Bloomdale was probably founded in the late 1840s,
shortly after the Switchback Gravity Railroad constructed the return track to
Summit Hill. The Mt. Jefferson Plane was
located here, and the Tamaqua to Mauch Chunk road passed through intersecting with
a road from the Mahoning Valley to Summit Hill. In 1846 the White Bear Hotel was constructed at this intersection
and did business there for the following 154 years. It was torn down in 2000 so as to improve visibility at the (now)
busy and dangerous intersection. The
hotel’s presence was so strong that the name of Bloomingdale faded and the village
became better known as White Bear.
There are two stories concerning the name of Bloomingdale. One is that the name came from a family
named Bloom who owned land there, the other story says the name came from the
blooming fields of flowers on the area farms.
