Mountain had its inception in 1837 when Asa Lansford Foster built a cabin there
while exploring for coal deposits. A
rich vein of anthracite was discovered, and two years later Foster had
constructed a gravity railroad from the site to the village of Rockport. Wharves at Rockport allowed that coal to be
loaded onto canal boats for shipment to market. In November of 1840, Foster’s Buck Mt. Coal Co. shipped
its first load of coal to market. The
Buck Mt. Hotel began about 1810 and is still in existence. It was known as a meeting place of the Molly
McGuires during the 1860s and 1870s.
The village was mainly a company town owned by the coal company with few
other property owners shown.
