East Penn Township
was one of the earliest settled portions of present day Carbon County. As early as the 1750s settlers began crossing
the Blue Mountain at the western end of the township (near the border with
Schuylkill Co.) and establishing homesteads and farms in the valley of the
Lizard Creek. The first settlers were
of English speaking people with names like Custer, Rhodes, Tippler, Kocher,
Washburn and others. Following the
Revolution most of the English left and families of Pennsylvania German
ancestry, following the same route from western Lehigh County, supplanted them. Today the township remains predominately
German.
The first church of what would be Carbon County was established in this township in 1797, the Ben Salem Lutheran & Reformed Church. Dinkey Memorial Church (also Lutheran & Reformed), built on land donated by Jacob Dinkey was established 1851. Both congregations are still meeting. The church-side cemeteries of these churches are among the counties oldest maintained cemeteries.
